Alternates for Barrow include Deadhorse (PASC), Bettels (PBET), and Kotz. All require lots and lots of fuel. However we would keep track of the current conditions at Wainwright (PAWI), 75 miles away and Nuiqsit (PAQT) 110 miles away, neither are legal alternates because of TAFs and GPS...
WANJO intersection. The IAF for the ILS to rwy 8 at Barrow, AK. It's not uncommon to have 4 or 5 airplanes stacked up while waiting for the rvr to come up to mins for the approach. 737, couple of navajos, BE-99, and CE-208, all driving around in circles.....
There is a pulsating VASI at SRR, Ruidodo, New Mexico. Every time I go in there I have to look at the AIM to figure out how to read the indicator......
USMCcech,
Can you publish the study you are refering to about Rotor EMS having the worst safety record outside of Alaska?
I'm a fixed wing EMS pilot who works for a company with both. I also spent several years flying the Alaskan bush.
Psysicx,
All but one or two of the rotor pilots at my...
Barrow is a one day trip, come in on the morning jet and leave on the evening jet. If you decide you MUST spend the night, stay at the airport inn. DO NOT stay at the Top of the World Hotel next to the bank.
I arrived in Barrow one January evening and finally escaped just under 3 years...
Pasc
You are correct, the gravel strip is now closed, but still lit. They turned the section directly across from the MCC into a helo pad, mostly because the medics are based in the MCC now and it makes transports easier.
Back to the origional subject, Re-routes are not uncommon.
You caught me there A Squared. AS used to use PUB on their bag tags for Prudhoe Bay. Checking their website, thay have started calling it SCC for Deadhorse, like the rest of the world. However, you are correct it would be a lousy ride in a -200 all the way to Pueblo. But there is always the...
Alaska Airlies does this all the time. When the PUB flight is canceled because of MX, the BRW plane will go ANC-FAI-PUB-BRW. No big deal, makes everyone a minimum of an hour late, but gets everyone moved. It's happened a couple of times in the last week or two.
I asked this because the TSA people in rural AK are almost all TDY. They collect both per diem and COLA. The government is putting them up in a hotel, with a kitchenette. One guy I met from Vegas even paid off his house with the COLA pay. This didn't make sense to me, because his per diem...
Last week I was droping a friend, who is a muni cop, off for a flight. He checked his gun case. When the TSA searched his other bag, they had a major problem with the ammo being in the magazines. He was told that it had to be in a container designed for carrying ammunition. I thought that was...
A Squared,
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Troy,
One operator who always seems to be hiring, and regularly hires people from the lower 48 is Cape Smythe Air Service. PO Box 549, Barrow, AK 99723. (907)852-8333. The DO is Dave Henley and CP is named Dave Shimmel (sp?)
MAR,
I knew the anniversary was comming up, but didn't realize it was upon us.
Nami and her father came back to town this last month and there was a salvage barge in the vaciniy of the crash site. But the currents are pretty strong in the Peard Bay area, also the underwater visibilty is...
Asquared,
I don't want to live here for the rest of my days, but there is a little more to Barrow than you mention here, and it really isn't as bad as you make it out to be. Though it can be pretty bleak here in the winter time (SEPT-MAY). But there are some decent restruants, a couple of...
I think Cape Smythe in Barrow is Hiring. The have a couple of C99's which are two pilot. Also, C-207's, Navajo's and T-1040's (unpressurized chayanne) (907)852-8333
