I don't say this often, but Speedtape and ACL65 are spot on!

The light at the end of the tunnel is a train......

Yes, My fear is the Prime market is going to melt down. That will make this sub prime mess look like a walk in the park.
When people like you and I start to fall delinquent on our house payments etc and they start to foreclose on us, that is where this will get real bad.
I fear the worse is yet to come. What we are seeing right now is being termed a "Bear Market Rally."

I am now making 60% less. My wife is a Delta F/A and we are holding our own. I have never been 30 days late on anything in my life, that means 40 years of paying on time.

My wife has always flown more than her line value and in the fall we are afraid that the line values will drop and there will be nothing to pick up as a result of the decrease. Couple that with the interest rate hikes they will put on our credit cards and it will be a very quick short trip to the BK court![

my understanding is this is what happned at unitied with respect to it's furloughs. Sure we knew soemthing was coming in about late april or may , when they announced the parking of the 737's . SO i made decisions and plans that i was going to be furloughed by octoverish ( i made it to january)

But basically the company knew the magic number and our chiarmna says, either you tell them or I do. We the company told us the next day and it was "official" at least we had about 5 months for htebottom person to prepare.

They didnt want to tell us right before the summer season for obvious reasons? Who would want to make sure they were in proper health and get everythign medically done that they and they family needed. Who would use up their sick time. Who was beign furloughed for the second time. Who would deliberately sabatage the operation and not volunteer to pick up extra flying during the most profitable time of the year for the airline. yada yada yada--- we got sued and lost and two guys lost their jobs and 2 guys got suspended 60 days.

SKIPPY Just prep as if you were to be furloughed-- what can it hurt

I switched over from comcast to Uverse and got 300 for doing so-with no contract, realigned all my bills ( i locked in my gas price at .70 a therm for natural gas) and started selling stuff i didnt want, use, or need on ebay and craigslist. Plan your prescriptions out too to have a stockpile . Also figure out how much you will get from unemployment with regards to your individual situation and see how you live on that for a few months.

just some of the things that helped us.

Trust me. I know. Everyone is going to be effected by this. My wife has taken a 25% pay cut this year and her company is still bleeding cash. Even a down bid for someone like me is not what I am looking forward to. Even though it is only a 12K a year hit as an FO, it still is the car or house payment.
It just plain sucks.
I cannot imagine what a person at a regional would do being downgraded to FO after finally making CA pay.

Speed- Mind if I crash at your place when I get furloughed this fall?

Seriously, a well thought out post. Kudos.

So much for the Messiah and his "Change We Can Believe In". That was code for communism. Instead of cutting taxes and letting the economy work itself out (with some increased government regulation), they're printing money like mad and throwing it all away in the name of socialism. The economy is tanking and they know it. But hey, at least the liberals can say they've conquered this evil empire and saved the world. Too bad the rest of the world ain't gonna save us.

just remember: management lies whenever they open their mouths.

There will be furloughs at Delta, and one or two airlines will again go bankrupt. This is not a good time to be "the world's largest airline."

Time for the Dave Ramsey plan. Rice and beans and beans and rice. I know how it is. One income, wife, 3 kids, mortage, van payment, bills..etc, etc, etc. Believe it or not, I made it for quite a while on unemployment while being furloughed. These times definately require us to all tighten up the financial belt. No more eating out 3 times a week. No more vacations to Mickey Mouse for 1 week at $2000 bucks. No more 2010 trucks/cars, boats, jetskis, snowmobiles, travel trailers, plasma tv's and all the other toys we can't afford. The storm can be weathered.

You are right. Unfortunately the economy will be the least of our problems ahead. It's gonna get ugly.

BHO is doing everything he can to alienate the only real friend we have in the middle east, Israel. When push comes to shove, the Israelis will shove back. There threat of a catastrophic, real shooting war in the middle east grows greater with every day, and, every rigged election in Iran.

I will probably be driving to the bank to give them my house keys then immediately after be served with divorce papers for doing that.

Remember, that when it seems like things can't get any better they get worse and the reverse holds true. Y'all all ( I believe that is plural) need to relax and stop listening to 24 hr talking heads. They all have an agenda. Fox is to bad mouth anything Obama or a Dem. proposes and push the conservative agenda(which did not do us a lot of good the last 8 years) and the others have/had a love affair with Obama and push a more liberal view point. The world is not coming to an end, and we will see better times in the future. Not today or tommorow, but will are not going to turn into a 3rd world country. There is too much money to be made off of the American consumer/worker to allow that to happen. Have a cold beer, hell have 3-4 and relax.

Ironically and unfortunately this coping technique will cause more of the problems we are trying to escape, as emplyees in all those industries are laid off and stop spending on whatever industry you happen to be in. I guess that's the inevitable result of building an entire economy on consumer spending, especially spending based on easy credit. I think it will still be a while until the economy contracts to a point that is sustainable based on real and not imaginary wealth.

Good Times.
Any time you meet a payment.
Good Times.
Any time you need a friend.
Good Times.
Any time you're out from under.

Not getting hassled, not getting hustled.
Keepin' your head above water,
Making a wave when you can.

Temporary lay offs.
Good Times.
Easy credit rip offs.
Good Times.
Scratchin' and surviving.
Good Times.
Hangin in a chow line
Good Times.
Ain't we lucky we got 'em
Good Times.

Possible-

What I fear most is "Obama Care." Currently, companies get to deduct the anount they spend on health insurance benefits per employee. Obama wants to eliminate this deduction (which averages about 12k per employee each year.) It gets better:

The kicker is that Obama wants to also tax the benefits you get from the company on health insurance premiums as income.... This means each employee would be paying taxes on 12K they don't actually make. We would all be paying huge new taxes on our benefits so illegal immigrants and deadbeats could get even more stuff for free!

If things were to go down this way, wait and see how fast many companies would drop health insurance as a benefit!!! Either way it would suck-either go out an pay a fortune for a private policy, or pay huge taxes if your company actually still provides insurance for you!

-Troubling times, ladies and gents... Very troubling times for everyone....
