Here is a press release from UPS

UPS To Provide Lift For DHL Air Express Packages in North America

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--UPS (NYSE:UPS) today announced it will work with DHL Express U.S. toward an agreement to provide transportation in its air network for all of DHL’s express, deferred and international package volume within the United States. UPS also would provide air lift for DHL packages between the United States, Canada and Mexico.

A final contract is anticipated later this year. The agreement, when finalized, would be expected to extend for 10 years and produce up to $1 billion in additional annual revenue for UPS. The company said it would begin phasing in a limited amount of volume in 2008 with ramp up in 2009.

“We believe this arrangement with DHL would represent a wise use of our assets and network capacity while creating a substantial and profitable revenue stream for our company,” said David Abney, UPS’s chief operating officer. “We plan to move forward quickly on the final contract.”

The agreement would not involve the pick-up or delivery of DHL packages to their customers, only the transport of packages, primarily between airports, in North America. As such, the work will be similar to that currently performed by UPS for the U.S. Postal Service.

UPS will be able to handle much of the anticipated new volume in its existing air network, although additional capacity will be added beginning in 2009 upon full implementation. The total amount of capacity needed will be determined at that time; however, UPS is currently scheduled to take delivery of seven new aircraft in 2008 and another five in 2009. The company is also well along on a $1 billion expansion of its UPS Worldport® air hub in Louisville, Ky.

The arrangement with UPS is part of a broader U.S. restructuring announced today by Deutsche Post World Net at a press conference in Bonn, Germany.

“We want to emphasize that this would be a relatively straightforward air lift agreement and that UPS and DHL will continue to compete in the marketplace under their own brands,” Abney added. “UPS brings to customers its own unique value proposition. By providing these services to DHL, UPS will not be diminishing its competitive position or ability to differentiate itself with customers.”

This is still going to be a major hit. Even with the diversification I hope he has charter sales working overtime to keep some of us employed... The 767 is still a viable aircraft( if we can get cargo doors in all of them). I am sure that most of us willl be gone, but some will remain. Looks like we are going towards the Atlas and Polars of the world, strictly charter contracts out of Mia and Lax and wherever else we can get business...

Looks like Joe Hete had the crystal ball and is the only one who prepared

Don't worry, I'm sure UPS will give preferential hiring to all Astar and ABX pilots like they did for the Emery and Challenge pilots.

Mmmmhhh...yeah....I've already got my brown shoes out polishing them up. Expecting my phone to ring any minute now.

I guess the domesday of 12 767's in KIX and MIA with 150 to 200 pilots turned out to be reality. At least ABX will keep the delta and AA airplanes.

Sad sad day today. I feel for everyone that will be out of work as a result of DHL screwing up so bad, myself included. :(

Wilmington Ohio will become a one horse town when they pull the plug. I wonder how DHL will pay back the state of OH and local government when they took all that $$$ and promises of jobs to the area? You know that OH will sue the pants off of them. Unlike Kitty Hawk that went into BK and left FWA high and dry, DHL is still running and did not uphold their promise to the state when they were stuffing state and local cash into their wallet.

Man, we ALL got screwed by their screw up. :angryfire

How many ABX planes are going to remain on schedule the rest of this week?

Or Astar planes? They just knocked the wind out of everyones sails on both sides. Not too many heads being held high for a while. I would like to know how ABX plans to handle this one. No hiring, people jumping ship sounds like a junior man disaster around the corner. Operations will hit a historical low for the very near future. Maybe ATI will give ABX preferred hiring for those willing to go with all the 767's. What a mess!

Good luck to all ABX and Astar guys. Why that much sh&t happens to good people?

Quite a mess indeed Shooter. It would have been bad enough if just one segment of either company had been hit in an anouncement today, but when you consider that the entire operations of BOTH sides, i.e. mechs., crew sched., loaders, etc are going to be lower than well digger's shoes and more than willing to let DHL know what they think.....well....I think you get the picture.

On a brighter note, the Anual AStar Family Picnic, car show, and aircraft static display will be this Sat. sooo everybody come on out and have a grand old time!!!!! MORONS!!!!!

As a former ABXer I would like to express my sadness at this news. All of you deserve much better than this, and I greive this irresponsible damage to a fine company and great operation.

Folks,

This just came out about an hour ago. We may be down but we’re certainly not out. Check out the entire article, but below is what Hete had to say.

Hete also noted that "ABX Air's management team, working in tandem with our other ATSG companies, is already examining alternatives for deploying our DHL aircraft with other customers, and other business options that would maximize the return on our investments and the capabilities of our employees. Those options may include services for customers in the U.S. and around the world in markets where demand for efficient, flexible air cargo and related services continues to expand."

I am sure many of the affected would love to hear some good news. However I find it quite ironic that the above link directs you to :
