Bourbon and horses?

Now that sounds like a great combo! My wife is too funny - she is already practicing to make mint julips!

I am a ups hopefull with a small medical problem. I have high blood pressure but have it under control with medication. I obviously have no problem holding a class 1 medical. Does anyone else here have any experience with the ups medical and high blood pressure?

I thought you couldn't get a 1st class if you are on BP meds. That's not the case then?

UPS Physical

Just a quick note on the UPS physical. The doctor’s office only reports one of two things to UPS...they either report you are fit to perform the duties you have applied to perform, or you are unfit.

In order for the doctor to deem you unfit, there would have find something relatively extreme…in other words, something that would preclude you from holding a class one medical.

The letter the doctor sends to you might indicate something minor such as slightly high cholesterol for example, and a recommendation on how to correct the condition (low fat diet, exercise, etc), but that information is not passed on to UPS.

Fit or unfit. That’s all.

You might be very surprised by this, but it is very common to be on bp medications and still fly. My AME definately knows about this. Along with this condition I have to perform certain blood tests every year and there must be NO side effects from the medication.

Thanks Check Essential!

Great post! That is exactly what I was wondering, and you nailed it. Thanks for the heads-up!

Congrats!

I was getting my FAA medical a few months ago and overheard a conversation an AA pilot was having with the doctor (I know, it’s not very nice to eavesdrop :) The doctor told him that almost 20% of pilots over 50 were on some kind of blood pressure and/or statin medication (cholesterol). He said the FAA wants you to get in shape first but if that don’t work or if you have hereditary factors involved they do not disapprove and in fact encourage pilots to take bp medication early on to prevent future complications. I was surprised to hear it at first but I think it makes sense in a way.

1800RVR – CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU!!!

I got a few friends at brown and they all love it, I’m sure you’ll too!

It's the same picture V1Cutt was using for a while, but his had something like "spele.nl" on the picture. That should be a good place to start your search. ;)

(Oh, and now that you've brought attention to it, it's doomed to disappear like DAS at 10/250 and Dutch and Thrust Master. Gee, thanks! :) )

Hearing test is exactly like the military (small cubical where you can hear your heart beat). I've always hated that test. But, if you can pass the military one, you should do fine with UPS. However, not sure what UPS does if you don't pass the hearing test. (not sure what their standards/limits are). Hope this helps.

Shouldn't it be the same as the FAR's say it should? I know I couldn't pass a military, civilian for that matter, hearing exam. Don't we still have a volume control? If I can't hear ATC over the captain smackin' his food, I can still turn up the volume.

I completed the physical yesterday and Check Essential is absolutely correct.

The hearing test is to set your baseline. I've got mild to moderate hearing loss and was told that that was normal in our line of work. If you pass a Class I physical, your fine. I'm assuming the test is more for company protection against false disability claims in the future.

The med tech also told me that your cholesterol level has to be in the 800-900 range to cause any concern. They will inform you first before they report to UPS. You pretty much have to be a walking heart attack. I guess when they draw blood and gravy comes out, I'd be a little worried.

One last thing, when your my age (38), you'll have the privilege of getting your cornhole checked. I was just thankful I wasn't examined by Dr. Wholefist! I don't know what was worse, getting the sphinkter poked or having to wipe up KY afterwards while the doc was still in the room chatting with you. After a beer at the airport and a glimps of a nudy mag, I was over it. I wish I would of known about that part of the exam so I could of properly prepaired.

Overall, I'm fit. Just waiting on the lab work.

Joey

Thanks, Joey!

Congrats Joey for geting the call as well! I don't even know if I congratulated you or not. :D

Thanks for the trip report, also. I feel MUCH better with the intel from you and Check Essential. So, you got the "Moon River" treatment? You should have turned around and said "Gee, doc, you using the whole fist there?" (Thanks to Chevy Chase) Something to look forward to, NOT!!!!!!! Was that an age thing, or is that standard for all ages? I'm hoping for the former...

Thanks again and congrats!

I am prepared. At my current airline, we get the "oh no, not again" treatment daily...

RVR,

Thanks for the congrats.

I'm not sure if it's an age thing for their pre-screening probe. If there are any yougins' who recently got hired, can you lean forward (so to speak) and let us know if you were violated? ==> ( ).( )

Too funny!!!

Joey,

Your post made me "crack" up!!! (no pun intended-well, maybe) :D I was starting to practice my Moon River singing until L'il J. said that he didn't get it. I think that I will be safe. We'll see.

Congrats to you too, L'il J!!!
