I think Tankerclown has it about right. Caveat, I work at SWA but have no inside knowledge on the hiring decisions.

I'd be careful about getting too worked up with the decision though, whatever it is. Tankerclown was also right that there is no legally binding law to the 'pool' or the 'pool list.' I mean, you were all told that you could 'continue the process' right, not that you were 'hired.' After 2+ years of 'continue the process' I still remember the distinction and the vaguely uncomfortable feeling that comes with the parsing of the langauge.
After saying that though, I still think that a 'continue the process' from SWA is as good a promise as you will get in this industry, better than a 'hired' from many airlines that proceeded to cancel classes and kick out new hire classes after 9/11.

There is a finite number of guys that are over 60 that already retired and of that list (200 ish, I'd guess) not all will want to come back. Those that do might delay your start a few classes, but they certainly won't delay your eventual upgrade since they will 65 out before they can upgrade, giving you LESS time as a FO (although more time if you count the time off property).

(assuming no funny business with the law and seniority, although I think SWAPA would take a very dim few to any kind of super-seniority for retread FOs)

SWA seemed to be one of the few airlines that was/is pretty open about its pool priority, etc. UPS does some kind of competitive screen, so you might be in the pool for years while guys that interviewed last week get hired before you.

So, even if some 60+ guys 'jump the line' I don't think it will be that relevant in the big picture compared to the alternatives.

It's hard to say I "agree" with T.Clown....those words just don't come out well. However, I fully understand the position we're in as poolies. What I want is information. If the 20 or so 60+ guys go to the head of the line, that's great. I understand SW's reason for doing so. Ultimately, that essentally delays us 1 class. And as it looks so far, there is one class a month. I know approximately where I stand in the pool, classwise.

I would like to know if I have time to go on another Det with my squadron. I would to tell my CP approximately how much longer he has my services. Most importantly, I have a finacial responsibility to my family.

Additionally there are rumors of mergers floating around. Couple those rumors with the new merger intergration language and there is some serious uncertainty out there, especially for folks about to place themselves on the bottom of a list. Who can saw what the landscape for the poolies would be if SW bought/acquired/mergered/whatever with XXX within the time that any of us got on property. Don't get me wrong, I'm in the pool because SW is where I want to be. But I also know that every seniority number is very important.

All this being said, I plan for the worst and hope for the best. I'm just looking for information to help me paint "the worst" picture.

The chaos of the SWA PD

Words I received 10 days ago were:

1 class Jan and Feb
2 classes March (sounds like that has changed)
1 class April and May
NO CLASSES June-Aug
1 class/month thru the end of the year.

Also planning to hire 200 more in 2008.

Whoever said welcome the volatile world of Comm Aviation...thats putting it mildly. At least SWA is very nimble in its decisions. I had no idea just how crazy it was...but I'm learning!

Cheers

I just talked with my Dallas buddy and told me that the company is only going to grow by a net of 6 jets this year. He says they hire about 10.5 per jet...so that means a total of 63 new hires this year for growth. That only leaves about 4 more classes for the year if they do 16 at a time. I'm sure there will have to be hiring for attrition...but the 150 number is probably optimistic.

Why?? Why do you continue?? Tankerclown please do not post in this forum!! POST POLICE

What's your deal? I was just crunching the numbers like you guys. Maybe if you continue to stick your head in the sand you'll be in the next class and there will be 500 guys junior to you by Christmas.

I'm not a jke406 fan, but he does kinda have a funny saying: You can wish in one hand and sh!t in the other. Let me know which one fills up first.

Just be happy SWA is company that thinks in before it reacts. They're not a "hire till you furlough" company. They saw this recession happening last year.

That said, you probably should exercise any good option to put food on the table till SWA picks it up a bit (like 2009 or 2010).

Mar?

What have you heard about Mar that changed??? Just wondering....so far PD hopes for 2, right? They told me to call on 31 Jan for an update...guess we'll see!

GK has said 5-10 jets, but also said around 5% ASM growth. The plan apparently is to tweak the schedules to fly the aircraft more each day.

Of course that plan may have already changed, it's going to be an interesting year...
