Yet another display of class. What happened to the "block user" function???

I guess they are reporting one fatality so far and some critical injuries.

Now that one 8 year old is reported dead, the homicide investigation begins. No more monday moring quarterbacks, the State of Illionois will get it all sorted out for ya.

From a Delta puke, tough airport with good wx. Tonight would have been a challenge and the LUV crews do a great job. Could be any one of us in the very near future. My thoughts and prayers go out to the child's family.

I wonder with all the snow and ice i see on the CNN shots what the reported braking action was on those runways?

What a sad story.

Airport Commissioner (or whatever his title was) reported it was "Fair"

You are Fricking right, sir.

; you're exactly right. A kid died. CHILD! A little boy is dead. If any of you giddy pukes have given the rest of humanity the misfortune of breeding, it's our loss.

A crew gets to live with this forever, playing the whatifs until they fly west.

THIS IS CHRISTMAS. A kiddo ain't gettin' his 8th (or 6th, depending on the veracity of the reports) santa visit, a crew gets to try to sleep on that at night, and some of you swine play gas station cheap shots.

My thoughts to all involved. Good luck.
Take a deep breath, relax, then wait six months or so and you'll see the two pilots on court tv behind their attorneys who will be arguing the definition of "fill in the blank".

It will be interesting.

Thank you for so eloquently stating exactly what I was thinking........

Poor little guy! :(

33 years to the day at MDW

1972, December 8: Crash of United Airlines Flight 533

"This was probably the most investigated airplane crash in history" said Deputy Cook County Coroner John Haigh when he announced the findings of the coroner's jury looking into the crash at Midway Airport. The findings coincided with those of the National Transportation Safety Board: pilot error.

Flight 533 left Washington D.C. for Omaha, Nebraska stopping in Chicago. Approaching Midway the pilot was instructed by the control tower to execute a "missed approach" pattern. The pilot applied full power to go around for another landing attempt. At 2:27 p.m., 1.5 miles from the airport, Flight 533 hit the branches of trees on the south side of 71st Street. It then hit the roofs of a number of neighborhood bungalows before plowing into the home of Mrs. Veronica Kuculich at 3722 70th Place, demolishing the home and killing her and a daughter, Theresa. The plane burst into flames killing a total of 45 persons, 43 of them on the plane, including the pilot and first and second officers. Eighteen passengers survived.

Among the passengers killed were U.S. Representative George Collins (7th), a former 24th Ward Alderman, and Mrs. Dorothy Hunt. Her husband, E. Howard Hunt, had been indicted on charges of conspiring to break into the Democratic National Committee Headquarters in the Watergate Hotel. Found in the debris was a purse belonging to Mrs. Hunt containing $10,585 in cash. There was immediate concern that the money might be linked to the financial dealings surrounding the Nixon "slush fund" to which defendants in the Watergate case had access and that the crash therefore might be linked to sabotage. In the end sabotage was ruled out, but the mystery surrounding the money and the deaths of such prominent, politically connected individuals insured a very thorough investigation.

The NTSB issued its report after recreating the last minutes of the flight based on the flight and voice recording instruments, interviews with survivors and eyewitnesses on the ground, and physical evidence. According to the report, when Midway's control tower directed the crew to abort the landing and try again, they became distracted and failed to prepare a proper landing. As they attempted to pull the jet from the landing descent, the crew forgot to deactivate the wing spoilers. The plane stalled. And then it crashed.

Not so sure the crew will be ok. I can't imagine how they must feel now that we know there is a fatality. Why does it have to be a kid? Very sad.

That's what's wrong with this board...

All of you out there that are making light of this are truly pathetic! For God's sake, wake up! A kid died! I don't care if others make fun of other airlines. Take the higher road for once. As "professionals", some of you are acting like absolute f-in pricks. What happened to compassion, what happened to brotherhood, what about solidarity?

Go ahead and make your jokes. I hope it never happens to you. I'm with Sig:

PHUC|{ YOU ALL.

I do not know WHY he spoke, or what agreement he has, I guess the same could be made from everyone from John Nance, to Jim Dent. You should direct that question to them. To answer you sepcifically, your question of who this individual was smacked with a tone of "who is this low time flight instructor".

Well, I did not mean for it to come out that way. From the FAA database I could see that both of these individuals are very experienced pilots. My AGI, CFI point was, being a civilian CFI myself, I thought of these men being some of the FBO quarterbacks from the old days. No slam intended at the man you know, but I would never speak to the press, even if it was not my airline involved. I am also no fan of John Nance. I have been in many airports when the TV crews are scrambling to get some story, and I personally wouldn't give those morons the time of day. Case in point from a TV crew tonight........

Male reporter; “By all accounts the airplane ran off the end of the runway, through the fence and through the sound barrier.” (The sound barrier he was referring to is an acoustical {sound} barrier fence.)

Female reporter; “The SOUND BARRIER, isn’t that really fast? Why were the pilots flying that fast on landing?”

Male reporter; Long pause, then he explained the difference.

Canyon,

I agree, I would never want to be called by the media and asked specific questions, there are just too many variables. I do prefer these guys over the Miles Obriens of the business, but thats all.

If I were near by and asked, I would simply say "no comment, and my thoughts and prayers are with eveyone involved".

regards,

AA

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deseased child and the crew and their families as well. Hang in there guys. You are a class act. This stuff can happen to anyone of us on a bad day! Shame on the cheap shots!

[FONT=verdana, arial, helvetica]God Bless the little child that was lost tonite. It does show that our actions effect many others and I pray that this was truly an accident and not poor judgment/gross pilot error.

I am truly sad.

Amen. I lost my top over this, because we lost sight of the cost of this mishap.

Thanks, 1800RVR.

To FN FAL: I have taken a deep breath, and I still shake wondering how I'd feel if my little girl was the one who died. Much respect to you, and you know why. Thanks.

To the rest--- Stop the cheap shots at SWA. There but the grace of god go I, and hopefully I'll get an hour or two of sleep tonight. May decency prevail and the good folks involved find peace.

I'm very sad to hear that somebody lost their life in this terrible accident..and even more so when I heard it was a 6 year old boy(assuming the CNN report was correct). They also stated that "numerous other people are in critical condition", and alluded to the fact that those people were from the cars the aircraft hit, not from the airplane.

The "expert" they spoke with, Steven Cowell, was described as "a pilot that is qualified in the Boeing 737 and trained with Southwest Airlines". WTF does that mean? Does it mean that he worked for SWA as a pilot or instructor? Does it mean that he got a 737 type rating and used a SWA sim for the training? Of course, they don't specify. He seemed to have some system knowledge of the aircraft, but not of Southwest SOP's, so I'm guessing he didn't fly for or teach for SWA.

Godspeed to all involved....and God bless that little boy.
