One night back in June I was sitting on a CAL 737 jumpseat heading to work in EWR. Lots of active wx on the approach. We hear a CAL flight go around. Then an American does the same. Then a FedEx 727 lands. Tower asks for a shear report from them. "Oh, I guess it was maybe + or - 20 to 30 knots most of the way down."

Then at 700 agl as I'm looking at the airspeed indicator jump all over the place, my captain calls a go around, and we divert to BWI for the night.

I gave up any thoughts of applying to FedEx that night. No paycheck is worth working for a culture that demands, or even requests, that kind of decision making from its pilots.

Gotta luv it.

When FedEx gets more heat about stuff than SWA.

But what the heck, if folks are taking aim at us and spending all this attention on us then...

We're the "hot chick" now.

you people are a disgrace to the profession defending her actions. How sad that charactor has no place in your view of what makes for a good pilot. We live in the era of the Clinton presidency, I suppose its to be expected. Godless communists may have lost the war on the economic front, but they sure took home the prize in the culture war.

Where do you get off calling people a disgrace? I didn't notice anybody defending Ms. Flinn's actions.

Here's the deal. She was an absolute joke on active duty. I read her self-serving diatribe where she lamented how she didn't know her actions were against the rules, and it wasn't fair how the AF didn't support her after she lied and disobeyed a direct order. After all, they had serious cultural issues that needed fixing, she was just young and in love.

But here's the thing. I've spoken with several folks who knew her at ASA, they said she was humble, hard-working and well-respected. She was able to convince UPS to hire her. My initial kne-jerk reaction is to be offended, but guess what, who cares? She turned her life around. UPS hired her, end of story, good for her. .

Like you never did anything stupid when you were young. No offense brother, but let it go.

.....that keeps driving her sports car off the road every couple of months and wrecking it.

You folks have a systemic human factors disaster on your hands right now that threatens the continued existence of your organization. People are just rubber-necking. Human nature.

For what it's worth I really hope you guys find a solution soon. I wish y'all the best.

Disclaimer: FedEx has great pilots. These accidents are mostly attributable to latent organizational pathogens and other cultural issues.

1. The pilot being discussed here was the best f/o I ever flew with at ASA. I would have hired her. I'm glad you guys didn't do anything stupid when you were 24.

break break

2. I jumpseated into MEM in the teeth of that front. The 727 crew had the crosswind chart out, and the instant the gusts went over the limitation people started going around. In other words, most of us will fly up to the published limitations, but no more. If there's any difference with the pax world, it's that we don't care how bad the ride is. We keep going until the ceiling panels start popping off.....

She was a Academy graduate, and not very young when all this took place.. no I didn't screw anyone's wife, or directly disobey even a 2LT's orders while serving in two wars/war zones in my time in the service. I mean it isn't like UPS doesn't have 5000 well qualified and recommended people they could be interviewing WITHOUT a less than honorable discharge, is it?

Sorry if I come off as a bit of a pre-madona on this, but I sadly suffer from something called "a set of absolutes" that I live by.

Anyway, I've hijacked this thread long enough..

That is unless over 1/2 my case of Chia Pets I ordered from Taiwan arrive broken before Xmas. If so, it's lawsuit time.

BeerSpit!

Oh man! Good one!

Look at the positives:

1. It didn't flip over.
2. It didn't catch fire.
3. It didn't flip over...then catch fire.
4. At least they overran a runway...and not a taxiway they weren't supposed to land on.
5. The F/O wasn't blabbing about how the slick runway landing on his last checkride was a "joke".
6. FDX didn't wait for the Iraq Study Group's formal recommendations before pulling it out.
7. Nobody has blamed Duane Woerth for it...yet.
8. It may or may not be useful data on the vexing question: If you put a FDX jet on a treadmill moving at the same speed as the aircraft...
9. I got 3 more Sam Adams Winter Lagers in the fridge!
10. The crew probably didn't groom the cabin right after they came to a full stop.
