New FOs leaving CAL for Southwest

Is this place just a stepping stone to get the 737 type rating just to go to LUV? Is it common now to jump from major to major?

Have fun flying the 737 forever domestically. Oh, and say goodbye to ever flying the 787.

So? I might not like the idea of this happening either from a CAL pilot's perspective but it is none of my business. These guys have the right to do whatever they want. The company should pay a descent first year rate and do a better job in the recruiting process of weeding out people they know have other ambitions beyound cal.
You can't expect someone who really wants to work for SWA/DAL/FEDEX to turn down a job at CAL hoping for a cal from one of the above can you? You have to take the job offered. This; while not happening on a large scale does send a message to our flight operations management team that despite the rapid movement expected; our first year pay and benefits package is deplorable. Can't blame the guy you speak of even though I'm well off 1st year pay.

Remember, some people don't care about what type of plane they fly, as long as the money is right. Regardless of looking like a corndog and flying plenty of intra Texas flights or many flights per day to cities that may not even be enjoyable on a layover(MAF, AMA, BUF, OMA, GEG, ISP etc), they do it. For them it is all about flying hard (5-6 flights a day with 25 minute turns and mostly short layovers), and playing hard. Who cares if it is like flying for a well paying regional, they will do it, and with a smile, until exhaustion finally overcomes them. Continental only offers them larger planes, more variety in flying, as quick or quciker upgrade (now running 2 1/2 years), and good pay once they get away from the first year. That could be a reason people leave early on, that first year pay is pathetic. The crew bases at Continental also aren't very desireable, making a commute almost necessary, but the variety in planes and layovers probably makes up for that. But don't tell that to a Southwest pilot, he/she simply doesn't care, it is all about the benjamins.

Maybe if first year pay wasn't so low and if you didn't have to pay for your own health insurance, people would stay. SWA is now the premier pax. carrier to work for..... match SWA pay, and people won't leave....

Judging by the types of planes you fly or have flown (in your sidebar), you really don't care about the size of any plane. If you actually had a chance to fly something larger, you probably would love it, and a 737 would seem like a light twin. I flew 747s for Tower Air before they went away, and it really was great. Wouldn't it be great to fly a large plane to far away places for great pay? Most majors will offer that again.

Your response doesn't address anything in his statement. You will fly 737s domestically forever, and you will most likely never fly a 787. But, you do point out the great pay at Southwest, which is what you should get for flying 5-6 legs a day at a profitable airline.

Cool....when I left a legacy carrier 12 years ago to come to SWA...I knew then and there that I would never fly a B-717/757/767/747/777/787/A-319-320-321-330-340-350-380,DC-9/10/MD-11/MD-80-81-82-83-84-85-86-87-88-89, etc

And I knew I wouldn't have any layovers in CDG/LHR/LGW/FRA/MUC/MAD/MAN/FCO/NRT/HNL/YYZ/YVR/MEX, etc. If I really wanna go there....I know how to get there.

None of the above was part of my decision making process. What was part of the decision making process was the business plan, corporate culture, consistent profits...and the history of labor relations. Also, the documented, year after year of financial profitability played a huge role in my decision. ..as did the fact that had never been ( nor has there been any ) Furloughs.

BTW...for a list of other airplanes I will never fly....f15/16/18/14/4/100/102/104/106/OV-10/O-2/G-1-2-3-4-5/Citation 1-10/ C-5-141-17-46-47-118-124-130-133/KC-97-135-10, etc.

While your above statement has merit regarding pay, I fail to see how your continuing to blame ALPA for pilots leaving legacies for other legacies?
In my newhire class 10 years ago, I had a US Air pilot, UAL pilot and NW pilot!
Your continued blame of ALPA from everything to policy to the sinking of the Titanic is getting rather tiresome. Instead of being part of the problem, try being part of the solution....Either that or just STFU!

Ah I don't know where you stay in GEG but our layover there is awsome. Right on the river upstream from the falls. One of my favorite overnights in all the jobs I have had. St. Thomas was better but I always end up smoking cigars and drinking to many Red Stripes on that overnight...

Geez, I LOVED GEG layovers but they mostly went from the 727 to the A300 some time back. I guess if I liked that dump I must really not know how to have a good layover.

This month I've been flying an OLD 727 with NO GLASS to GFK and back all month. Again--I guess I should start throwing out some apps here soon and see if I can't get a better flying gig somewhere...

There's only 7,000 more applicants at CAL willing to take the 1st year pay hit, and it incentivizes management to bring the pay scales up at the bottom.

It kinda surprises me though. If I were already off 1st year CAL wages I'd have a hard time taking SWA, simply because the OPTION of international heavy flying sounds good. You don't have to do it all the time, you could do it for a year or two then bid back to small iron domestic. At least the CAL guys have that option.

Different strokes and all that jazz...

p.s. My vote goes for the tall near-anorexic ones, myself.

Your view is very myopic, since you fly RJs. A 737 is huge to you. If you were already flying widebodies and then got bumped down to a smaller plane (like I did when the company went away) you would feel different.

Such a tool. It's not about who is better moron, it's a matter of what suits each individual person and what suits their family. Size no longer matters, but in your case, I guess it does. Not everyone is born with a small penis there Shorty.

I've got to say, I've flown large and small planes. I don't really see much of a difference. I've also flown overseas and stateside. It is great seeing some overseas locations, but the time changes are tough on the body and it is painful dealing with some of the controllers. As for loving to go home, you must have a pretty bad home life if you are taking a job to try to stay away from home.
