For casual vittles try "The shack" in enchanted lakes

For a good steak there is a restaurant across from Kailua beach park. Its been about 11 years since I lived there so I can't remember the name but I can still taste the steak. If you know the name of it, let me know its killing me.

Awesome burgers at both of "The Shack"s! (there's one in Hawaii Kai, too) I think the steak place you are talking about in Kailua is Buzz's-also one of my favorites, but I like the one in Pearl City better just cuz it has a cool view of Pearl Harbor, I've also had a lot of fun in that parking lot, but that's another story.... Does anyone remember the days when the "Pirate Bully Hays" was open just around the corner? That was a fun spot!!!

BAR-B-QUE!!!!

Did I mention I like barbeque? :D

I was on a trip the other day:

In Tulsa: Stutt's barbeque on Apache avenue. You might want to bring smoke goggles for all of the hickory smoke in the place, but $8.95 bought a POUND of ribs with LOTS of meat. MMMMM.

In San Antonio: Casey's barbeque, just five minutes from the airport. Million Air will take you if you are not flying for an airline and use their ramp. Almost as good as Stutt's.

Going to KC? the Majestic has the hands down BEST smoked beef tenderloin sandwich you will ever taste. On the Missouri side, about ten minutes drive from Beechcraft Aviation (KC Downtown).

FDJ,

You realize that some of these restaurants pay their employees less than the industry standard wages, this is causing downward pressure on the salaries of chefs at the larger more established resturants. Why even the guy who makes the salad tableside at mortons may lose his job to the wendy's salad bar. And just think about the whipsaw effect the fine dining has on the fast food industry. Look how fast the smaller resturants are growing taking business away from the larger more established restaurants. The grill man at sizzler does the same job as the grill man at ruth chris and he is paid far less and receives less benefits. The only answer is we must all eat at a fine resturant every night of our lives. I, for one cannot allow this to continue. Before you know it there will be a fast food resturant on every.... er um corner. See its already happening! :D

Almost forgot.

In San Antonio: Texas Land and Cattle, on US 410. I had the smoked chicken and ribs combo.

Tonto say good food, kimosabe.

Gee Fletch,

Are you comparing Delta to Morton's and Airtran to Wendy's? You should give yourself more credit. If I had made that comparison, you guys would have killed me!

Anyway, I enjoyed the joke, but I need more restaurants! I'm determined not to get into any arguments on this thread. Let me hear 'em.

In KC gotta eat fried chicken at Strouds. Hole in the wall place & the last time I was there had an old black guy playing boogie-woogie piano in the back. Great atmosphere. Golden Ox is great, too.
For ribs, on the west side of St. Louis, near SUS, try Annie Gunns-ummm. If you really want to hurt yourself eating try Lamberts in Springfield/Branson. Home cooking, good ribs, too. More food than a sumo wrestler could eat.
In ABQ gotta have the carne adovada at Sadies, but you'll hate yourself the next morning! Also go up to the crest on the tram for drinks. At 10k you get a lot more bang for the buck.
For a great steak in CLT try Sullivan's in the Southend.
For seafood it's gotta be Betty Jean's at SSI. Absolutely the best I've ever had.
Um, think I'll go eat now.

Love this post. If I remember one of these places on a trip, it will have been worth it.

San Antonio -

The absolute best burgers I have ever had are at a tacky texas dive named "The Longhorn Cafe." When I was based there, we (the whole crew) had to go there once a week. Now being based in CVG, I am debating going to SAT just to go back to the Longhorn for dinner.

Great mexican at (a chain resturant) the Alamo Cafe. The fajitas are great. Never walked out of there less than uncomfortably full and it is pretty close to the airport.

BBQ at Caseys was good too. Breakfast burritos with a beer (or two or three) was great. Oh for the glory days of flying night cargo.

And I'll second Michlebobs in Naples. Really good ribs.

How can everyone here mention great eating without mentioning New Orleans? We are the food capital of the U.S. I can't even start to mention any names, but the French Quarter is full of fabulous restaurants.

awww yeahhhh...

good food. nothing makes a trip better than good food. ask any pilot about his trip and if he had good food at his destination, that is all he will be talking about. not 'yeah was great but that passenger was a twink..' oh no...he will say 'oh it was a great flight. we had this awesome steak at...'

MKC/MCI-yeah people have mentioned the Golden-OX. incredible strip steak. almost ordered another one after finishing the first. but people do forget about 'The Herford House'. also incredible.

STL/SUS-south a ways you get to Lamberts. 'home of the throwed rolls' just hold your hand up and catch a roll thats thrown to you. its no puny roll either its a big puffy hot roll. softball sized. If you call them and tell them youre a pilot and flew in to eat there, they will pick you up and put you in front of the line so you can get in and out faster. theres another one just like it south of...

SGF-springfield. yeah another lamberts here too. its also a bit south of town. same thing. you dont get up. they walk around with big pots of food and give you however much you want. just be careful you dont fall asleep driving back to the airport. and looses your belt two notches.

one of my fav places...Terre Haute IN.-Big Shoe's BBQ. its built around a big brick cooking pit. theres a reason all the best BBQ comes from a condemmned building. just make sure youre not 6'5" when entering this place. the hot is pretty hot.

any KC people here know if Brownie's is still open? south of KC at miami valley apt. great stuff. was there last in 95' i think. the owner then just got lou gherigs. i really hope its still open.

Kingair,

You are right, MSY food ROCKS. I used to love the old employee cafeteria in the airport, but I don't think it's open anymore. Those cajuns working on the ramp wouldn't stand for crappy food! Also, I used to love flying the JFK - MSY - MEX flight for TWA. The best part (well, 10 cent beers at Dino's was pretty good too) was MSY. We only had about a half hour, so one of us would preflight and the other run to Jester's in the terminal and get two orders of red beans and rice with sausage and cornbread. We'd eat like kings on the way to MEX!

Airpirate,

Your places sound great, except for that Golden Ox. You said you almost ordered another steak after finishing the first? Sorry, but that does not sound like a place for me. I don't like a steakhouse if I don't have to unbuckle my pants at the table and put my head down and sleep until I have recovered enough to leave the restaurant! If you feel like you can eat another, well, they just didn't give you enough the first time! That's a sin in my book!

Anyway, I appreciate all the suggestions. I really am going to print these out and keep them in my flightbag. I can't wait to try these places!

Going to Naples tomorrow and going to try Michaelbob's. I'll give a report when I get back.

BIG Texan

yep, AMA has that monstahh steak called "the big texan"...the deal is you give up $50 bones up front, and then you have to finish the 72oz steak, dinner roll, scrimp cocktail, baked potato, and dinner salad within one hour to get your money back.

ground rules

(1) pay first

(2) sit on raised platform in middle of joint so all can bet on the impending outcome (they leave busboy tray at your feet in case you hurl)

(3) steak is brought out, you cut it in fourths and sample one bite. if's its made to your liking, then the next bite of anything on plate hacks the clock and the fight is on.

i actually finished the "meal" back in 97'....back then the record was as follows:

oldest -- 68 yr old grandmom -- low 40s for time !

youngest -- 12 yr old "jethro bodine" lookalike who inhaled it in low 30s !!

worth the try, i didn't have to eat for the following 2 days...

No dessert? What a ripoff! Seriously, that gave me a stomach ache just thinking about it.

Incedently, the Palm for steaks. All of them are good.

All many may well know, not all steaks are created equal... Select, Choice, Choice Angus, and Prime being the one's I know, and I only like the later two...

So what grade of steak is this monster?

Hugh Jorgan.. you disappoint me! ;)

You didn't mention Shorebird Grill in Waikiki. You cook your own steak, all you can eat salad bar. The setup is similar to Duke's, and they give 20% off to airline crews. Can't beat that.

Monstahhh

BM and V7,

actually, when/if you sucessfully finish, they do offer you a chance to write a qoute on the "leader board" and a dessert of your choice...

the "bodine" boy wrote "nice snack !"....

i opted for some coffee vs. the dessert since i still had some driving to do...didn't last long, i was in serious food coma in ~ 2 hours and snoozing in hotel !!

as for quality....a lot better than i expected...it's a sirloin with a huge center section w/ about a 2" outer ring surrounding that ....not much grissle (sp?)...

they actually have a "fat checker" dude who makes sure that it's only skin left from baked potato and no decent meat left on the scarp plate !

HERFORD HOUSE in Kansas City. I hear Oklahoma Joes is a great spot in KC as well.

ATL & ADS -Fog de Chao

Capt601 [/B]

Right next door to Fogo in ADS is Tokyo One, GREAT sushi go for lunch, all you can eat buffett, real live non English speaking sushi chefs behind the counter. Absolute tops for Japanese waitresses......

Across the street is Ghengis Grill, all you can eat Mongolian BBQ, mmmmmmmm (Ghengis is a chain with locations all through the Metroplex)

Food....

Hey guys,

Late to the thread...but I'll chip in with some remarks...

Russ, I've been to that place you mentioned...I think it is called The Flying Beaver...

TPA - Grew up there, so i can attest to Bern's Steak House....awesome!

SAT - Texas Steak House, and Alamo Cafe are very good. Alamo Cafe is also very reasonably priced...but DON'T leave the tortilla's out for more then a couple of days! Also, Pappaduex's (sp?) is really good Cajun food.

MEM - Mmmmm...Corky's BBQ...

Actually, how about some hole in the wall places...or even FBOs that feed you...

ARA - Pelican Aviation...great food...esp Crawdad wednesdays (I think)...and Jambalya on Friday's...

EFD - PETES BBQ just outside the gate...decent food...also full of NASA stuff (Astronaut hangout)...

ABI - Harold's BBQ...or Harlows (other side of town). Harlows has lots of old flying stuff as well...

I'll think of more after I finish dinner...:)

FastCargo

FBO Grub

How bout CWF....

great crawfish etoufee year round ...during normal hours order off menu from 100 out and they'll have it ready for ya before ya land...

not to mention big leather recliners in front of large t.v. with ESPN...free dessert outta the fridge.....zzzzzzzz..snort...zzzzzzzzzz....oops, fell asleep just thinking about it ...

Just got back from Naples with my wife. Tried Michaelbob's. While she thought it was pretty good, I was really disappointed. The ribs were OK, but FAR from the best in the country! I do appreciate the suggestion, however.

We did try a steakhouse called Cloyd's and it was great. The porterhouse was a little small for my liking (only 26 oz), but it was delicious, and the lobster bisque was probably the best soup I have ever had.

Also, a restaurant named Vergina's on 5th avenue was great if you like Italian food.

Enjoy

Forgot one in BOS.

If you have a few hour airport sit, I HIGHLY suggest going to Santarpaio's Pizza. It is fantastic, and close to the airport. Take an airport bus to the "T" (subway) stop, but don't go in. Walk down the stairs and continue straight ahead to the first intersection. Make a right (go over a bridge) and it's about two blocks down on your left. It is kind of a hole in the wall, but I am a firm believer that the worse a place looks on the outside, the better the food is inside.

It's worth the trip, and kills some time. Certainly beats hanging out in the airport.

If you get lost, ask anyone. Every airport worker knows it.

It's great pizza, and the owner is very into boxing, so the old boxing posters on the wall add to the experience.

Enjoy, and keep em coming!
Hey FDJ, I grew up on the West side of Boston and every once and a while my boys and I would drive the 45 minutes across the city and through the tunnel (the toll was only a buck in those days) just to go to Santarpaios (not sure if this is the correct spelling). There are tons of good pizza places on my side of town but non as good as this place. Man this is making me hungery for a good slice. I live in Charlotte now and you cant find a decent pizza down here! (ugh) (nothing but crappy chains)mad: -Bean

FDJ, I have to agree it's been a few years since I ate at Michaelbob's, but I too was disappointed. Sure they're good ribs, but nothing special. The Luther's chain has better ribs.

My vote for best ribs is Rendevous in MEM!

food

In ATL, it has to be Mortons down by leniox square then after that head down to buck head and look for a bar called chaouas (sp) nice ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

They have Mortons in a lot of places, I think that over all they are a great product, but at a top price... there are other Prime Steak houses that have same quality for about 1/2 the price..

Another Couple of fine eateries.

To refresh Bobbysamd's memory: The BBQ place that I recommend in DEN is called M&D's Cafe. It's around Downing St. and 32nd I believe. If money is no object and you truly love Italian food, try the Barolo Grill in Cherry Creek near downtown DEN. You will spend $65-120 for 2 people for a simple to a full course dinner with drinks but it is worth it.

My wife is from KC and she says if you like "real" KC style BBQ try Arthur Bryant's (take off your hubcaps and leave the radio at home) on 18th & Brooklyn. Also, try nearby Ruby's Soul Food if that is your sort of thing. Stroud's (highly recommended) was mentioned earlier for fried chicken but also try their pork chops. Definitely try the Golden Ox (steak) near the stock yards.

In Fort Wayne, IN go to Oley's for pizza. Best deep dish anywhere. Also try the shrimp and garlic pizza on cornbread crust at the Munchie Emporium.

MKE has a plethora of good restaurants. For steak try the Prime Quarter. Really close to the airport on Layton Ave. You get to choose your own cut of meat (more than just steak) and grill it yourself over large charcoal pits. The best "fast food" burgers come from Kopp's frozen custard stand. Mader's on Old World 3rd St. has fantastic German food.

Speaking as a Wisconsin native, I know good beer and you can't go to "Beer Town" and not sample some of the local froth. Try microbrews such as Sprecher, Lakefront Brewery, and Cream City Brewery.

Speaking of good microbrews, if you are in the CLE area try a Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold.... mmmmm.... so thirsty.....

Another BBQ note: some of the best ribs I have eaten are at the Tumbleweed Southwest Grill. They have locations in WI, IL, IN, OH, and KY. On Wednesdays they have all you can eat ribs. They are always tender and the meat all but falls off of the bones. Red Hot and Blue is another good BBQ chain for Memphis style BBQ. I have been to their locations from D.C. to Colorado Springs.

You guys that have been to ABQ probably know about Quarter's BBQ on Yale Ave. and also the Route 66 Diner on Central. Little Anita's in Old Town ABQ has fantastic Mexican and New Mexican food.

Okay, I have to stop typing now. I am making myself hungry.

Enjoy,
Skyking
