8444 (3 Dec 00 hire date) is one of the latest to be called and 8655 is the bottom man on the seniority list. Letters went out for 2 classes in January.

The latest SKYNET ( 8 Nov) proposed vacancy listing has 99 Captain positions and 132 FO positions with training dates in Jan, Feb and Mar. The effective date is 1 May 2007. That would mean there really will be a need for 231 FO's to fill the list as present FO's slide up with Captain vacancies being filled too. All pointing in the right direction to have everyone on the list called once very quickly.

I think that up until December, United was hedging their bets on the retirement age changing and were merely recalling enough to make sure that next summer doesn't have a shortage of pilots. Now that the age won't change, I would expect 40+/mo for Jan-Jun classes or until they run out of recallees, whichever comes first. They'll probably run out of recallees in May or June.
Get ready for interviews next summer and newhire classes in the Aug/Sep timeframe.

I spoke with Cindy at ORDFO yesterday. She said they expect to start hiring in the first quarter of 2008. I didn't ask, but I suppose they are presuming many of the pilots on bypass will return. If they don't, hiring would start sooner.

7-d-1

I'm 110 from the bottom (3/12/01), and I decided this week to try and go for a 7-D-1 employment contract LOA (with my own company, which may complicate things). I want to go back, but I need to try and buy myself 12 months. Has anyone tried this or heard of it working? Coomans seemed to indicate that the employment contract "concurrences" are a rubber stamp if you have yet to be offered a recall. We'll see.

I believe that you are talking about an employment contract with your current carrier. If so, United will have to obtain a copy of your contract. And, it is only good for up to two years or the end date of said contract.'

A guy in my class at JB did this and was recalled prior to his two years at JB. He accepted the recall and went on a LOA until his two years were up. I'm pretty sure he accrued longevity during this time.

Good luck to you. Have you been called yet?

What about if you've already passed at recall (the first time)? Can you go on LOA based on the Jetblue 5 year contract? If so, do you go thru your flight office or Coomans?

I believe you start with your flight office: LOA's are processed through the Chief Pilot, and they send their recommendation to WHQ. Call them and have them mail you the LOA paperwork. If I remember right, to get an LOA of 1 year or less can get approved at a lower level than a LOA of over 1 year.

As I understood it from Coomans, if you have already been offered a recall it is too late to request the Company's "concurrence" to accept an employment contract. As I have yet to be offered a recall, I figured it was worth a shot. He also mentioned that a 3 month LOA was pretty much available for the asking in any case. I'll let you know what the flight office says...

Please do post your results. Still not sure why newhires are expected as early 2008. Am I missing something or did I read only 300 recalls for next year? I'm just guessing but I would think the second time around the number accepting recall would be considerably higher, no?

Andy, you may well be proven right - maybe lots of those guys and gals are never coming back. But I suspect a fair number of them will look out beyond the 10 year horizon, and pause for just a moment before saying bye-bye to the big U for good.

One of your options when you get "the call" is to accept a recall with a LOA request. B.N. will fax you a LOA request form which gets forwarded to your old flight office. You may request a personal LOA for up to 3 months that will take effect after you complete the 5 day returning pilot training course. The final decision is still made by WHQ and is based upon projected staffing levels on your new equipment/domicile. You will accrue longevity and burn off your equipment freeze while on leave and you will be able to bid/trade domiciles. I hope that helps!
