US Airways Final Recalls: Take it, or Leave it?

I like where you're going with this Swaayze. I think you might be on to something.
  1. I'll get up at 3:30am, get into an uncomfortable shirt and tie. Then i'll drive around for :30 minutes and park my car about a mile from my house.
  2. Then i'll hitch a ride on the garbage-truck back to my house (to simulate the employee bus).
  3. I'll remove my coat, shoes, and belt, and have my wife frisk me when I come through the door (maybe that part wont be so bad...)
  4. Then i'll go sit in the closet and barricade the door. Maybe i'll simulate an eastbound flight at dawn by shining a flashlight in my eyes.
  5. Every so often my wife could bring me stale coffee or bang on the door and yell she's too hot or cold.
  6. Then i'll give myself :30 minutes to switch closets while wolfing down a Big-Mac enroute.
  7. At the end of the day i'll sleep on a cot in the garage...
I'm feeling better already...

I am so glad to be back as an active pilot. As I said before, I accept that the industry has changed. It's still a good job with a lot of perqs.

My biggest fear right now are the amount of unhappy guys out there that are doing everything they can to disrupt operations.

If you think there is a geographical fence that is going to prevent a pilot's natural desire for bigger, faster, higher paying equipment you are going to be in for a big surprise.

Agreed. The only functional invisifence will be for E190 and G2 FO seats. That attrition will be captured by the furloughees. International FO to a moderate degree, and G2 or better Captain seats in large part, will likely go in a more natural seniority flow.
 
That being said... I think I might <gasp> have a touch of shiny-jet-syndrome. Think the doc can give me some penicillin or something for that?


Not a chance but it is a self-curable infliction. Problem is that it is HIGHLY contageous... especially to younger, fledgling pilots looking to conquer the world.

Oh sure Flylow. It's easy to avoid the siren song of SJS when you fly an airplane with an APU (ahhh...ground air conditioning), adjustable rudder pedals, flushable lav (just in case), and enough room in the cockpit to carry more than a small envelope of your belongings...

I can't expect YOU to understand... ;)

On the other hand it WAS nice to top all of the weather stretching from Minnesota to Texas the other day at FL470 in smooth air while listening to everyone else get the snot kicked out of them in the 30s and low 40s...

I'll take that bet. Most of the senior guys (Captains and FO's) at AWA are firmly ensconsed in the desert lifestyle. We've been flying red-eyes until our hair has fallen out or turned pre-maturely gray:puke: . Being senior means never having to look into the sun at 0730 am with a big yawn. Twenty to 25 minutes to SkyHarbor, do your trip and go home. PHX doesn't get as mucked up as PHL (yet).

I will admit that there will be a percentage of AWA pilots that will bid East, and I'm going to go with 7 to 8 percent (approximately 144 pilots). We have some Captains and FO's that live out there already. Some like myself that commute from the mid-west, are giving it some thought. DFW commuters.....I don't know, 2 hour flight with a 1-2 (that silly hold out regarding DST) hour time difference. PHX sounds better for that.

By the same token, I think you will see a like number of East (PSA?) pilots look to PHX for the shorter commute.

I think you will see most of the East pilots take the East upgrades for those reasons alone.
 
Again, maybe you guys could take this to one of the other 50 arbitration threads.

Please leave this one for those of us who are trying to decide whether to come back into that quagmire or to remain clear of US Airways and attempt to put our careers back on track via other venues.
 
I've got a little sticker shock looking at the price of homes in Southern New Hampshire. Could anyone suggest a town or neighborhood to look where homes are little more affordable?

You are correct sir! I am in the know. Yes, there is talk of more recalls. We are very short of crews. Numbers TBD.

There is a seniority list on the ALPA Web site but it does not show base or equipment. If you do have acess to the Web site, take a look at bid 07-04 and you can get a feel for what's going on.
 
Part of it's in writing: AGREED TO BINDING ARBITRATION. Your MEC and MC signed those papers in the begining, right?

hate to rain on the parade but all of us Westies have access. I´ve looked at the 7-04 bid but it doesn´t link names or seniority dates with equipment. I´m just curious how things are washing out with the recalls. We can also access your lines, pairings, etc.....It´s pretty easy for all you westies interested. I also found a seniority list on there that shows base and equipment but it seems way out of date....

Just log into the hub, click on flight crew information and all the east stuff is right there. I don´t know why we don´t post the west trips, bids, etc on the hub as well so the east guys can see what´s happening out west.
 
June Furlough Admin update says it's looking like there'll be another 50-100 recalls this year.

Anyone know how far back up the list they are now?
 
Anybody know what equipment is in the BOS domicile these days, and whether a Jan 99 could hold long-call reserve?

Wife and I are factoring a move to New Hampshire into the recall decision - probably 90 minutes or so from BOS.

Ok here are a few interesting things i've researched:

At my current employer I make a base salary of $74,000. (there are a few perks...stock, profit sharing, etc. But let's just look at base salary.)

If I return to US Airways as a 737/A320 FO at -- let's just say 4th year pay. (I was about 3 months into my third year when I got furloughed)

737/A320 4th yr FO: $73

Long call (72 hrs): $63072
Short call (76 hrs): $66576
Line (85 hrs): $74460

The difference comes down to cost of living at USAir domiciles. (would be a very difficult commute from here)

According to salary.com, the cost of living in New Hampshire is 25.3% higher than where I live today.

Charlotte? 27% higher.

Philadelphia (living in Wilmington area)? 26.4%

In order to have the same standard of living that I do right now, my salary at one of those cities would have to be around $89,000.

That means I could never have the same standard of living as a first officer on the 737 or A320. I could on the 757 if I was able to hold an 85 hour line on that airplane in 2 years (at 5 year scale).

An upgrade to E190 Captain would work (5th year or better pay) provided I was able to hold an 85 hour block.

...of course all bets are off when the contracts are merged. I suspect there would be a few $$ per hour increase across the board.
 
Not sure what your current job and qol is, but I think you'd be crazy to back to that place. If you were unemployed, that's one thing, but not with a steady paycheck. Hold out for one of the better airlines out there. 4th year pay at swa, ups, fedex, etc. are all above $100/hour. Even nwa is better than us air these days.

BS. I'm on 6 year pay. 6 didget income. What is bad is that Parker is bending over backwards for the East. Military folkes re-writing checklists...that are worse. Poor operations because of bean counters deciding computer programs. It goes on and on.

Well, yes, you are right.. because of the East...this place now sux.

Agree – have you thought about other options? At FedEx and UPS you’ll make above 100K during your second year, and it’ll only be getting better with the new contracts at both carriers. Courtesy of the “other” site:

Let me ask you a question. Seriously now. I've been furloughed since 2002.

If I could have been hired by Southwest, UPS, FedEx... don't you think I would be there right now???

Missing a few hundred PIC turbine and a whole mess of good luck.
 
From today's code-a-phone:
"Please remember as of June 11th, we still have 1,418 pilots on furlough, 302 pilots have been recalled, and all pilots on furlough have been offered recall. "

I think it's fairly obvious that when 1400+ pilots bypass recall we have all moved on to stable employment elsewhere. I'm happy where I am. The only reason I pursue this decision is to do due diligence. I don't want to look back at a very powerful US Airways in 10...15...20 years and ask, "What if?". I don't want to regret missing out on the opportunity to fly a widebody for one of the world's most powerful airlines.

To some this thread is a waste of time. Those people wonder why we haven't moved on. Why do we keep bypassing recall and yet still spend our days on US Airways message boards? Because saying goodbye to your first true love is tough... even if you know it's the right thing to do.
 
You realize that there is no way to predict what the future holds especially in our industry.And USAirways Version 2.0 has a very long way to go to become the powerhouse you allude to. If you're still young enough and enjoy what you are doing why don't you stay put, get the MEPIC time you need and take a crack at UPS or FedEx. Seems like it might be the better move.No?
