The big picture.

The incident with this 16 year-old may be a totally different circumstance and this advise wouldn't help this situation, but I have found, from experiences within my family and with other families I am friends with, that child molestation occurs much more often than most people would like to believe. Also, I can attest that you would never be able to pick these predators out of a group as being sick in the head. These people go to church, have families, etc., etc., etc.

My point is this...If you have kids, talk to them about this freaky stuff when they are young. Nothing fancy, just discuss what inapproprate touching is and what they should do if someone attempts to do it to them.

Right word?

I've told my wife the details that have been reported so far and based on those (which is only a small part and subject to errors) and she believes the 'victim' is making this up (the rape, not the sex part). She worked in the Kentucky correctional system studying case files of sexual predators and victims during her PhD in Psych studies. She feels that comments like "no one says no to me" are to cliche. Plus the information about the phone number jsut doesn't fit either. I have no care for any kind of sexual criminal, especially after hearing the stories my wife would tell me from the files she saw; however, I think a women who uses rape as an excuse to cover her own indiscretions to save face is also horrible as they are ruining the life of a person with something that will follow them till the day they die.

If this girl is actually 16, I don't think the word "Woman" would apply to this situation. She is still a kid in my eyes. Even if it was her "indiscretion", he commited a crime by having sex with a minor. The argument may be made that she lied about her age. Though I don't buy that. I am 40, and anyone under 20 looks like a puppy to me. If he had any common sense, he could have used the phone # later and kept his member in check until he knew the facts. At the VERY least it was an incredible bone head mistake...no punn intended.

Higher plane

Who got the higher plane award? I can't find where it is, if at all, on the pilot web site.

I used woman in general. As for him committing a crime. He didn't. She is of legal age. Age if consent in GA is 16. Yes, she's a kid, by women, I was referring to females in general. His indiscretion in the eyes of the law was not sex with a minor as, by that laws in GA, she is not a minor (even though I think 16 is too young, 18 should be the min for age of consent in all states).

As for your previous comment, your right, it happens more than people know. The most interesting case of child abuse my wife reviewed in her research was one 60+ year old grandma who sodomized her grandson with a broom. That was one of the most disturbing case files my wife ever reviewed. I'm right there with her in thinking that sex offenders can never be rehabilited.

In this case however, by law, he's not a sex offender, no matter our own personal views.

Wow!

I had no idea it was 16 in GA. That's probably stated already somewhere in all these posts, but I skipped through them pretty quick. I guess the questions now is whether it was uninvited sex. Maybe the medical exam of the girl will shed some light on the events.

This whole thing reminds me of a funny Seinfeld episode, Remember the episode were George was having sex with a maid a work on top of his desk, she turned him in and he had to see his boss the next day, while with his boss, he was questioned about having sex on his desk with the maid at work and George's responce was:

"Was that wrong, Was it wrong to have sex with her on my desk?" At which point his boss say's in a calm tone, "Your Fired"

With this guy, he will be in the office at Options with his boss and asked the same thing, his response:

" Was it wrong for me to have sex with that 16 year old at the airport in uniform?" "Was it wrong for me to say NO ONE SAYS NO TO ME, after she said no?" At which point his boss says "Your Fired"

This might have made for a good episode

I think the age of consent is 14 in Kentucky...............

But then most girls are already married to their brothers by then !!!

Atlanta Journal Constitution:
Clayton Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney John Turner opposed bond of any amount. "He has no community ties and, as a pilot, is quite literally a flight risk," Turner said.
Even if rape is not proven, Turner said that by ... own admissions, he committed several other crimes, including fornication, enticing a child for indecent purposes, public indecency and sexual battery.

"He won't walk away scot-free," Turner said

I wouldn't expect the prosecutor to spin it any differently.

El Chup, you also conveniently left out the rest of the story...

Michael D. Matthews, 39, of Daytona Beach is charged with rape and sexual battery. His attorney, Lee Sexton, said there is no way his client can post the bond. Matthews would have to put up $30,000 to get out of jail, he said.

"This is an incredibly large bond on the weakest evidence in the weakest rape case I have ever seen," Sexton said.

Sexton said Matthews admits to having sex under a stairwell in Concourse C. Matthews says it was consensual, but the 16-year-old girl told police she was raped. Sexton said it is because she is embarrassed.

"After the second episode, they exchanged cellphone numbers," Sexton said. "She made no outcry to any human being. There is no evidence of rape. And people were passing by while it was going on, telling them to 'get a room.'....
He managed to rape her twice while people were passing by? And then exchanged cellphone numbers. Still doesn't add up to me.

The other parts don't matter. By own admission he committed the other crimes listed. I don't care about any of the other information. Not relevant to me and apparently not to the DA. Unless he wants to say he was forced to commit the actions he admitted to.

I also would not expect the Public Defender to spin it and smear the victim any other way.

Boy, you are one closed-minded individual. The only "admission" I've seen is that he admitted to having sex with her. Let me reiterate that if he did indeed rape her, then he should hang by his nuts til they fall off. However, in this country we are supposed to be presumed innocent until proven guilty. She is an alleged victim. Here's some more info for you:

A licensed pilot charged with raping a teenage girl in a stairwell at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport received a bond of $200,000 during a hearing Friday.

Although charged with rape and sexual battery, Michael Matthews, 39, maintains he had consensual sex with a 16-year-old girl he met during a flight from Daytona Beach, Fla., to Atlanta on August 2. Police say Matthews coaxed the girl into an open stairwell at the airport and sexually assaulted her.

Matthews is employed by Charter Options of Cleveland, Ohio. During his first court appearance on Aug. 3, he told a judge that he could not afford to hire his own attorney. The judge agreed to provide court-appointed counsel.
It doesn't appear his story has changed. So the prosecutor is correct in one sense - he won't walk away scot-free. By his own admission, he is at least guilty of public indecency. (I'm not too sure about being guilty of "fornication," though in Georgia it wouldn't surprise me.)

I guess I have not been clear.

I would not care if she was a 16 yr old runaway hooker who solicited him. What was admitted is enough for me.

39 ............. 16

Much to my surprise and dismay, actually fornication IS a crime (albiet only a misdemeanor) in Georgia!! I guess the prosecutor was right. Click on Chapter 16, Crimes and Offenses and then scroll down in adobe format to page 48 section 16-6-18 and see it for yourself! Sad but true.

Yes, you've been plenty clear. You apparently have issues with the fact that that is perfectly legal in the state of Georgia.

Sex with a 16-year-old? I wouldn't, but it isn't illegal in Georgia. If you have a problem with that, then move to Georgia and write your congressman. Or better yet, become your congressman and change the law.

(a) A person commits the offense of statutory rape when he or she engages in sexual
intercourse with any person under the age of 16 years and not his or her spouse, provided
that no conviction shall be had for this offense on the unsupported testimony of the victim.

Hmmm..."unsupported testimony"...interesting...

I'm sure neither he nor his attorney give a rat's a** what you or I think. It's strictly a legal matter, and evidence seems to increasingly point to a "he said-she said" situation. The anti- fornication law is probably one of those still-on-the-books-but-never-enforced laws (like prohibition against having chickens running loose in the town hall on election day, or something arcane like that). My guess is that he'll maybe get a short stint in jail, and then probation, for indecent exposure or lewd public behavior. He'll have that dogging him everytime he looks for a job. (His biggest worry might be making sure he doesn't wind up in the same cockpit as El Chupacabra!). I picture him twenty years from now sitting in some dingy bar in the Virgin Islands, drunk, and telling anyone who will listen about his job flying scenic tours and the b*tch who f***ed-up his life years earlier.

You probably just described the retirement of half the pilots on this message board.

Blame someone else instead of accepting responsibility. Par for the course.

He shouldn't have done it in a stairwell, and he should have checked an ID.

However, The more I see and read about the "facts" that are released in this case I am getting the picture that she was on the plane by herself, and probably portrayed herself as much older.

Personally I feel that she was probably one of the garden variety sexually active and promiscuous (sp?) teenage girls that are more and more common now. I do not know if it is a society thing or poor parenting or both, but in my neighborhood alone there are two young girls that you would be hard pressed to ID as under 18.

While out jogging it is not uncommon to see them close to getting "busy" with some of the local boys in full view of the neighborhood before their parents get home from work. Neither the way they dress or act can easily be identified as under age. Their persona more closely resembles "strippers" than anything else. Back in college I dated some 19 and 20 year olds that did not have the equipment or maturity that these two seem to portray. One of the neighbors commonly refers to them as the "Jail Bait Slut Patrol"

It will be an interesting trial to watch.

If this all does turn out to be just her invoking the "rape" word to save herself embarrassment and Flt Opts dropped him like they did, he's going to be set for life after the lawsuit against Flt Opts...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that he was an 'At Will Employee'. AND that he does NOT fall under 'protected class'.

You know how far that's gonna get him in any claims against FLOPS. ZIP DUDE!

C'mon man, you are freaking dreaming! And I would go so far to say that he'll never be a professional pilot again!
