why not just BUY ALK and more 777's

There seems to be a very easy answer to this problem. BUY ALK for the West coast feed, then 30 more 777LR's and within a relatively short amount of time DL will have the Asia presence that they want so much.

If the only thing that NW brings to the table is the Pacific....and really their routes are dwarfed by DL's dominance of Europe, Latin America, etc...why would they want the headache? I know...a bunch of lawyers, CEO's and managers are going to get rich!

NW offers absolutely no benefit to a DL pilot in a merger. Maybe a few...VERY few MSP;DTW commuters would be ok with it....but I doubt you would get a DL MD88 FO to bid 747 FO if it meant living in one of NW domiciles!

Why do you keep lumping the 319s in with the DC9s. They are worlds apart in every respect. The 319 is a common type with the 320. They are much more efficient than a 9 or MD. I'd much rather fly a 319 than a MD88 (big DC9) and most passengers feel the same way about riding in the back. They are in no way similar to a DC-9.

This is an easy one....1 word; 3 letters.........P A Y

Relative seniority with fences. What your seniority holds now is what it should hold after the merger. Nobody is bumped from their equipment or base. No categories are rebid. Everyone's life remains the same with the NW pilots getting bigger payraises, better work rules, and both groups sharing the equity. Anything else is a windfall for one group and a sheet sandwich for the other.

I agree no one wants a sheet sandwich on either side but if you look at a NWA newbs overall accent up the seniority pole compared to a DAL newb then you will see the NWA newb has much better movement if this were to stay separate. Bottom line is hopefully this doesnt happen and if it does then both pilot groups can manage to mingle and become one he!l of a large solid pilot group.

The NWA guys are going to have to give up something to get their pay/work rules up to Delta's level.

Otherwise, why would Delta pilots go along with it? They already have better pay/work rules and don't need a merger to improve them.

So by your logic we can consider our 757s widebodied since they pay the same as the wide bodied 767-300er. That would mean that DAL brings 245 wide bodied paying aircraft to the party and NWA would be bringing 63. Interesting. I like how you think.;)

Or, by your logic, you could consider the 767 a NB category aircraft and that leaves DAL with what? 8 (Eight) widebody paying aircraft to the party. You can play this anyway you want.
It's nice and convient that you're leaving out the 68 orders/options for the 787. Also, other options with accelerated delivery dates may be granted as liquidated damages due to the late deliveries on the current order. I'm sure since this is so insignificant to even mention, the first 68 787's should be fenced for NWA guys as well.

Here's to each airline going it's own way!

NWA doesn't need a merger to improve pay/work rules. This WILL happen in the next contract. The old guys who were in the "save the retirement at all costs" have their pensions secured and most will be retired by then as they'll leave at 60. Those remaining WILL not take a sub-industry contract. We will get contract repair.

DOH w/ fences.

I'm getting really sick of the legacy unions here. They claim they want to protect the profession, but then do everything they can to cut each other off at the knees. Hypocrits. Pompous @sses. How can they gripe about the LCC's ruining the industry when they behave like this?

DING, DING, DING!!!! Finally, some insight.

What you are missing is the removal of your DC9s with no replacement on order, and your 747-200s (that you may plumb on). Our retirements mainly stopped a larger furlough, thanks to us parking planes at the same time (762s, 732s, 733s, MD11s). You are parking D93s, and later you will get rid of larger DC9s.

Maybe this deal won't happen, or maybe it will be figured out and everyone will jump up and down with glee thanks to the great deal. I hope for one of those two things to happen, no doubt.

Have you ever seen a 767-400? I guess not. It is a lot larger than a 767-300ER, and probably carries more pax than your A330s. We have 21 of them, and they certainly pay more than your A330s or future 787s. CAL also flies them.

Seen it. Rode on it. In back and up front. Nice plane. A little cramped in Biz Class but it does have 2 more of those seats than our 330's. Seats 285. NWA A330 seats 298. Pay? Yup....about 10% more...just like everything else. Hasn't that been covered before?
