ASA Voluntary Furloughs

SkyWest has not yet furloughed. There has been some talk of it, but it's all been rumor--management has no current plan for furlough, and this has been reiterated several times.

However, as a SkyWester (and a pretty junior one at that), I can't help but think that remaining so overstaffed for too much longer is sort of an untenable position for the company. But then again, as everyone keeps trying to tell me, I don't have the big picture. All I know is that I have an 85 hour line for January, with one CN trip. It'll likely be the same for Feb.

Take it one bid period at a time. That's all you can do.

But it's ok for those who are, and have been, members all along to pay their fair share right? Is that what you're saying? The amount would be the same for those who are members as it would for those who chose not to be members. They would just have to make up for the time they didn't pay. Only fair way.

Those non members pay the same as you and me. They refer to it as a contract maintenance fee. Someone far senior to me would have to expand on the "exact" details, but the way it was explained to me was that some pilots were not eligible to be grandfathered in when ALPA first came on the property. Therefore, some would have had to pay rather sizable "back dues".

I don't have an opinion on it either way. The purpose as it pertains to this thread was an earlier post that suggested those non-members might not be eligible for furlough protection. The contract is very clear that they do indeed enjoy such protection; even listing them by name.

For the sake of the guys that I've convinced that ASA would be a good place to hang your hat, even temporarily, I do hope that this does not happen.

More SKYW west flying in ATL after we've furloughed would be salt in an open wound.

But I think United is kind of like General Motors, in that the government wont let them fail. We'll see.

As of today, no major changes for OO in ATL thru 02/09. Changes are done 45 days prior at the min.

"nonmembers would also receive signing bonuses as they pay contract maintenance fees equal to union dues".

1. Don't believe everything they tell you.
2. The reason for the non-member getting back pay is a "legal" issue. Even if you are not a member you are still represented by the bargaining unit at that airline so they would have to include you in the back pay.

WHEREAS: The Company and the Association have entered into a collective bargaining
agreement dated September 15, 1998 (the “Agreement”) that contains a provision entitled
Section 28 Agency Shop.​

NOW THEREFORE BE IT AGREED:
1. Any pilot employed by the Company as of October 29, 1995, who was not a member
of the Association shall not be required to become a member of the Association or to
pay to the Association monthly dues or service charges or in any other way be subject
to the requirements of Section 28 of the Agreement.​

Executed this Fifteenth day of September 1998
This Letter of Agreement shall be effective upon the effective date of the basic Agreement
and shall remain in full force and effect concurrent with the Agreement and become part of the status​
