its quite simple. how are you defending freedom in the current situation in Iraq? This isn't WWII, that was the last time we literally defended freedom

I love people who talk about themselves in the third person like "the SWA F/U." What an ego.

Earlier on flight info, SWA F/U said that his Daddy was a captain at SWA and that he never would have gotten the job without him. Must be nice.

In a lot of ways, the military is like a parent. If you can't afford college, Uncle Sam will help you out. He will even pay for your flight training. But, you have to be sharp enough to qualify for the scholarships, flight training, etc. It is based on merit, not who your Daddy is.

SWA F/U, not everyone has a Daddy who is a captain at a major airline. Some of us have to give away several years of our lives to get flight training. If you had gone in the military, you could have learned some things - like how to work with other people or how to put service before self.

How many hours are flown (a/c + sim) during the year? Just curious how much that works out to per flight hour...


That's a number that is thrown out to represent all of the training a pilot goes through. It is from the start of OTS until being considered mission qualified. Some aircraft take longer than others.
 
So, back in the day I'm a Tweet instructor pilot. About 4 years later I get out and go to work at one of the "Big Three." (Pre 9/11) Anyway, one of my students is in the same class.

When I taught this guy how to fly the mighty T-37, he had about 40 hours in a Cessna 152. After pilot training, he became a C-5 co-pilot at an Air Guard unit. He was young and single, so he signed up for every trip that came down. He flew back and forth to the desert A LOT and upgraded to aircraft commander in about 1.5 years.

He kept this pace up for another couple of years and got about 1000 hours PIC in the C-5. Anyhow, he went from a 40 hour Cessna 152 pilot to an FO at a legacy airline in about 4 years total. He was about 26 when he got hired.

If you are going to slam someone, don't slam the academy guys. They go to the zoo for 4 years. Then have one year of flight school followed by 10 years of active duty. That is not exactly "scamming the system."

BTW, an education at the Air Force Academy costs the government about $250,000. Paying for a civilian college or a 737 type rating is chump change to Uncle Sam. A year of military pilot training costs well over a million dollars.

The guard and reserve guys are the real scam artists. Good on 'em!

I hope that's a bad joke. We just lost an ANG F-16 (OHANG) pilot in Iraq. I'm sure he wasn't trying to "scam" anyone. He's a hero in my opinion.

Freedom was defended in Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf I. In the big picture to preserve your right to be almost anything you want to be, do what you want to do, and live under the constitution of the United States of America these battles were fought.

I'm sorry but none of these countries in no way shape or form threatened America and any "freedom" that either of us enjoy. Where in the Constitution does it say we are going to force people thousands of miles away to be democratic whether they like it or not and whether or not it is the best for their country?
 
It a good thing a few men though it was right to throw the King and his troops out of America in the 1770's.

Where in the Constitution does it say we have to provide welfare to dead beats, that we have to allow illigal aliens entry into our country, etc...

This will be my last post in regards to your subject, BA. I am curious to know what I wrote that makes you think I don't believe the same thing you do. You are assuming quite a bit. Perhaps you should post in the Non-Aviation thread rather than the Majors thread. Or once again, in a political forum--which this is not intended to be. For responding to someone else's childish comment, you're not coming across as a convincing adult.

Who the hell am I? I'm the guy--along with thousands of others--that allows you the freedom to believe what you want. We facilitate the means by which you post it here, without fear of being murdered or jailed for saying it.

I certainly didn't mean any disrespect to the guard and reserve. I was enlisted in the reserve for 3 years. (My Dad was not a SWA captain) When I was an airline pilot, I was a reservist for 2 years also.

I'm just kidding around about the scam artist thing. There are plenty of war heros in the guard and reserve. In fact, probably more than the active duty.

Again Bigal does not have the big picture. The Commies were after world domination. There was a Sino-Soviet block bent on this purpose. After WWII We elected to get out of the military business, the commies did not, and then came Korea, the US was forced to meet the commies. Thank goodness for the reserves. In 1960 the said they would bury us, they moved offensive missiles to Cuba, they overthrew gov'ts to install communist dictators. There was a cold war, it was prepared to go hot at any minute. The outcome of the Cold War has us live prosperous lives since WWII. The way we reacted through that period brought us this outcome, there is no guarantee if we had reacted in any other way the outcome would have been the same.

Just the year of pilot training costs over a million dollars. I know for a fact.

The military has to build a base. You have to have hangers, barracks, a dentists office, supply, security forces, etc. Then, you have to purchase a fleet of T-37s, T-6s, T-38s, T-1s, etc. A single T-1 (Beech Jet 400) costs about 4.5 million.

Next, you have to pay for maintenance, logisitics, fuel, etc. You have to train and equip hundreds of maintenance personnel and aircrews. If you assign 500 pilots to your pilot training base, your payroll is several million dollars. You have to buy a zillion pencils, overhead projectors, computers, etc.

When we say it costs a million bucks to train a military pilot, we are not just talking about the cost of books, jet fuel and flight suits. There is a lot of overhead at one of these operations.

When I was a T-38 student, they told us it cost the government about $10,000 per flight hour.
 
There is no 5 year "early out" for AF pilots. It's either 8 or 10 minimum dependng on your year group. Secondly, your don't "bid" whatever airplane you want. It's assigned in large on a merit system which takes into account your desires.

Either a really bad egg, or just urban legend.

There is no free lunch. :-)

Sorry to burst everyones bubble... The SWA/FO's DAD is a Construction Worker and his MOM is a Nurse.

The SWA/FO worked along side of his Father, for a masonry company before/during & after college. This is where he got his strong work ethic and muscles. The SWA/FO is one hansome fella. :D

Dam, looks like I'm a welfare pilot. After 13 years hard work to qualify for an appointment to the zoo, after 4 years of busting my butt there, after one year of hard work at UPT, another year at RTU, and 8 years of working and studying my a** off in AFSOC to be a good copilot, Aircraft commander, evaluator pilot, weapons school grad, IDE selectee, 500 hours of combat time and five deployments, I decided to get out and join the airlines. I'd like to thank the American taxpayer for funding my type ratings, experience, and hours. Man, I never saw that coming. Me! A welfare case! Thanks, America, and thank you too, Mr. Disgruntled Civilian Airline Pilot Guy!

First off, respect is earned, I don't have to respect anyone. I make up my own mind. I don't care what club you're in.... There are a lot of Mil/Civ guys I respect. There are tons of Civ/Mil guys I admire. There are some I hate.

Don't cheapen my aviation experience cus, I didn't have uncle sam's blank check or get TDYed somewhere.

Dude, I'm embarrassed we work for the same company. It's easy to talk smack in some online chat room...but I doubt you have the b@lls to walk into your pilot lounge and flap your sewer the same way you flap it here!!!

It's easy not to "have to respect anyone" when no one obviously respects you!!!

Hiding behind a few "nice" comments about military flyers doesn't change your true colors/beliefs that you commonly share on this thread.

It's like me saying that you are acutally a good representative for our company...no one would believe me!!!

Remember the SWA/FO does not make policy, is not runnning for political office, is not in management, is not a check airman and is not involved in the hiring process at SWA. So I guess, you chumps are safe.

Correction to the post above: You can come see the SWA/FO anytime, He is based in MDW...he flies Tue, Wed & Thu. Maybe you two can buddy bid once you get off probation.
