    instrument instructor question

I disagree mini- I have to have an instrument rating on my flight instructor certificate. That's covered by my CFI-I I also have to have my pilot certificate with the appropriate category and class rating. That's my commercial certificate with a multi-engine rating. No where (assuming you...

    ASR Approach

Actually, the ASR mins in the gov't plates are found near the beginning and are just listed in textual fashion. (I'd give you the page, but I'm out of town and don't have a set of plates with me) In the Jepps the ASR usually gets its own page IIRC. 19-xx maybe? Can't remember, don't usually...

    Deactivating Equipment

No MEL, just 91.213. Aircraft in question is a C172 and the inoperative equipment is the transponder. By the AC's definition it seems to be that simplying putting it in the "OFF" position is enough to deactivate it. However, I'm not sure that this is an item that would require a log entry...

    Deactivating Equipment

For the purposes of 91.213, what constitutes deactivating equipment? Is it enough to switch it to the off position? Pull the circuit breaker? Pull and collar the circuit breaker? Smash it with a hammer? I assume the FAA has put this in an AC, but I'm too lazy to look. Thanks.

    Accident Data

Thanks. I knew about the NTSB database. I'm looking for something where someone has already analyzed the data so I don't need to go through hundreds of accident reports to figure out the cause.

    Accident Data

Does anyone know of a place where I can find statistics regarding accident causes? Basically I'm just trying to find a site that says X ammount of people crashed because of such and such a reason. Thanks.

    contact approach

Can someone explain to me why we would want to do a contact approach? I had a student ask me the other day and I couldn't come up with a good reason. The only semi-reasonable answer I could come up with was if you had an approach with unusually high minimums. Even then it didn't seem like a...

    Aviation Museums

New England Air Museum at BDL is pretty cool. They've done a lot of restoration work in the past couple years so a lot of the planes that were sitting as junk out in their yard are now restored and sitting inside. Just added a B-29 to the inventory and are in the process of creating an exhibit...

    Name that Airport...

The guy who owned it actually based a Baron out of there. Pretty impressive for a 1200 foot runway. Bigger balls than I. http://www.airfields-freeman.com/WV/Airfields_WV_SW.htm Scroll about 3/4 of the way down for more information.

    Key lime

Unless I read that page wrong, you don't pay to be captain of anything there. It appears PC12 has his 135 mins, so he doesn't need to be "SIC" on the navajo.

    How it was?

I heard a guy speak once who had been hired at United with just his private. He had been flying just for fun, tending bar full time when he saw the ad in a magazine and applied. United paid for his commercial, instrument and multi. He retired as a 747 Captain.

    Crab & Kick or Slip

I had a student try to fly in the slip method from about 2000 AGL with about 20-25 knots of wind aloft. I tried to smack him but i couldn't peel my arm from the side of the airplane. Crab and kick for passenger (and instructor) comfort.

    reverse thrusters

Stupid question number 2. While watching NW's DC-9s do this, I've noticed that they role forward briefly before opening the reversers. What's the reason for this?

FSSs Outsourced as well? Thanks GW

I think you're reading that wrong. I don't think anyone expects your service to have been provided in its entirety within 15 seconds. I think what it means is that the briefer will have the information you asked for and begin providing it within 15 seconds. So they answer your initial call...

FSSs Outsourced as well? Thanks GW

Outsourcing? In a sense I suppose. The jobs will presumably still be staffed by americans. Will some specialists lose their jobs? Maybe. But if they have rights of first refusal, it's a choice they made. AOPA (whose views I generally support on matters GA, even if they do send me 40 renewel...

    places to buy suits

I just bought a nice interview suit at Lord & Taylor, just a hair over $200. They had a tailor in store and did the alterations at no cost. One could argue that we should expect that when dropping that kind of money on clothes, but a lot of stores don't do that.
