Southwest Says No Furloughs Planned in Boeing 717 Buyer Search

By Mary Schlangenstein on March 26, 2012 Bloomberg Businessweek

Southwest has no plans to furlough pilots and flight attendants as it searches for a buyer for 88 Boeing717s acquired when it purchased AirTran Holdings Inc. in May, Chief Executive Officer Gary Kelly told employees today.

Concerns that jobs would be cut arose amid reports Southwest had reached an agreement to shed the 717s, most of which are leased from Boeing Capital Co., a unit of Boeing. Leases on the planes run as long as through 2024, and Dallas-based Southwest has said it’s working with Boeing to find a new owner for them.

“We’ve had no discussions, no talk, no hint with any of you about job furloughs,” Kelly said in a weekly phone message to employees. “That means we would have to shrink this company and we have absolutely no plans to do so. We have a lot of work under way to put Southwest in the position where we can grow this company and add jobs, not subtract jobs.”

Southwest is searching for “an opportunity to place the 717s” with another airline, Kelly said, declining to comment on reports it had already reached a deal. Southwest will retire 150 planes during the next five years and replace them with new aircraft, holding its fleet at about 700, he said.

Kelly reiterated that the airline is preparing for future flights to Hawaii, Alaska and close-in international routes. The carrier will add the first two larger Boeing 737-800s to its fleet beginning in April.

Oys, I said it about a year ago and still stands today, no one is going to get laid off. Our company has integrity.

We've been told before that our jobs were safe, only to find out a few months later that we were threatened with losing them. We take it with a grain of salt. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

I wasn't in the room, but I thought the position was no integration, not no jobs.

Tell us how you would read into that from tran land? You honestly think we would be operated separately forever? No integration meant no job eventually. I may have taken a few years but......

I heard from a good source that ALPA is working on 800 AT pilots that will have a choice to go to DAL

That's a big "NO" for me, brah. I ain't wearing no hat and you guys don't represent with leather jackets. Southwest guido fist pump, sucka!!!!

I think you need to give it a break. This is a news article related to a major airline on a message board. It was interesting to read.. Try to relax a bit. The guy simply posted a news article most of us my have missed otherwise..

Here's some homework for you Rough,

Go check the history of OYS starting threads then let us know what the percentage of those are about Southwest.

The numbers are going to be pretty telling.

Standing By.

Threating 1700+ people with their job is integrity ?

Having integrity and being (or not being) nice are not the same thing. As Southwest guys have told this board multiple times, GK and his minions are not nice. They are ruthless and ALL business. They are, however, pretty durn smart and they don't lie.

About the same as 98% of you threatening to strike. So it was ok when 98% of you were telling AirTran to take their job and shove it, but Southwest somehow threatens you? You could have gotten the same 98% the tell Gary to shove it, I'm sure he would have been frightened by your show of power. Sell the story somewhere else clown.

Looks like you guys need a hug.

I posted something that many people would probably want to read. I can see now that you may not have wanted to post it for personal reasons, but many AT guys might find it interesting. And NO, I haven't heard anything about ALPA offering 800 AT guys seats with the planes if they go away. I think they will happily move over to your seats, and enjoy it. That's great.

Godspeed!

He never actually threatened that we would lose our jobs.

To be honest, I have a lot less info than you do, but it sure seemed like the second offer from GK was intended to say that if it was turned down, things would be a lot worse for the AT folks, like perhaps they would not enjoy much of a career with SWA?. Your defending that?

Looks like you guys need a hug.

Always! And get used to it- we hug around here- just wait til herb plants one on your lips(!)

Hey look- at some point AT pilots might want to take responsibility for their role in the deal... Helps me in my life anyway-

But again- don't let OYS win and rile everybody up on old news. Nobody's gonna be a loser here- different shades of winning is all you're gonna see

That was never actually said by Gary or anyone else in senior management. It was implied, but not directly stated.

Your defending that?

Defending it? I'm neither defending it nor condemning it. It's simply a matter of how the game is played. Management has their ways of exerting leverage, and labor has our ways of exerting leverage. SWA did a very good job at exerting leverage in the ways available to them. I think we did a horrible job in exerting leverage. Therefore, SWA won. I've accepted it and moved on. Why lose sleep over something that can't be changed?

I could be wrong but it seems like you are a different person. Reading your posts now compared to before there was an agreement it just seems like maybe you are taking a different path. Could it be that you have plans on getting involved with SWAPA since you will no longer be involved with ALPA? Remember the old saying, you can take the animal out of the jungle but you cannot take the jungle out of the animal. You think like ALPA and I do not think that will change. What say you.

I know this and I love hugs. My question is why do you guys recoil with disgust and fear when I chase you down the concourse to give a hug and maybe a kiss too? What gives?, I bathe pretty regularly and I understand the importance of good dental hygiene. I just want to hug.

But you're at a Delta regional. Talk about people going above you. You'll get nothing and like it.

What is fair is fair. That is the way it should be,

I will get my turn , why would I want to see the AT pilots screwed out of what There contract has?
