Not likely It could be an even playing field, and with our added INTL presence thanks to NWA, our days could be brighter each year forward. And really, most SWA pilots were NOT happy about age 65, Wrong again, When we voted on to continue the funding of the age 65 effort by our union it passed by a good margin. and you old fellas got lucky. You just gave FOs an extra 5 years 5 more years of pay on top of what they were going to get, still a good deal. We had upgrades at our airline at 5 years when I got hired. Prior to the age 65 change it was running at 6-1/2 years. Now it may be 10-11 if everyone stays to 65 which is very unlikely. How long are the upgrades at Delta or Northwest currently? (at 5 legs a day) of lower pay than was originally advertised, which you did not have to endure yourself. But hey, now everyone can postpone paying for their kid's college, or buying a Captain house, so you can not be as bored on the golf course. Enjoy those options that you were given too. Actually the options paid for half my Captain house already. The others are still in play for quite a while longer. But Thanks for your concern! See you in ATL, you will enjoy it.

No. I will not support NWALPA jumping in bed with NWA management to hatch a plan to accelerate retirement of MD-88s so we may be able to achieve a more favorable SLI. From our position, it appears that your leadership is doing exactly that. Now... will you support it?

That's magnanimous. Thank you for your solidarity. Question for you: will you support an SLI that gives Jr guys on both sides a decent bonus and guarantees no furloughs? Don't worry about answering that one, we have MUCH MORE INFORMED people than we who trying to answer that for both sides, with their own interests at heart).

My answer: No. If DAL line guys have to vote on an SLI that only exploits NWA pilots for their own expense, they will vote it down and ask the negotiating team to go back to the table. The next XX years of pilot relations are at stake and it's worth a little pain to get it right. Even the Juniors will agree with that.

Now, if the team goes back to the table and still no progress can be made, then what's to be done? It's perfectly reasonable for each team to look to their own interests and go from there. Re: the -9's vs the 88's, the -9's can be parked or sold for CASH which would help in the very short term. I don't think it's the same with -88's. Also, I thought there was chatter about -90's coming online soon which would theoretically raplace -9's?

Here's the irony of our debate: implicit in the original post is the fact that a merger is imminent, yet an NWA guy is basically asking a DAL guy to say no to DAL's internal proposal for NWA's sake. I applaud NWALPA for holding out for their best interest (that's just good business), but at some point the clock will stop. In these cases, it's best to approach the situation from a position of strength and asking the other team to disapprove a winning proposal for them just doesn't make sense.

NWA pilots get a clue!!

First of all, if DC9s are going to be parked in a merged airline soon, then I don't think ANY Delta pilots should be furloughed. Nope. I think that is one reason to keep seperate companies, until the unwanted airplanes are removed. NWA guys knew what types of planes they have at their airline, a bunch of 1960's built clunkers that could be parked with high gas. If they come over to Delta, that isn't the Delta pilots' fault---they never interviewed for DC9 FO or 747FE. If NWA stayed independant, they would hurt even more by themselves. Why does Steenland want to merge so much? (besides the money pot waiting for him) That may sound heartless, but guess what? We embraced you with open arms and a fair deal, and your greenbook agenda man ruined it. Our pilots should not take a hit thanks to your old planes.

Thanks Zip for your diatribe. Look at the name of this thread. You do NOT have to look at it if you don't want to. Just predictions. Nobody really knows what will happen, but it is interesting to watch and comment. That is what this board is about. All I can say was WOW to what has happened so far in the last 24 hours. I think we could try a DC9 Super HUB at LBB. Think about it, we could use 68 DC9s to overrun the place, and kick Southwest OUT. We could have hourly service to beautiful cities like Harlingen, Midland, and maybe Amarillo. I'd bid that in a heartbeat! That would be fantastic!

Delta, pilots reach deal on contract: report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines (NYSEAL - News) and its pilots union have tentatively agreed on a contract that would give pilots a pay raise and an equity stake if the carrier were to merge with Northwest Airlines (NYSE:NWA - News), according to a Bloomberg report late on Thursday.

Northwest and Delta would not confirm the report that Delta had negotiated a separate deal with its 7,000 pilots. Northwest's 5,000 pilots would be asked to join under a single contract later.

The apparent deal is another sign that Delta and Northwest could move forward with their plans to create the world's largest airline as early as next week.

The deal does not resolve the sticking point that prevented Delta and Northwest from proposing a merger in the first place last month -- how pilots from both airlines would resolve seniority issues and work together under one company.

In fact, the two pilot groups had agreed during their negotiations on seniority to back a proposal for higher pay and a stake in the combined carrier.

Sorting out seniority could take months to complete or even wait until after a merger is finalized.

Both pilot groups, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), have said they would not support consolidation unless terms of a deal were favorable to them.

Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the talks, said the combined company would retain the Delta name, its Atlanta headquarters, and be run by Delta Chief Executive Richard Anderson. Those three elements were part of the original plan as well.

The merger would include a small premium for Northwest investors, Bloomberg reported.

On the New York Stock Exchange, Delta closed up 9.4 percent at $9.75, while Northwest climbed 12.6 percent to $10.87.

Merger agreements are almost exclusively announced on Mondays. Don't know exactly why. The bankruptcy epidemic really should have lit a fire under both DAL/NWA Boards of directors and CEO's. Financing could dry completely up in days not weeks.

Think of it this way, they already shot an approach down to mins and missed. Bingo fuel and they must now shoot a Cat III at their alternate. Hey guys let's hold some more and see if it improves!

My bet is on Monday 4/14.
