2012 is when the pool starts to get drained. Got it from a very good source. Looks like they are trying to get very slim to buy another company.

Flushing any existing "pool?"

Just got this today from SWA:

Dear Pilot Applicant:

Thank you for your continued interest in Southwest Airlines. Our records indicate that you currently have an application on file for a Pilot position at Southwest Airlines and have updated it within the last 12 months. We wanted to send you an update on the status of your application and our pilot hiring. Because we are not currently hiring Pilots, we are going to remove the posting for that position from our website. You are no longer required to update your information. Once we start hiring again, we will post instructions for applying on www.Southwest.com and let you know the steps necessary to submit your most current information.

2009 proved to be the most challenging in the history of aviation, and certainly the most challenging in Southwest Airlines' history. Southwest Airlines faces many more obstacles in 2010. Given higher fuel costs and the current economy, we do not plan to significantly increase our fleet.

We are thankful for your patience and look forward to the opportunity to discuss making Southwest your home. I hope that that day will be in our near future. Until then, we encourage you to regularly check our website and corporate blog, to keep current on Southwest Airlines.

Sincerely,
Flight Ops Recruiting Team

Sorry mushroom. I know a lot of you guys are trying to be optimistic and have given me a hard time for telling you what's actually going to happen...but you have to face the facts. Southwest isn't a charity. They are trying to run as lean as possible in this environment. Between the economy, uncertainty with how Obama is going to hammer businesses that a) produce carbon b) provide health care and c) pay corporate taxes in general....not to mention fuel volitility, it's hard to envision an environment where SWA will hire for the next couple years. Add SWA's desire to grow in the Northeast (i.e. buying jetBlue)...and it looks like it is going to take quite some time before things start moving again.

Funny coming from a guy whose airline has NO scope at all.

Hey Slacker,

Perhaps you didn't read my profile - I fly a Global Express (former laid off UAL after 9/11) for an extremely wealthy family in the NYC area. Scope is not an issue with me. I have friends at SWA from my Air Force days - they feel financially secure but a few are super bored with that type of flying. They compare it to regional flying with a random transcon thrown in - their words, not mine. You may like it, whatever floats your boat...

I happen to know the General from a company I worked for in the past. He doesn't even fly for Delta. All of this carrying on for all these years seems more than a little creepy to me. Bordering on sad.

We all know it WAS/IS his dream to work for Delta. Too bad he was turned down!! And then to be snubbed by SWA too, that's why he has it so badly for SWA. He is just a creepy, sad, little loser with no friends who needs help, a lot of help.

And thats the bottom line. I personally like the fact that we are allowed to be as productive as we want to be. Not like the nanny-state ALPA 85 hr committee that we had at the legacy airline I worked for.

I feel bad for your frends from the AF who clearly didn't do their research before they came here. What kind of flying did they think we did here ? Could they really not have known how it was done at SWA ?

But then again, you've been around. No doubt, you've seen negative attitudes from pilots in the AF....from pilots at UAL ...and from pilots at Global Express....every organization has them.

For me, having previously been employed at a poorly managed legacy airline....I'm glad I am here and am still happy with my choice....it ain't perfect and we have our share of issues too.....but, overall, 11 years later, I still look forward to flying....that's what floats my boat.

You might not have to worry about scope, but what about job protection? Daddy Warbucks gets the big one tomorrow after a round of golf, then what?

How many of those AF buds ever flew at a regional? Or are they just going on what they heard?

I've flown at a regional and for other majors. SWA is like neither.

Most airline flying is boring, but bills have to get paid somehow. We fly a metal tube straight and level for 1-5 hrs at a time with an autopilot. How could that not be boring? I bet even a 12 yr old kid would go back to his PS2 after 5 minutes of sitting in the Captain's seat. Sounds like your buds were unaware of what they were getting into.

Paying the bills, time with the family and job security float my boat. I am hyrdoplaning.
