ASA furloughs 80 pilots

The fact that somebody at ASA sitting in the left seat saying they can't afford 50 bucks a month is rediculous. No one is required to help out anyone, but if you won't, don't show the world how cheap you are by saying you can't afford $50.00.

So sorry if I'm cheap to you. Do you have a wife and kids, house payment, credit cards, etc etc...Sorry if you are so rich, maybe if you are so much better off than me perhaps you can pay my $50 and make everyone happy.

Many of us know it's only a matter of time before Skywest makes history on its record of "Never Furloughed." When in the history of aviation has an airline asked for reduced schedules, voluntary furloughs, part time employment, and halted indirect furloughs as a result. It hasn't. We know in 35 years of SkyWest's history it has never been "THIS BAD." Why can't we just communicate in a matter that helps not hinders morale and at minimum helps people plan their lives. If we are 500 pilots overstaffed a ballpark estimate would require 1000 pilots accepting part time employment. Not practical. With the cash reserves Skywest Inc has, 80 pilots is easily funded over the course of this recession or in contrast just the indication of a much bigger problem that CANNOT be funded furloughing "ONLY" 80 pilots.

Does ALPA do anything in the form of information for these guys and girls, I haven't seen anything from the Union. Guess they are just waking up.

Well said. Not bashing, but I am disappointed that there wasn't anything from ALPA on this coming up. Yes the writing was on the wall from what was going on with the company but nothing much from ALPA except "save your money". There wasn't anything on additional airplanes being added either, before the company announced them. However we have gotten several e-mails on the subject of PBS. It seems most resources are on that.

How would ALPA know about furloughs or new aircraft before the company announced it?

There were several connection emails I remember talking about how we were 200-300 pilots overstaffed. It doesn't take much to connect the dots...

I will personally take a very dim view of anyone picking up open time with Acey guys/gals out on the street. I dunno if this might be a ProStandards issue, or, one of simple common sense, but NO open time. Don't do it. On this subject, it is not just a matter of business; the folks out on the street are pilots. No one will take care of pilots but pilots.

I am fairly pissed right now.

Just with min guarantee, you'll see $138K a month. Once you figure in taxes and benefits, the cost goes even higher. When you start figuring in the min line costs vs having less guys with high block, the costs really get out of whack then. When you start talking a million bucks over a few months in this environment, a company does what it has to to keep money in the bank.

Well lets see, Wife, three kids, two car payments, two mortgages, credit cards and other debt, plus I have been on reserve now for 1.5 years and hve never broken 75 hours as a captain. How about you, do you and your family eat out atleast once a month? Go to a movie? Not trying to call you out, but to say you can't give 50 bucks to a guy that just lost his job is pretty pathetic. And as far as picking up open time, no you should not. Its called shared sacrafice. If the company can cover all of the flying because people are picking up open time then there is no reason to recall. If you pick up open time you should have your name on a wall and given to all the FO's on furlough. Nobody likes where we are right now, this is a new area for ASA. Lets try to show some respect to the guys that just got life altering news and atleast pretend like you are supportive.

If I were on furlough and knew someone was stabbing me in the back, I could think of a couple things.
