Whiney, your report was from 1992, I think there has been a few advancements since then.
Yep- the advancement of the average American gut.

Probably what is best. Put a stop to descriminashun.Or do what some countries are already pushing to do: no age discrimination, fly as long as you can hold a first class medical.
Let's eliminate age discrimination, but to be fair let's also change the paradigm of airline seniority...with the advancements in communication, aircraft design and crew coordination, the role of airline captain as the primary decision maker has diminished. So has the justification for the two tier pay scale (FO vs CP). One pay scale based on longevity (per aircraft type) would make mergers painless and not financially impact 1/2 the seniority group...

UAV technology will quickly overcome all these problems. The "shortage" will come at the most opportune time.Circadian rythm disruption, High Altitude radiation, recirculated -dry-air, subject to never ending frequencies/vibration/noise, constantly changing water/bacteria supply, thousands of people and their diseases/infections locked up in a tube w/you every month, hotels and bedsheets and suspect cleaning, occasional, but REAL, Life and Death decisions, polyester uniforms, airplane coffee, skank F/A's that touch Pee-Pee ( If you're Lucky), Ex-Wive's, blowed-up engines, a "good" Hong Kong layover, municipal Police Departments, airport fast food, crew meals, vending machines, beer and tacos at 7 am, 48 hour Vegas layovers......The List goes ON and ON.
Their job they f^cking got when age 60 pilots retired before them -
You aren't special-You haven't accomplished one thing a 30-50yo pilot hasn't as well. + you had way less barriers to entry to a major than this generation has had bc your generation also saw fit to outsource half the domestic legacy flights- so please- spare us your outrage over 65- the profession will be better off when it's not in the boomer's greed oriented hands
Here's an honorable pilot who is retiring with dignity and respect for the next generation who are just trying to provide for their families. Glad there's at least one of you still out there. Enjoy retirement..Seconded. Thank you all for your mentorship over the years, but it's time to retire and let the rest of us have a shot at making a living. There have been enough barriers to career advancement over the past decade or so without exacerbating the stagnation problem even more.

Why don't we just have an airliner going through the air were all decisions are done by proxy. Someone has to be in charge.
Eagle,
I hate to break it too you but CPs authority to make decisions has been diminished by advancements in air carrier aircraft (increased automation) and communication (read dispatch). We no longer are flying multie-engine pistons alone and unafraid across the pacific...in fact FOs are command qualified in many instances of long haul flying...the two tier pay system unfairly hurts the FO (but the companies love getting 1/2 the pilots at a 30 percent discount)...
Which will fortunately accelerate the Geezer Meter. I just don't want CA 48" waist wedged behind the controls after his in flight heart attack.
You are a ******************************!
Your teeth must have fallen out as all we heard was **********************!

The age limit will be repealed.
Canada already has no age limit. Europe started an Age 70 committee about 5 years ago. They will also have no age limit, probably before the US does.

Isn't that an Airbus? LOL.
(Don't get offended, its just a chiste!)
Eagle,
you miss my point...I agree there has to be a PIC on every flight, but paying that individual 30 percent more than the guy his right (FO) seems unfair given that the differences in the two jobs has gotten less and less over the years with the advancement in technology...to eliminate the pain of mergers and stagnation, why no go to a single longevity pay scale??

Flying last week from PHX to the East coast with a US Airways jumpseater on the jump. Conversation turned to his reason for the trip to the coast. He explained to us that he was one of a group of "pro age 70 pllots" working under the radar to have the age 65 retirement age changed to 67 and then stepped to 70. He explained to me and my over 60 captain that they were attempting to keep this as clandestine as possible to keep opposition to a minimum. At this point I became irritated and asked what excuse they were using this time. He explained to us that the coming pilot shortage would be devastating to the airline industry and that in order to avoid this the retirement age would have to raised to 70 to keep all the experienced pilots in the left seat . He stated the progress was very good and that a change in the retirement age would come before the end of the year. FO at our company has a father working for the FAA and confirmed that strong consideration was indeed being given to changing the age. The gift that keeps on giving!!
O great another "guy in the jumpseat" story. Because those are always true.
