They need to just get this story out of the f_cking media. You know. Really, the amount of bull$hit we have had to put up with in this industry for the past few years is nothing short of outrageous. Ok, they were on their laptops and were distracted, let me hear of one pilot on here who wasn't easily distracted by something non aviation related while flying. OK, these guys took it to another level, but overshooting airports, landing at wrong airports, landing on taxiways instead of runways, as egregious as these sound they have all happened. All that's required is being human and in the cockpit. It happens. How many thousands of hours, flights, and hundreds of thousands of passengers have these guys safely transported from point A to point B? I swear I would be so f_cking uncooperative it isn't funny. This is really troubling. Let them even think about putting cameras in the cockpit. I hope ALPA really pulls out all the guns to protect these guys.

The new reg will be no personal items allowed on the flight deck. All overnight bags, computers, etc will be required to be in the passengers overhead compartments or carried as checked bags. The we will see increased instances of crews falling asleep because there is nothing to do on a long flight but stare out the windows. Also more instances of theft of crew members items. Just ask the F/As who have to keep their bags in the overheads how often stuff gets stolen.

With wifi on aircraft, there WAS a case to actually let pilots log on and check W/X. I don't know what those guys were doing. But they just screwed ALL of us.

Really? 20,000 hours and you can't walk and chew gum at the same time? If computers just aren't your thing then maybe the flight deck isn't the place (time) for you to engross yourself with some new program.

It's strange. There will be a lot of talk about professionalism and safety. To me there is nothing worse (unsafe/fatigue) than doing a trans-con or worse redeye tran-con, in the dark staring at the clock and progress page. Some light, a crossword/suduko, something to read, or gasp, even an occasional web surf, goes along way with keeping the mind alert. The FAA and the airlines have done wonders to make this job suck over the last twenty years...lets be sure to chip in and make it harder on ourselves as well. To say nothing of knowing what our own personal limits are.
