Restaurants and Steakhouses

I LOVE to eat. Love it! One of the best things about being a pilot is trying good restaurants all over the world. Something was said about steakhouses on another thread which gave me an idea.

We should share where the best restaurants are around the country. It will make me hungry, but give me one more thing to look forward to when I get back.

I'll start with just a few off the top of my head

Heck of an idea!

FDJ has a heck of an idea. I also think one of the best things about this line of work is hunting great restaurants, and I'll add a few to the list.

Orlando: Charley's is the steak spot. Linda's La Cantina on Colonial is another decent steak place. Go to Straub's on Colonial for excellent seafood.

Daytona Beach: Try the Chart House or Park's for good seafood. Also very good is Sweetwater's in Port Orange ... right on the Intracoastal.

Raleigh: Angus Barn ... on US 70 right near the north end of RDU.

Lexington: deSha's is right downtown, pretty good American fare.

Louisville: Fifth Quarter Steakhouse is near SDF and good.

Charlotte: Many wonderful restaurants Uptown. Palomino and the Capitol Grille are excellent.

Memphis: Eat some barbecue ... Corky's on Poplar is a great spot, and there's the Rendezvous ... legendary rib dive downtown.

Dallas/Fort Worth: Uncle Julio's has good Mexican. Pappadeaux for some great seafood. The Old San Francisco Steakhouse on Stemmons at Walnut Hill has good steaks and a girl in period costume on a giant swing every hour .. entertaining. Texas Land & Cattle is a chain in the area and has pretty good steaks ... Outback-like prices but a more "local" feel inside.

Houston: There's a place on the North Freeway not too far from IAH called the Atchafalaya River Cafe that had good Cajun food once upon a time ... don't know if it still does or not.

Buffalo: Anchor Bar & Grill ... if you're going to eat Buffalo wings, go to the place that invented them.

Naples, FL: Michelbob's claims to have the "best ribs in America" ... while I don't know if that's true, the chow is pretty good.

If you don't mind chains, PF Chang's has delicious and very inventive Chinese cuisine and locations in many major cities.

"Mortons of Chicago" is a great upper scale steak place. I've been to the one in Kansas City. It is better than Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, and I think Ruth's is fantastic.

Its down in the city, and the airport is well north of the city so you'll need a ride.

SAV: The Lady and Son's or Mrs Wilkes (tie) The 2 best Southern cookin' places I've tried both happen to be in the same city.

ELP: Forti's (Mexican) Best Pastel de Tres Leches I've had anywhere, including in Mexico.

You are correct, 717, Morton's is another great steakhouse, especially for a chain.

Russ, GREAT job. I am going to be doing searches for this thread when I go back, I can promise you that!

My wife and I are going to Naples this week, I appreciate the Michaelbob's suggestion. I will be sure to try it out. Does anyone know of any others in Naples?

I have made plenty of trips to Michelbobs' in Naples while building time and just for fun. The Barbeque Plater for 2 is a ton of food.

DAYTON, OHIO: The Buckhorn (Ribs)

Toledo, OHIO: The Whitehouse (Prime Rib)

Opa Locka Airport: Shula's in Miami Lakes (Original)

Seattle: Jak's.

Better than Ruth's Chris. Better than Morton's. Better than The Metropolitan Grill (another good Seattle restaurant).

The only downside to Jak's is that they don't take reservations and the wait can sometimes be measured in hours.

Maybe some former TWA guys can jump in. The hotel we used to stay in ABQ had a great bbq place across the street. I think it was called Ruby's or Rosie's. Anyone remember?

How about KC Masterpiece in St. Louis and Kansas City. Awesome BBQ!!!!

If you like sushi... Todai buffet in LAS is great.

KC Masterpiece is great, also try SmokeStack BBQ, and Smokehouse BBQ.

If you like music, on the southside of Kansas City is BB's Lawnside BBQ that has live jazz and blues bands. I' love music, I've played guitar for years, and I gotta say, these bands absolutely rock, the beer is REAL cold, and the food... great.

It's in the Aladdin... On the south side of the hotel. I think it's $16 for lunch and $23 for dinner. You can get a coupon in the friday weekend section of the review journal. They have all types of sushi, sashimi, and hand rolls. Sometimes they have lobster.

If you want ok sushi, a place called Buffet @ Asia opened up on the corner of rainbow and sahara. Dinner is 9.99 (12.99 Fri&Sat), and is not bad. Great chinese food at this place!!

Since I moved here, I've been exploring all the resteraunts!!!

If you have a few hour airport sit, I HIGHLY suggest going to Santarpaio's Pizza. It is fantastic, and close to the airport. Take an airport bus to the "T" (subway) stop, but don't go in. Walk down the stairs and continue straight ahead to the first intersection. Make a right (go over a bridge) and it's about two blocks down on your left. It is kind of a hole in the wall, but I am a firm believer that the worse a place looks on the outside, the better the food is inside.

It's worth the trip, and kills some time. Certainly beats hanging out in the airport.

If you get lost, ask anyone. Every airport worker knows it.

It's great pizza, and the owner is very into boxing, so the old boxing posters on the wall add to the experience.

Steak House: Golden Ox in Kansas City. Located near the stadium. Kinda old and funky but the best steak I have ever had. While your in that neighborhood you can check out the Save A Connie museum, and/or see the Chiefs play if you are so inclined.

Fly DeltasJets: you're thinking about Rudy's BBQ on Carlisle (there are a bunch o hotels there too).

It certaintly is good, but in ABQ... The Frontier is not steak, but who wants that when you can have Green Chile Stew? And the sweet rolls.... Open 24 hours, right by UNM, cheap... Frontier is where it's at.

But for BBQ in ABQ, Powdrells kicks the crap outta Rudys. But who eats steak in ABQ? Not me (but I live there)!

DEN and elsewhere food ideas

BBQ: Bennett's, two locations, one is just a mile from APA.

Another idea is Brothers' BBQ on Monaco off Leetsdale Drive. There's a Brothers off I-25, not far from APA.

Our poster Skyking1976 knows a BBQ restaurant that is more toward the inner city of Denver. I don't remember the name at the moment.

The other is in Westminster or something, not all that far from BJC.

Sushi: Sonoda's, on Parker Road, about a mile west of I-225, is not that far away from DEN.

Someone mentioned a sushi restaurant in LAS on the Strip. I recall eating at one in the Flamingo Hilton that was good.

I second Durgin Park in Boston. We were with family and ate there four years ago. Excellent!!

Finally, in VRB, although some will disagree, is Taste of Italy for Italian. Vincent's is also good, and makes good pizza. Fat Boy's BBQ on U.S. 1 is good.

The flying beaver (no it isnt, but there is a great one of those there also) Not a culinery giant like the others listed here but a great place place to spend a few hours. Micro brewery beer and the type of food that you usually find there. The draw is that its on a lake that has lots of sea plane activity. The terminal if you want to call it that is in the same building as the restaurant. See everything from singles to twin otters on floats over the course of dinner. Can't say for a fact but I understand one of the flying services adjecent to the restaurant provides space available tourist flights to airline guys. Got to be sober for it, which has eliminated me.

This is a great thread. Perhaps the mod could start a permanent one. My company online BB has a section devoted to things to do at each overnight. That way you know where to go when you roll in to town instead of just sitting around the hotel.

TPA- BURN'S STEAKHOUSE- - - great food and what a wine list- lotsa history behind this plae. A must if in the TPA area.

Ruth's is also good in TPA as well as the Cheesecake Factory at the International Plaza. Blue Martini next door has nice "scenary" on the weekends... (

IND- Loon Lake Lodge- if you like wild game then this is the place by far.. Big airplane on the roof that one cannot miss.

SAN- George's on the Rooftop in La Jolla, awesome seafood and a view that cannot ever be forgotten. Words don't do justice to this place.

JFK- Don Peppe's in Queens. Best Italian food I have ever eaten. World famous and most celebs get their catering from here when in the NY area. Port Authority will give you a ride when you fly into JFK. A MUST "if" you like great Italian food.

HOU & IAH - America's.- great food right by the Galleria.

MSP- Planet Hollywood at Mall of America- horrible food BUT sexy females that make it worth a lunch time visit.

LAS- Picasso in the Bellagio- very very nice place with great food and a nice view of the water show at night.. Also, restaurant atop the Stratosphere is also pretty good.
