Because it's thier "f*cking" job to keep. Grow up, Alice!
Whiney, your report was from 1992, I think there has been a few advancements since then.

Yep- the advancement of the average American gut.

Their job they f^cking got when age 60 pilots retired before them -
You aren't special-You haven't accomplished one thing a 30-50yo pilot hasn't as well. + you had way less barriers to entry to a major than this generation has had bc your generation also saw fit to outsource half the domestic legacy flights- so please- spare us your outrage over 65- the profession will be better off when it's not in the boomer's greed oriented hands

Or do what some countries are already pushing to do: no age discrimination, fly as long as you can hold a first class medical.

This entire thread courtesy of some anomynous guy who says he had "some guy" on his jumpseat who said he was on some stealth mission that no one has heard of....... Give me a break....good night i'll sleep well after this chuckle.

Let's eliminate age discrimination, but to be fair let's also change the paradigm of airline seniority...with the advancements in communication, aircraft design and crew coordination, the role of airline captain as the primary decision maker has diminished. So has the justification for the two tier pay scale (FO vs CP). One pay scale based on longevity (per aircraft type) would make mergers painless and not financially impact 1/2 the seniority group...

Age discrimination starts in the Constitution. There is a minimum age to be President of the United States. (I think it is 33 or 35). There are mandatory retirement ages for cops and firemen. Do you want a 66 year old firman carrying you down a burning staircase?

Btw, Canada has recently passed a law letting pilots fly past 65, but they can only fly as a narrowbody FO, or widebody cruise officer.(SO) I hope it doesn't go that way, but if it does, at least it allows upgrades to continue as those guys get to do walk arounds again. But, that wouldn't help with new hiring.

Bye Bye---General Lee

Sorry but this is the dumbest thing I have heard in a while. Why don't we just have an airliner going through the air were all decisions are done by proxy. Someone has to be in charge. Someone has to make the final desicion. That person is the captain and that person will always make more. With your system why don't we let the nurses in the O.R. decide procedure. Or let the surgical resident make the final call. NO thanks.

Eagle,

I hate to break it too you but CPs authority to make decisions has been diminished by advancements in air carrier aircraft (increased automation) and communication (read dispatch). We no longer are flying multie-engine pistons alone and unafraid across the pacific...in fact FOs are command qualified in many instances of long haul flying...the two tier pay system unfairly hurts the FO (but the companies love getting 1/2 the pilots at a 30 percent discount)...

Circadian rythm disruption, High Altitude radiation, recirculated -dry-air, subject to never ending frequencies/vibration/noise, constantly changing water/bacteria supply, thousands of people and their diseases/infections locked up in a tube w/you every month, hotels and bedsheets and suspect cleaning, occasional, but REAL, Life and Death decisions, polyester uniforms, airplane coffee, skank F/A's that touch Pee-Pee ( If you're Lucky), Ex-Wive's, blowed-up engines, a "good" Hong Kong layover, municipal Police Departments, airport fast food, crew meals, vending machines, beer and tacos at 7 am, 48 hour Vegas layovers......The List goes ON and ON.
UAV technology will quickly overcome all these problems. The "shortage" will come at the most opportune time.

The first airline that can get approval for UAV Passenger service with a $55 LAX-JFK fare will become the new WN. But the kid flying it from his basement will still get to wear 4 stripes and a big watch.

Seconded. Thank you all for your mentorship over the years, but it's time to retire and let the rest of us have a shot at making a living. There have been enough barriers to career advancement over the past decade or so without exacerbating the stagnation problem even more.

Here's an honorable pilot who is retiring with dignity and respect for the next generation who are just trying to provide for their families. Glad there's at least one of you still out there. Enjoy retirement..
