The company paid vacation will be on SWA FO rates. That's a pay cut. Still not bad for doing nothing, but less money every month.

Pilots can bitch about anything!

"Here's 11000 dollars to do nothing. Enjoy Thailand or wherever you choose to go with your time off"

Pilot: "this is BS! You screwed me. I should get at least 12K to do nothing."

It's a once in a lifetime opportunity! Grab the kids and go to New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, South America (those are the warm picks). If 11K isn't enough try planning in advance. Some pilots with a 3 year, pay cut warning, save a little money each month. It reduces their standard of living and gives them a little extra money when the disastrous pay cut happens. You can also use that money to have fun.

It sounds like a paid vacation wouldn't work for you. I understand this, and so does SWA. They have a program for guys that enjoy flying and suck at free time, it's called transition. You simply bid to go to SWA before 1/1/2015. All captains can easily obtain this exciting program/opportunity!

I know what you are thinking, " my seat, my pay, my amazing AirTran schedule".

Remember at your core you are an innovative person dedicated to giving the best flying experience to smart travelers every day. They can take your seat, they can take your pay, but they can never take your core values.

It is those core values that will lead you to transition. The smart travelers need you. The captains at SWA are excited to learn all the tricks you bring from AirTran. Flight crews system wide can't wait to hear you in the break room talk about the good old days, back on the 9. Your family has set up an entire life around you being gone 4 days a week. You need to be in a cockpit, you won't be happy unless you are going .77 with your hair on fire.

The rest of us will be on holiday or whatever they call it in Europe when you get paid to wonder the earth for 3 months.

If I can wander the earth in my underwear and new weird beard, I'm in! I can tell stories about "back on the -9" to girls stomping grapes, or shout it from a bullhorn while weaving a Vespa through Rome traffic, or on my way to Dusseldorf, to have ice cream with GL.

Funny ... all this talk about paid holidays. Yet that is only one of many possibilities - none of which are set in writing. The only thing to go off of is past experience and that isn't exactly promising.

Well, it's official (sort of).

AirTran stops flying 28 December 2014, with the company anticipating starting the last FAT guys in training by April 2015. Details to follow, including positioning flights on 29 December to park 717s. Non-trained guys will get paid monthly line minimums while waiting.

In keeping with the tenor of this recent discussion, that equates to "vacations" for some, and for others, just a lot more time to bitch.
