Now i wonder if the DTW closure does have to do with TPG buying Midwest. The deal also involves Northwest, and give them the right to buy Midwest from TPG in the future. TPG other option, is to resell their stocks once they go through whatever they have in mind.
I don't know exactly what's cooking here, but it is really odd that this deal is going through at the same time Spirit is closing the DTW pilot base.

My take is that the next step will be to close the DTW base, scale down the flying there, focus on the flying at out of FLL. This was a deal made with Northwest in order to be able to go through with the Midwest buyout. What's in store next ? A merge with Spirit operation or make a quick buck with the resell of Midwest.

It just shows what these big private equity firms are all about. As long as they can make money, they'll do whatever it takes at the employees' expense. So let's stop blaming each other, we had absolutely no control over it. Let's all stick together and fight for a real contract. After all this is the only thing we can get from them, as long as we fight together.

By the way, Midwest is also ALPA with the most junior captain hired in 1998. Pretty scary......

Hold up there Turbo........TPG put together an offer and COULD be buying Midwest. As of today - the general consensus is that Airtran's deal is better for everybody involved. Who knows - TPG might actually take over but neither of us know that for sure now.

Also, NK VP Ops Carlsen closed down HNL and SEA when he was a NWA manager.

I remember the HNL DC-10 base closure when Jeff Carlson was NWA VP Flt Ops. That was not during a period of contract negotiation, however. My inquiry remains whether the DTW closure is strictly a result of mgmt pressure during contract talks (the Bill Franke HP reference), or whether it is a result of NK mgmts attempt to emulate the business model of Ryanair and easyJet (Martin Harrison hiring at NK) and the resultant satellite base concept.

What's up with Pete Moore being named POTW? Was PO just mocking the rumors, or is there something to this? I've also been told by some of the NWA guys that he's coming to NK. Is it possible that he could be the next C.P., or perhaps even D.O.?

Hopefully, Ole was just mocking the rumors.

I laughed my arse off when I saw it. If I know ole, it's quick pot shot at the rumors and crap flying around here. I'm glad he still has a sense of humor.

Name one other airline in the country where your union representatives are also in the training department. Name ONE. Name One Just one. That is the beef with HL. Money Money Money

It's actually quite common. I personally don't agree with the practice, and I considered proposing an MEC resolution at my previous carrier when I was on the MEC to prohibit any Officer or Committee Chairman from being a checkairman. I never had the time to put it together since I ended up leaving, but I still feel the same way. It's a conflict of interest. That being said, there are many ALPA carriers where this happens quite frequently.

I may be wrong here, but don't a lot of those airlines that have a big training dept. also have a seperate LEC for the training dept, so in turn those guys would be union officers, but not representing the line pilots?

It's just a question because I don't know.

I love seeing our union rep flying in the right seat due to no fo's, but because he is in the training club he is dual qualified. See a flow sheet near you

How can you tell if someone in the training department is flying as a First Officer vs. acting in a training capacity. Don't the check airman sometimes appear as an FO on the flow sheet.

Although the contract specifically allows Captains to fly as First Officers when they are qualified.

Just because it's there doesn't make it right. Unless of course he really is doing training. Don't jump to conclusions w/o knowing the whole story.

Maybe he's getting checked out as a check airman.

Of course, I suppose that also ticks everyone off. However, I'm quite certain that everyone loves a certain rep when they need effective representation when doing a carpet dance :-)

OT - But do you have a cheap hotel near the FLL airport? Our DEN-FLL gets in too late to make the Providenciales flight in one day.

Thanks

Can someone explain this?

it looks as if they did some sort of proving run down to Key West, the flight number shows up on the flowsheet. This will prove to be a total problem child 4801ft. I can not wait for my turn in the barrell to try and skid off the runway. If I wanted short field landing practice I would buy a C185. It looks like they warmed up on the Dade Collier Transition training field. It is the large airfield out in the middle of the Everglades just off the Curso Arrival into FLL. Check the lastest Jepp Revision 20 I believe it was placed behind MIA.

I believe that the FAA's problem with allowing a A319 onto Key West is the runway width, not its length.

Matt,

I have the problem with landing a boat load of people there I could give two squirts what the feds have a problem with. Also the narrow runway that you refer too is already being violated every day with our operations in GUA less than a 150 ft. check the Op's Spec.
