BDL TAF at the time the flights diverted... between 16 and 18Z I believe:

BDL went 1/4SM +SN at 1740Z and stayed that way all night, picking...
Dude, with all due respect... (this has been bugging me for a while) it's in pretty bad taste to publicly wish for a company to whisk jobs geographically away from people in your field so you can vulture those jobs. What makes you think you'd have been hired, anyway? From what I can tell on this...
I am at a major, though not one of the legacy airlines. I definitely did not benefit from the way things "use[d] to be", in fact I started my airline career less then 2 years before 9/11 when the industry bubble was just bursting.
We all know that making the big career move is all about being...
A friend turned this Annapolis ARINC job into a pretty lucrative corporate dispatch gig after about a year. You apparently get to know the corporate clients pretty well.
Hey guys, I've been reading this interesting thread and I have a few thoughts.
I'm a career dispatcher myself and I definitely sympathize on the issues of pay, security and respect we all face. But let's not pretend we are alone in this business.
EVERY airline employee (with the exception of a...
My class (ca. 2000) used the DC-9... I remember the manuals were all so badly xeroxed they were barely usable.
Echoing what the others said about now having a license to learn. Be ready to check most of your dispatch education at the door when you start class at Mesaba. Pay attention, be humble...
Incorrect - there's an airline at JFK that demands they favor departures over arrivals, but it's not who you're saying it is. Every day JFK sets up two departure runways at 5pm, just before the big international push. I think it's kind of foolish to say they are doing that to benefit an airline...
Not trying to be unhelpful bg, but surely your airline has a pass bureau you can call? Interline agreements have worked differently at every airline I've ever worked at, and they change all the time.
The only reliable answer you'll get is from someone in the know at your own company.
With all due respect, Ruskie, a personal fuel comfort zone is not a good enough reason to ground or delay a flight. Unless you would like to make the argument that with all other factors being equal for two flights except the captain's name, the amount of fuel that is "safe" for dispatch...
I certainly can see a pilot's argument that it's their butt on the line in the air. But what is a bigger compromise to safety:
1. Asking that pilots and dispatchers be more accountable for fuel planning (i.e. don't bring additional fuel unless you have a good, documented reason to) or
2. Using...
Just to expand on that point...
§ 121.533 Responsibility for operational control: Domestic operations.
(a) Each certificate holder conducting flag operations is responsible for operational control.
(b) The pilot in command and the aircraft dispatcher are jointly responsible for the preflight...
Yes, farewell to Skyway and best of luck to everyone looking for a new job now. I did 5+ years there and just got out last fall.
The way Hoeksema & co set that perfectly good little airline up to fail over the last few years was one of the sh!ttiest things I've ever witnessed in this sh!tty...
On a related note... best wishes to our colleagues at ATA, Aloha, Champion, and Skyway. Remember them when complaining about the job you have.
The state of dispatch is directly related to the state of the industry, of course, and they're both going to get worse before they get better. Tough times.
As a Skyway person (non-pilot) from 2002-2007, I'm still salty about how this all went down. The writing was on the wall the day DR came back.
I was fortunate to bail out of that organization a few months before the announcement, but I have nothing but best wishes for the many friends I had...
If an O2 mask can't make a seal on your face you may not be qualified to ride on the cockpit jumpseat, which rules out a beard. Depends on what the GOM says for the airline you're flying, of course.
D. Reeve is President of Skyway. Bedson is the new DO. Yes they worked together back in the day.
Skyway is NOT Skywest. (The good people of Midwest Air Group will remind us that every day.)
Who told you he had anything to do with fixing Skyway's F'd up ops?
BG, if you can handle the pilot lifestyle (more susceptible to industry cycles, many nights away from home etc.) I think you should go for that.
I think the big question is - where do you want to be in 10 or 20 years?
Left seat, big aircraft, decent paycheck? Go fly.
Airline management? Go...
