Skywest talking pilot pay raise

Just a quick question, how many people complain that Southwest flies 737-800 airplanes for 737-300 seat pay? Or that UPS flies 747 aircraft for 727 pay?

It's a very subtle difference in terminology that you're missing. A weighted average of two or more existing rates is "blended." Flying 80% more seats for existing rates is "bended."

i find this one funny- who was striking hat we have replaced- and im positive that we at skywest make more than quite a few alpa union pilots so by your definitions- you could be a scab because you (might) be one of those pilots who make less than the union standard- i believe they call it a "bar" stupid really- we at skywest so far- have chosen not to join a union- i believe the union terminology is refused.... we had/have a choice. this is AMERICA right- i choose no union- if it comes- then I deal with it. I do make more without a union though.

Maybe you should educate yourself first. The following is the definition from several dictionaries;

webster:a contemptible person b (1) : a worker who refuses to join a labor union (2) : a union member who refuses to strike or returns to work before a strike has ended (3) : a worker who accepts employment or replaces a union worker during a strike (4) : one who works for less than union wages or on nonunion terms

Dictionary.com: a worker who refuses to join a labor union or to participate in a union strike, who takes a striking worker's place on the job, or the like.

If we wanted to be a powerful unified force, ALPA needs to have 1 seniority list for all ALPA carriers. Having different lists at different ALPA carriers is ineffective.

This is probably one of the smartest things I've ever heard from a SKYW pilot. I assume there are more over there like him. Problem is, this probably will never happen in our lifetime. If it does, it would be the best thing ALPA has ever done in it's history to protect pilots and the profession.

If the expectations of you an your pilot group are low like you have stated above, then perhaps not. It is not what is realistic and what is not realistic. What is important is what your pilot group can negotiate. The more unified you are the better it will be. Also, the pay structure for the larger AC is not as simple of percentage of PAX carried. There are many other factors such as operating cost per PAX seat mile. The larger the AC the lower the number. Its based on that fact and many others that Pilot unions ask for more money for flying the larger AC. If you have low self worth then you can expect low pay.

no one is happy about the pay on the 70/90. did I ever say I was? all I'm saying, is that in the end I feel I'm doing better here than I would be at, oh I don't know, Comair. how's things going over there? how's the future looking?

undercutting is a strong word. we're all competing to provide lift to DAL. pilot pay is only a small part of that total cost.

Comair is a bad example. They are in bankruptcy!

And if you think we NEED to compete, then you're listening to management too much. The very spirit of "trade unionism" is to COLLECTIVELY stand up to an INDUSTRY and demand better pay, benefits, and work rules. This "portfolio concept" where management tells us all to compete is one of the best union busting tactics ever devised, but it only works because pilots like you buy into it!

No, we do not need to compete! If we all stop competing, the race will end. We need to all stand up and say, no more pay cuts, no more buying growth!!!

Has anybody ran the numbers to see what a Delta, NWA, UAL, FEDEX, UPS, SWA ,ASA, SKyWest...... Pilots get per hour per seat lets say at the 5 year mark? I know FEDEx doesn't have seats but the average seat load for a A300 etc. Let see who gets paid mor per seat in this industry once and for all???

Pay per seat is the dumbest concept I've ever heard of. When I flew Beavers I was averaging about 6 dollars per seat per hour. To match that in a 50 seat jet you'd be looking at making $300 per hour. Keep studying and try and think of a useful argument next time.

Pilots at ASA have been waiting for years for negotiations to come to an end. In the meantime, the pilots are getting abused, their pay sucks, and they have a very hostile attitude towards their company.

You not being an ASA pilot really have no right to speak on that since you don't know firsthand what's happening here.

The reason we don't have a contract in 4 years isn't because we have a union. If we had no union, we still wouldn't have gotten a raise, in fact we'd have take three pay cuts by now!

The reason is that we had Delta refusing to negotiate, then Skywest buying us and recessing negotiations until they could develop a game plan, then Skywest turning ASA management loose to do whatever they want... which is nothing since they all came from Delta. And through it all, the union has been hard headed and refused to play ball. But without a union, pay cuts WOULD have been crammed down our throats, because we would not have been protected bu section 6 of the RLA through all of this turmoil. Yes, we are FAR better with a union.

Funny you would say that is a dumb argument. THen you can say that it dosn't matter id SKW Pilots fly the 50 or 90 at the same rate then? Then if it also dumb why get paid more to fly more seats??? Acording to your argument? Mayne per seat rates might be something to think about more? In the Beaver didn't the PAx pay per seat? Isn't that what a Pax does on a Delta 767 to Hawaii?

It's pay per airframe, that's the issue. If you are going to look at the ratio of pay per actual seat, you are going to find some big discrepancies. There is no target dollar amount per seat that an aircraft holds, but there is a target for the equipment type being flown, and your 900 rates are far short of it. Looking at your -900 captain rates, you aren't even making what Mesa makes.

Why is $120/hr for a 90 seat jet unrealistic? That was our middle level rate on the Bae 146 before we lost UAL flying to a BLENDED RATE for that size aircraft to a carrier I won't mention. That size aircraft can easily support that rate and higher.

What frustrates the rest of us at the 'evil union' carriers is that every raise SkyWest pilots have enjoyed came at the expense of a hard fought union contract. When the AWAC pilots signed Contract '99 on September 11, 2001 (yea, you read that right) it was the industry leading contract at the time, and still the leader. Skywest pilots were talking union drive at that time, and what did JA do? Matched our hourly rates. Would he have done so if either there was no union drive or AWAC had not signed that contract? NO! Management does not work that magnanimously. Your '18 month pay freeze' is proof of that. Do what ever you guys want as a pilot group, but understand that you are looked down upon by a large percentage in this industry because you all ride on the coattails of the hard work and sacrafice of the union carriers that you yourselves put down.

Actually your wrong about the SkyWest payrates from the summer of '99. We matched Comair's post-strike payrates minus $2 per hour if I remember correctly. There was talk about waiting until Air Wiskey finished their contract and matching it, but we would have been waiting even longer for an increase.
