Its the dot test that the FAA uses but I had to go thru a whole little book of about 10 or so circles. The whole medical was rather intensive to say the least. Don't know how I did yet.

What would the Japanese do if I didn't pass some other test, but showed them my letter from the FAA saying I am not color blind.

Coastinout

To the Japanese, if you fail their test, you fail. The FAA is a non-entity.

Anyone have tips for the medical?

Thx

If you're BMI is greater than .27 and/or your cholesterol is above 200 on the day of your medical, there's not much you can do. So, the easy answer is to live generally healthy. Research methods of lowering your cholesterol and exercise regularly, and you might pass. I say "might" because it's still a mystery as to why some people fail.

What carriers let you jumpseat?

As far as I know, Pal, none. Their chief pilot said that "unofficially" Hawaiian and Aloha will allow you to jumpseat with them but it's just a "wink-wink" agreement. Remember you'll be working for a contract operation not a part 121 carrier. What you do get is a bunch of ID 90 or ID 70 space-A passes that you have to apply for weeks in advance. It sounds like commuting would be a nightmare.

Yes, that's right. Jumpseating is no problem on Aloha or Hawaiian, and commuting is the mother of all nightmares.

Unless those carriers serve the city you commute from.

Obviously. But those carriers only serve the West Coast (and Vegas) and many of our commuters are from the East Coast. I tried to commute to ATL when I was first hired, and decided that I'd rather be poked in the eye with a rhinoceros horn.

Isn't it tough to j/s to Hi during peak time anyways? And do people stay there for 20 yrs or is it a stepping stone?

Yes, it's certainly tough to commute here, but it seems more difficult to get off the island trying to nonrev.

Our most senior guys have been here around 15 years. But this place seems to be more of a rest stop for people, and less of a stepping stone. It seems that a lot of people use this place until their original career paths are back on track. For some people, the current work rules and lack of commutability are becoming tiresome, and now they've announced a reduction of flight hours. For those of us looking for $, it's not a good sign, although the guys looking for days off love it.

No, I just connected through ATL to JAX. I lost Delta bennies (wife was CSR) and decided not to commute any longer, so we moved.

How do you like living in Hi?

Like anywhere it has its good points and bad points. The weather and beaches are incredible, but traffic sucks. The infrastructure is bordering on collapse, but the scenery is beautiful. And the prices are outrageous. So, depending on one's outlook determines if they love it or hate it. So far, I've been able to tolerate the negatives for the scuba diving and sunshine.

Hate to hijack your thread, but do you know any information on the HACS NCA contract or be able to put me in touch with anyone that does?!?!?!

Thanks for any help!!

Be in shape. Have a good diet. Have no medical issues. Just like an astronaut.
I did the wasinc interview in 2002 and made it thru the process but decided not to take the job due to the low guarantee and terms of the contract, but at least I know I am healthy.LOL

Are pilots happy for long term and how many hours a month?

I’ve been reviewing previous posts about WASINC, IASCO, and HACS contracts with JALways. Thanks, they‘ve been very helpful, but I still have two questions.

My big question is, are guys happy there for the long term? (I’d move my family to HNL, so no commuting.)

My 2nd question is about the lines. Someone said the flying hours have been dropped. How many hours is it reasonable to expect a month? Are you on reserve making guarantee (50hrs) for a while or do you get a line pretty quickly?

Thanks in advance.

It seems that a lot of guys are happy, but for me, if things continue as they are, I likely will not renew my next contract. The upgrades have slowed, we're making our minimum guarantee with no opportunity for picking up trips, and they're talking about possibly transferring us to Anchorage to fly cargo. It cost me about $15,000 to move from FL to HNL, and I refuse to move again to Anchorage, and I have no interest in commuting. Lifestyle is what it's about for me, and this job is getting worse all the time, regardless of which contractor you work for. We're flying about 40 hours per month average. Some advice: ask ALOT of questions if you interview here.

Resocha - how long have you been there? I heard the lines are suppose to impove after summer? Is that true? Why have the upgrades slowing down? I thought you guys were getting 400s and 767s starting the beginning of next year. Can they force you to move the frieghter side once it starts up?

Thanks

I've been here a little over 3 years. They say the lines will improve, but I've been through two furloughs (not that I think I'm getting furloughed) and my experience is that management will always put the best spin on any ugly situation. So, although they claim the lines will improve, I'm not going to count on any extra income.

We are getting 400s and 767s. The 400s will begin arriving in 2007 and the 767s by 2009. But there are multiple unknowns: Will they hire directly into those fleets or transition people? Just because JALways is getting the 400s does not guarantee any of us will see it. They've even talked about direct-entry 767 captains (from outside the company), and you can imagine the revolt that would cause.

Until recently this has been a great place to work, but JAL is losing tons of cash and soon will go into severe cost-cutting mode, and JAL has no loyalty to me. I have the type rating and about 1700 hours in the whale, time that will be valuable elsewhere.

Like I said, if you're going to apply here, ask tons of questions. There's nothing really bad about the place, I'm just seeing the same pattern that I've experienced elsewhere, and I'm not optimistic.

KAL is looking for 747 guys. Check out Gap Aviation--they are a recruiter. I recently helped a guy with some 747 sim time that will commute out of DFW. Apparently the rule is you can live within 2 hours of any city served by KAL, so for you guys near major cities that just might work.

Resocha,

Thanks for responding. Are you in your second contract and getting close to upgrade? Can you be transferred to ANK mid contract or do they have to wait till you renew?

Lifestyle is key for me as well. It's the whole reason I'm considering JALways so if I get the interview I'll ask those questions.

I'll soon be up for my second contract. There's debate about whether one can be transferred mid-contract, it all depends on interpretation of contract language. I'd post the lingo but I'm on an overnight and the contract is at home, and I can't remember specifically what is written.

This isn't a bad place to work, but it's not the place that was sold to me during my interview.

Any more info about coming interviews or JALways ???

Resocha, are you going to renew your contract?

You sound unhappy.

It's not that I'm unhappy, and it's really not a bad place to work, I'm just frustrated at the way the job is becoming. I've been happy here until recently. Regarding renewing the contract, I'm still on the fence. Just a couple days ago I was offered a job with a competitor, and I'm trying to decide what to do. The pay is substantially better, but I may have to move again. Yech!

But JALways is not getting 744?

Shouldn't you wait til' get the 744 type and PIC time on it before start looking for another place to work?

Life is full of the shouldas and couldas. By the time I get to 744 captain, I could have already upgraded at the new job. I have to make my decisions based on what I know today to be the best decision, not what might happen in five-plus years. Unfortunately, forecasting a good position in this industry is impossible. I'd hate to wait all those years to learn that the company will direct-hire 744 captains into what I thought was my seat. The company has made no official announcement that the 744 captains will be from the present JALways classic captains.
