That 4 years for a contract argument is getting old, had we voted in ALPA during the last ALPA drive in 1999 (not the UPA drive) we would have a contract by now and better leverage for a raise in leu of the company's record profits. Instead we have SAPA reps like you crying "it will be years befor we get a contract so lets not start now".

As far as Mesa and Comair goes, how much money did Mesa make in the last year? How well managed are they? You cant get anything when the company has nothing! Its common sense negotiating that SAPA dosent seem to understand.

Comair is in another boat...their parent company is BANKRUPT and I dont see many mainline flights being built up in CVG, how do you negotiate with that?

With ASA lets wait and see what happens...Ron already said ASA may be better positioned to do the flying in the 70's out of CVG that Comair lost, even with their current yet outdated (1999) and expired contract and pay scales.

Sorry SkyNation. Your math is all jacked up. Some would get 1% more and three minutes of time an hour here and there. Some get nothing, along with four years of nothing. No raise and paying dues doesn't yield a 6% difference. Again, was this the right proposal for us all?

I don't live with my parents and I have a mortage. I am making all the bills and then some on FO pay. I also save into my retirement plan and still have a bit left over. I don't understand why guys get so angry when a guy just likes his job. I do my locals and 2-day trips and go home. I don't get all wrapped up in everything else. Life is good to me. I have a good schedule, plenty of time off, go on vacation all the time. I don't really have a care in the world at this point in time. I also admit I do not have kids at this point in time. Perhaps some day later down the road. I will wait until my fast upgrade comes for that so I can afford kids. I have been here over 2 years just waiting for the domicile of my choice. I am paying my own bills, living on my own and doing well. Some people are good with money, some are not good with money. That is what it really boils down to. As far as kids go public school is fine with me. I went through public school and did just fine. My wife also went through public school and did just fine. Both of my parents worked and both of her parents worked. You are simply trying to make things sound worse than they really are. If we do not vote in ALPA I do not see a senority integration anytime in the future. This is yet another reason not to vote for ALPA and why it probably will not pass.

I thank ALPA for all the things they have done however I still choose not to give them my money. That is my right. Until I am forced to I will not give them my money. Even when I am forced to I will still not join the union. Did you know that during a senority integration ALPA will not represent you? Thats right the MEC can force a merger fund at any time. You pay all those dues to alpa and they leave you flopping in the wind when merger time comes around. I sure will not put up with any extra forced assesment fees. You should ask a member of the OC about merger funds and see what they say. Any MEC can impose a merger fund any time they see fit. If you do not join the union you don't have to pay the assesments they force on the pilot group.

How exactly is making a livable wage cheapening the profession? Every pilot group negociates their own contract. It has been done this way since flying has started. I am not the keeper of the flame. It is not my job to make more money than everyone else. It is my job to goto work, do my job and go home. I do not care about anything else if I can be quite frank. I do just fine and I don't need someone else telling me what I should be making. I can decide that for myself. If the vote passes then that means the majority has decided what is a livable wage. Also if ALPA is voted down it means we do not need nor want their help. It is all about what the majority wants. If the above happens then it is proof you are just the angry/vocal minority.

Went straight from the classroom to aviaton. Never felt the need to do that other stuff. If you did that is great however I don't need to do that blue collar stuff to realize the real world. No sir I am living in the real world now. Have a mortage, paying the bills and still have the money to play. I am sure you hate it to hear that but its the truth. It sure is great being based in a place where housing costs are still kinda low.

Tell you what I will vote in ALPA if they can set it up so the people who want to don't have to pay dues. Either way I have no problem being carried around if you feel the need to. Like "OO" said. We all don't live out in BFE. We also have kids we send to school. I contribute both time and money to my kids schools that test as the best in the district. Out here in California your 200k house will buy you a place with empty 40's in the yard every morning and the sound of gunshots at night. I work this job, my business, and my wife has two businesses. I guess we're good with money too. We drive old cars that I can repair, buy the kids books, educational toys, and take them on trips to learn about the world around them. I guess we're all supposed to live next door to you and commute. Five days a week away from the wife and kids isn't what I'm going to do.

Reality says this pay proposal ignores hundreds of your fellow pilots and is a pitance to compensate those who made a 18 month agreement to the company. Take 153million in profits and divide by 2500 pilots. Divide that by 12 months. Divide that by 120 hours in a month credit. Looks like the company profited $42.57/credit hour per pilot. You must be proud of that 35 cents and the fact that you will get 0.82% of the companies profit as a reward for voting yes! They will keep 99 cents on the dollar and be done talking to you. I really like SkyWest!. I never applied to another airline as I had followed them for years before I ever set foot in the door. Without a doubt the best run regional bar none, with a brilliant managment team. I enjoy working there and have nothing but good things to say about the people there. But, I do think managment can easily stand to reward the pilot groups with more than what has been offered, and fix some things for those folks who worked to help make it all happen. I'm not an accountant so someone explain it to me.

I split the bill with my parents to be honest. I paid about half and they paid about half. I freely admit I lived at home throughout college. I also worked a lot of odd jobs to raise the money that I needed. I was assistant manager at a store, worked a restaurant, worked customer service, worked the ramp for a few months. I was able to make/save enough money to pay as I went. I ended up debt free out of college. That saves me a lot of money right there. I have no money at all going toward student loans.

I wouldn't say I have a blase attitude. I just freely admit that life is good to me and I enjoy what I do. I also think I do pretty well for myself. I worked plenty of jobs through college and this job pays better than all of them. Especially for the captains. You do have to subtract first year pay of course. First year pay is pretty much bad everywhere though. You have to live for the moment. You can't always live in fear of the future you just have to live to today and see what tomorrow brings.

Thanks for trying to talk some sense into Newman, I've tried too but just haven't been able to get reality through his thick skull... Maybe NewPoo and SkyNation just don't have to deal with the ever rising costs of inflation with their SkyWest paychecks because mommy and daddy keep raising their allowance?

I have lived on my own quite a while now. No more allowance for me, except the sweet check I get from skywest twice a month of course. That is plenty of allowance for me. Cost of living and inflation is going up everywhere. A lot of jobs do not have COLA and don't have raises for years at a time. Even with inflation where it is I still get by just fine. Admittedly I have no children. When I make Captain pay however I will also be able to afford children. I know the vocal minority want to convince me how bad I have it. I will not fall for that. I do not want to turn into a sour grapes person.

Well, that explains everything. No curiosity, no imagination, no big picture, no prospective on life whatsoever.

Let me ask you, since you're living the dream as a single guy and a pilot, how many trips have you taken since you've had your travel benefits? (and I'm not talking about Vegas), I mean how many countries have you explored? how many week-ends to Rome or Tokyo, how many stamps in your passport?

I have been to europe once and Mexico a few times for vacation. I admit I hate to non-rev. I hate dealing with the loads, security, etc. Basically the airport is the last place I want to go on my days off. I go on plenty of trips but I also like enjoying my days off at home. I have been on many adventures throughout the US. I will eventually go to other places for now however I like to enjoy my days off here at home. We are going on a trip to the east coast soon. Boston, DC, Manhattan. My Passport does not have many stamps yet but the night is still young. Plenty of time to explore asia/europe later.

If I had worked the construction jobs, etc I would still have the same attitude. we get paid pretty well for what we do. The raise we get will help even more. It would be nice to get COLA,etc however sometimes these things just are not realistic. I know people love to point to the profits. The margin is pretty thin and there really isn't as much wiggle room as you thing. The margin keeps shrinking. This fee per departure gig sucks. If we were making our own money like that I would say a large raise would be warranted. Unfortunately we are at the mercy of the majors we work for.

I'm almost 40, a career changer, 3rd airline. My wife and I worked to pay for my flight training/pay off debt from my undergrad. I got zero help from parents, but I did get some grants/scholarships. We have children, and she no longer works. I live in SLC, which I know is cheap compared to LA or NY but our home is valued at over $400,000. Our mortgage is our only debt, because we've been diligent to avoid debt and pay it off. We get no help from parents or friends, it's just us. I have a great life, really enjoy my job, and am optimistic about the future.

The margin isn't thin. You just don't pay attention when Brad Rich explains why the margin APPEARS thin to the investment community. Let me explain it to you.

SkyWest gets reimbursed for fuel by the customers (UAL and DAL).
Airplanes require lots of fuel. Your captain is doing his best to use as little of it as he can but it still takes a lot for those GE fans to keep spinning.
The price of fuel has gone up a lot lately. Reference Bush's invasion of Iraq and instability in the mideast.

When SkyWest gets reimbursed for the fuel it has to recognize that money as REVENUE. Reference GAAP (generally accepted accounting principals)

That revenue is a direct pass-through cost. SkyWest cannot mark up the cost of fuel to the customers. Thus the more fuel costs the more SkyWest profits are diluted.

If you take away the fuel cost reimbursement you'll see a healthy profit margin in the low teens. Jerry, Ron, and Brad are thankful that the pilot ranks are infected with ignorant mother-********************ahs like you who believe the sky is falling. You need to allocate a few hours a quarter to read or listen to the quarterly investor conference calls and educate yourself. Noone is going to do that for you.
