Total for me was about $16,500 for everything through MEI in 99-01. I just went to the local flight school. I maybe only paid for a couple hours of ground school...self studied for all ratings on my own and instructors were comfortable signing me off. Also struck a deal with the owner for a 50 hour block of 172 @ $60/hr wet and a 150 hour block of 150 @ $38/hr wet. He also gave me 10 hours PA44 @ $100 since they had just put in new engines and needed the break-in time before they could instruct in it.

It never ceases to amaze me when I see people spending 2-10 times more than what I spent for the exact same things. Support your local flight schools...they will treat you much better than the pilot factories and will cost you thousands less.

Agreed. Paid about $5000 for private, instrument, commercial in the early 90s. Multi was about $1000, CFI was about $500, CFII was about $300, MEI was about $500.

BBA from University of Texas was less than $5000 in the early 90s. Never added a rating unless I had the money in the bank to pay for it.

Having a full time job the whole time ensured that I never had any debt from flight training or college. Some of these "student" loan payments I hear about are twice what my mortgage payment is. Yikes.

Wow! As much as some of you have forked out, I'm glad our rich uncle paid me to learn how to fly.

Got my CFI in 1973, GI Bill paid 90%, cost me about $125, I rented a C-150 for $5.00/hr dual. Paid $275 for my ATP in a Grumman Tiger in 1978. That is all the flight training I have paid for.

99-01, 0 time - comm, inst, perf, comp, tailwheel... 26K from 141 school. CFI, CFII, Multi... 4k part 61. Paid cash for it all.

someday if things work out for you like they did for me, you too can join AARP. BTW I think I got to fly neater airplanes, ones where the pilot really flew the airplane, no GPS, no FMS, no flight director, etc. Real men's airplanes instead of these robot airplanes.

That's OK to call us Grandpas. At least we can fly airplanes without going through 400 feet and calling, "Speed mode, heading mode, autopilot on." We also don't wear ear plugs to an IPod, so we have a situational awareness of where every airplane on frequency is in our relation. Right YIP?

Hey gramps, I can also fly without those callouts, and I do it quite often!!! BTW-some of you "grandpas" cant fly without the help of the autopilot, Ive seen it numerous times!!

Now all of have seen pilots of all ages to whom the autopilot is only source of flying salvation. BTW how about the age of the airplanes in my profile. I am flying a 1945 C-47 to KPTK tommrow, no autopilot, no FMS, no FD, no auto engine temp control, no automatic gear down and uplock, lets see what does the C-47 do automatically, oh! yes it regulates the Hyd pressure between 750-900 PSI.

You've flown quite a few classics! I actually had the thrill of flying my dream bird a few weeks back, a P-51 Mustang. What a thrill and an honor to fly such a great bird!!

I am a Bolivar alumni. I bump into one every once in a while. It was like $16,500 for private through CFII and that included housing. It just was not that cheap to the group that was about a year after me when they closed the doors and took everyones money.
