I have no respect for any of these cheap shots by a bunch of dicks! :angryfire
Hopefully, nobody is/was hurt. None of us know what happened.

Your righteous indignation would carry more...wait, scratch that....some weight if you got as hot and bothered when your fellow SW pilots spray all over the board.

guy on CNN says he is a pilot that "trained with SWA" and others refer to him as a "former SWA pilot." he then procedes to say a bunch of stuff that anyone who worked here would know is wrong. who is steve cowell?

If you've ever operated in MDW on a regular basis you'd understand that it's a different animal. (no F9 pun intended).

DCA is different, LGA is different, but they can all be rather challenging. If you've operated there, you'd understand.

Operationally, I doubt that any changes to MDW or Chicago operations will change as a result of this. If you've operated there, you'd understand.

Even with all the speculation, critiqueing, criticism, MDW is a viable airport. It could be better.

Canyon,

I got the impression he was an intructor pilot (retired), are those guys line guys? Not sure where the others are getting the interns from, Jim Dent sounds halfway decent, (remember they are trying to talk to the masses, not specifically pilots), the other guys was 737,777 pilot from CAL.

Glad everyone is ok, don;t much like MDW in good weather. Hang in there guys.

FAA database shows a Steven Cowell from Denver with FE, 727, 737 Ratings. The other "expert" was ROBERT SPROC. Both these guys have CFI and AGI certificates. Why is it these are the guys that believe they are the so called "experts" and must lend a hand to the investigation.

Hey can one of you SWA guys answer a question? Most places I have worked prohibit a landing on a contaminated runway with a tailwind no mater what the numbers say, can you guys do that?

Did it just get really quiet in here or what?

Texas,Could be better? The place is a dump except for the new terminal.Starting 1972 I have operated G11, N265, DC 9 10 30 40 50,B727 100/ 200, B757 200/300 and A320 into MDW and I always knew that even if I did everything perfect this is the one place I could really get burned.I always like a challenge but in reality its not fair to the pax to lower our safety standards. MDW is marginal for a jet in winter period. This snow scenario was one of my prime concerns. The other is having to land with a tailwind because of ORD traffic.Sounds like tonight we had both. These guys most likely were right on the money.SWA guys are 99% real good sticks.

Rob Sproc is a pilot for AA, with thousands of hours on the 737-800.
He is also a quality individual.

That may very well be, but for the life of me I cannot understand why any "quality individual" would offer their opinion to the media, when the public would take it as fact. Airline pilots should know better, it's easy "no comment".

He didn't speculate at all on the cause of the accident. He was thankfully providing a little bit of good information to the media that is always clueless about things like this. Would you prefer to have an experienced 737 pilot talking about this or CNN's Miles O'Moron who putts around in his Bonanza on the weekends? Take your pick, because CNN is going to put someone on the air to talk about it.

Thats a tough call MDW with the snow.

Can a HP person answer,

1. do you all use the auto-brakes?
2. can you accept tailwind landings with snow?

I wonder with all the snow and ice i see on the CNN shots what the reported braking action was on those runways?

What a sad story.

SWA at MDW...........

My sincere, heartfelt sympathy goes out to all those involved.
No one likes to here of something so terrible happening.
For those who feel that this is the perfect oportunity to jab at SWA.....
Don't. There is loss of life in this one. Be kind. This could have easily happened to any carrier operating into such a demanding airport in demanding weather conditions.

I do not know WHY he spoke, or what agreement he has, I guess the same could be made from everyone from John Nance, to Jim Dent. You should direct that question to them. To answer you sepcifically, your question of who this individual was smacked with a tone of "who is this low time flight instructor".
I gave you his stats, and also my opinion of the individual I have met and spoken with. I have read a lot more crap on this thread, than an airline pilot being asked his opinion. Do I care much for the media and they way in which they attack a story, NO, but this is the USA. The things which make this country great are also it's downfall.

Now, to end this topic with you, I am truly sorry a boy lost his life, however I am greatful your crew and passengers are "ok". I wish you all well.

You are fucking right, sir.
the censorship; you're exactly right. A kid died. CHILD! A little boy is dead. If any of you giddy pukes have given the rest of humanity the misfortune of breeding, it's our loss.

A crew gets to live with this forever, playing the whatifs until they fly west.

THIS IS CHRISTMAS. A kiddo ain't gettin' his 8th (or 6th, depending on the veracity of the reports) santa visit, a crew gets to try to sleep on that at night, and some of you swine play gas station cheap shots.

My thoughts to all involved. Good luck.

Now that one 8 year old is reported dead, the homicide investigation begins. No more monday moring quarterbacks, the State of Illionois will get it all sorted out for ya.

From a Delta puke, tough airport with good wx. Tonight would have been a challenge and the LUV crews do a great job. Could be any one of us in the very near future. My thoughts and prayers go out to the child's family.

Take a deep breath, relax, then wait six months or so and you'll see the two pilots on court tv behind their attorneys who will be arguing the definition of "fill in the blank".

It will be interesting.

33 years to the day at MDW

1972, December 8: Crash of United Airlines Flight 533

"This was probably the most investigated airplane crash in history" said Deputy Cook County Coroner John Haigh when he announced the findings of the coroner's jury looking into the crash at Midway Airport. The findings coincided with those of the National Transportation Safety Board: pilot error.

Flight 533 left Washington D.C. for Omaha, Nebraska stopping in Chicago. Approaching Midway the pilot was instructed by the control tower to execute a "missed approach" pattern. The pilot applied full power to go around for another landing attempt. At 2:27 p.m., 1.5 miles from the airport, Flight 533 hit the branches of trees on the south side of 71st Street. It then hit the roofs of a number of neighborhood bungalows before plowing into the home of Mrs. Veronica Kuculich at 3722 70th Place, demolishing the home and killing her and a daughter, Theresa. The plane burst into flames killing a total of 45 persons, 43 of them on the plane, including the pilot and first and second officers. Eighteen passengers survived.

Among the passengers killed were U.S. Representative George Collins (7th), a former 24th Ward Alderman, and Mrs. Dorothy Hunt. Her husband, E. Howard Hunt, had been indicted on charges of conspiring to break into the Democratic National Committee Headquarters in the Watergate Hotel. Found in the debris was a purse belonging to Mrs. Hunt containing $10,585 in cash. There was immediate concern that the money might be linked to the financial dealings surrounding the Nixon "slush fund" to which defendants in the Watergate case had access and that the crash therefore might be linked to sabotage. In the end sabotage was ruled out, but the mystery surrounding the money and the deaths of such prominent, politically connected individuals insured a very thorough investigation.

The NTSB issued its report after recreating the last minutes of the flight based on the flight and voice recording instruments, interviews with survivors and eyewitnesses on the ground, and physical evidence. According to the report, when Midway's control tower directed the crew to abort the landing and try again, they became distracted and failed to prepare a proper landing. As they attempted to pull the jet from the landing descent, the crew forgot to deactivate the wing spoilers. The plane stalled. And then it crashed.

Not so sure the crew will be ok. I can't imagine how they must feel now that we know there is a fatality. Why does it have to be a kid? Very sad.
