This was flown over EMPTY to do video flights around the islands with Clay Lacy's Lear. How much do you supposed this cost? We have money to burn on this but can't bring back our furloughs? Once again the marketing department trumps the flight department in the running of the airline. Let them cancel all they want. I have been called twice in a week for JA. BTW, I heard sick calls are up again.

They money is always there for "North of Expected" commercials and PR.

As for the sick calls, we tried to warn them (BJ, BM, GB, & TK) about this when accounting & productivity types (GH & BJ) threw more guys under the bus in October AND decided to award 1/3 less Summer vacation. Of course they ignored us and figured that they could count on VSA & Premium Trip ****** to save them in the Summer. Oh well... GH & BJ are way smarter than all of us in understanding pilots.
 
What did you think of the news letter and graph depicting sick calls we got in our V-files. I believe that was a shot across the bow and if anyone calls in sick you better be able to back it up. It's going to be a long summer.

Baze: try Irifune Japanese restaurant in HNL. Good, cheap and close to the hotel. About a 5 min. walk.
 
Haven't had a chance to look at the newsletter, since I haven't had access to my v-file for a few days, but I heard about its contents. I would expect scare tactics like this from a regional airline. Anyway, I did like the MEC's E-Mail in response to that Bill Lumbergh-esque newsletter.

AKMD80GUY: Thanks for the tip. I doubt I'll be going HNL any time soon, but I'll keep your recommendation in mind.

I asked JW about sick call rate from this summer compared to last summer.
The ANSWER: The Exact Same!!!! Sick calls are not "spiking" but are at the same historical levels. Planning is just pointing blame. I know it's cliche', but when you point a finger, three are pointing right back at you!!

Staff the airline properly, folks, it's just that easy. Allow trip trades, allow reserve day trades, properly staff the correct bases, and the problems will take care of themselves.

Shot across the bow...to know your contract and your rights. This doesn't change anything. Everybody could call out sick tomorrow and they wouldn't be able to discipline any individual pilot. "I have no idea why the other 1,360 pilots called out yesterday...all I know is I was not fit to fly.

If you are not fit to fly you are not fit to fly.

P.S. - the correct answer is..."no I am not able to fly JUST one more leg back to Seattle."

Looks like things went smoothly over the weekend. However, our reserve staffing levels (especially the right seat) for all bases were low yesterday and have carried on to today. As a matter of fact, LAX has ZERO FO reserves today.

Anybody heard anything in regard to recalls? This summer is pretty much shot if they haven't put out a bid by now.....

Summer Peak is passed us now. August bids are out and have a decrease in flying from July. They have actually been doing very well on staffing with the overtime and less guys on vacation. Depending on increase next summer, I'd bet a spring 2011 recall at the soonest.

Y'all may want to look at the retirements that will occur when the first bunch of 65'rs have to retire and plan your recalls around that...I think that is around 2013....And then a couple years after that for everyone to be recalled....I think that this ship has sailed from Gig Harbor and wont be back anytime soon
 
Tico is right on..... I live in Gig Harbor and there are a abnormal amount of gummers here. When I saw one of them last weekvwe talked about staffing and he said that he had to pick up premium to pay his mortgage and other essential stuff.

A Gummer in Gig Harbor is a fairly broad statement at Alaska. If you sliced a drive at Canterwood CC you might hit 3 of them.

I deleted the post that had the more specific reference (the original poster actually contacted me after I posted my warning and asked for it to be removed, good on him for it, too).

You know how I feel about people who pick up open time while people are on the street, but as a Mod, I have to uphold the rules.

FYI... There is a captain doing his last flight today and retiring. Very good guy. Said he will miss the flying but has had about all he can take from the mgmt/political side.
 
Im hearing an increase in the PDX base by 40 lines starting after the first of the year. Bid to come out Sept or Oct. No increase in staffing just more shifting of bases around. Anybody else hear the same stuff?
 
Yes. I've heard several versions. The latest was: effective Nov. 1st, moving people from LAX to SEA and PDX with no word on recalls, Bid out at the end of the month.

You would think that is so, but the pilots have proven time and again they will pick up the slack with overtime and junior available. The crew scheduling breaking point has not been reached. They will push farther and use that as the new staffing benchmark.

Man, just think of all the open time available if 50 or so CAs retired. Holy moly... :)
 
PDX growth

I sure hope that the rumor is true and that there is a fall bid - but I would not expect it to be effective until Jan 1, 2011. If the company waits six months then PDX is no longer considered a new base and they won't have to pay any moving costs.

The giant 5 year pause button will eventually end and we can all get our careers moving again. I keep counting down the days!
 
I hear you with the big 5 year pause button. I used to have the paper version of the retirement #'s at 60 but it went in the round file a while ago. Does anybody have the breakdown of retirements now ?
