Hey,

I was alerted on Friday to expect another Kingair job offer this Monday. The company is moving a plane close to my home town and they offer top pay for a KingAir Captain in our area. I think it is like 24 to 34K per year and no factory time.

What should I do?

What do you have going on now? I see 757/737 on your experience--are you laid off from ATA? Can you live on $24k/yr.? I don't fault anyone for taking a QOL improvement over money these days. JMO. TC

If all of your prior posts have been anything other than a joke, it would appear the answer is obvious.

If on the other hand all of your prior posts have just been flamebait and BS, then by all means, have everyone discuss the relative merits of this opportunity.

I wish it was a joke. That is what flying jobs go for around here. Either I take it and have a plane to fly or pass and risk there not being another offer.

There is a part of me that still carries the dream, but like you said I can't stomach most of it anymore. You never know perhaps I could luck into a great job like some of you guys. As long as I keep my chips on the table maybe a good one will come along. However, this one is probably another waste of time.

Well the job has some good and bad points.

The good:

I would be paid to fly again, and perhaps it would resurrect my career.



The Bad:

I would loose money over what I do now.

I would become a stooge for a rich family.

I would be gone most weekends and miss opportunities with my family.

I would be on the hook 24/7 and it is hard to live a peaceful life under those circumstances.

The time I built would only amount to a few hundred hours a year, If that.


My logic says "stay away". My heart says to "go for it".

Dude,

I really dont understand you. You have complained over and over again on other threads about how you hated Part 135, and when you see a Learjet overhead it makes your stomach turn. Yet you are now about to get back into a King Air, have no schedule, no life, and all for 24k to 34k a year? I wouldn't get out of bed for that amount of money. At my other career in the insurance business we have Secretaries that make TWICE what you just quoted and neither of them have College degrees.

Hell for that amount of money you might as well go to a regional. Or heck why dont you go work for a place like Airnet? New hires there can make $40K a year to start and the only work Monday-Thursday.

You are your own worst enemy. You bitch and moan about the industry yet you are willing to bend over and take up the keister with no KY just to fly a plane. Don't you have any pride?
 
By the way what part of the country do you live in?

In other threads you mentioned that you would be flying a King Air 200. If that is what you will be flying then 24K-34k is WAY below what the going rate is around the country. If you accept a job making that much then you get what you deserve.

Not much better than being a 5 dolla ho.

To answer your questions. I live in Washington State. Aviation jobs just don't pay all that well overall here. Even Lear Captains barely reach 40K. It just isn't enough money.

I have a family of four small sons. For the first time in my adulthood we have a good and peaceful life. During my aggressive pilot days we moved a lot and lived in some bad places to keep the dream alive. A move to the city to make a few thousand more a year wouldn't be worth it.

I don't know if you are married or have a family but it changes things. There are few opportunities here and what there is ain't so good. Employers know it and exploit the situation.

The guy I spoke to was a 42 YO DC-6 Captain for Everts. We spoke for over an hour. He wanted to get out of AK and was asking me how I did it. I still have the floats for sale. They are off of my F19. I bought the plane in ANC over 10 years ago. I think I will try to sell the whole thing this winter.

...i dont know much, but i DO know 24k to fly a 200 in washington is wayyyyyy too low :(

hell the guys in kansas (read lowest cost of living in the country) make about 38 to fly a 90 :)

Would I take that job for that kind of money? Absolutely not. I don't know what the problem is, but someone with your listed experience can command significantly better - even if it's "just" a King Air. Go in and demand more - if they want someone with your experience they've got to pay for it. If it doesn't work what have you lost? Don't prostitute yourself.

That's because nobody wants to move to Kansas...
 
There is a B 200 job posted on 350 right now. You need to be flexible for them, but get the wonderful advantage of being a contract pilot and you pay for your own recurrent training too! Their daily pay better be a heck of a lot then.

A year ago I had another King Air opportunity. They asked for my salary requirements and I told them at least 60K. Their counter offer was almost half. I stalled and soon after the plane went away and they didn't buy it. They did however send me to King Air school and payed my whole way. You would think I could find something out there, but there are few good jobs in the area.

Weak compensation packages, poor qol issues, etc, are a part of this industry as you are probably well aware of, they are a dime a dozen unfortunately. It is easy for many to make excuses for you "not" to accept the position, I have no excuses other than if it were me then I would pass on this offer. Too many other operators out there that *pay* a decent salary. Sometimes patience is a *key*, keep looking and pursuing other options and opportunities. If you are that "desperate" and in need of something right away then it would appear that your decision is already made. Good luck in whatever you decide that is in your best interest.
 
The reason why the pay in your area is so low? Pilots continue to whore themselves out in your area.

Everyones pay is low. I guess it is the custom and expectations of local employers to pay little. It is largely a farming community and they refuse to pay more. Thankfully our costs of living are lower than most places.

if you do this for what is = to no money, you are doing yourself and your family wrong. as if that wasn't bad enough, the worst part is that you are f-ing me over when i try to demand a respectable wage for what i do. i don't take too kindly to that.... but i know you probably aren't thinking in those terms, so i am not going to take it personally;) .

you posted here looking for advice, and for better or worse, that is how i see it.

we all need a break, a leg up from time to time, but there are some serious principles involved here that you should not violate. have some respect for yourself and the future of your family. if this "wealthy family" can't afford to pay a pilot a REAL salary, i doubt that their airplane is in the best of condition if you know what i mean. in your shoes, i would treat this as a big sign to stay away from this situation.

if it is a choice between this or quiting flying, give it up.... the liability alone is not worth it.

Unless your farming community is in Argentina, there isn't any reason you should be paid much less than anyone else.
If an owner can afford $4 or $5 per gallon for Jet A, then he can afford to pay his pilots an industry average wage. Otherwise, there are a few airlines that would be glad to take his money.

BS. You need to go out and re-look at payrates. 40K for a Lear is about $20 less than the low end of the national average.

Good then your FIRST obligation is to your family and not your "dream" to fly airplanes.

Hanging it up

You guys are all correct. It dosent make much sence to keep going under the current conditions. All I can offer is that is is difficult to walk away from so much effort and hardship. In addition as long as I keep an iron in the fire there is a chance things will work out. I have a good resume and there is still a thin chance that in a few years I could get picked up by my dream company. I would not move to the city to earn a little more but I would consider taking a low paying position close to home if the situation was acceptible. I would need to have the opportunity to earn a living outside of this job. I'll have to wait and see what they offer and what their attitude is like.
