Becoming a Nurse

I am thinking about becoming a Registered Nurse. Are there any nurses roaming here that could recommend a school in the Cinicinnati area. I am not looking for an online program, but an accredited school to attend.

Considering the situation of airline industry, can't say I blame you for getting out.
Becoming a nurse would be a good decision (if you like that type of work).. Talk about job security!! My sister is a nurse and hardly a week goes by, she doesn't get at least one or two different job offers. Pay is pretty good, flexible hours, and good benefits (her medical is outstanding and hardly cost anything!!).

Nurses bring home more than Doctors right away, because Doc's have to pay for their own insurance.
My wife made more in sign on bonuses than I did at year one at the regional I fly for. BONUSES!!!
In our industry, the only one getting bonuses are the CEO's.

my mom has been a nurse for 38 years, almost all of it full time and in the ICU. It is a tuff thankless job. the past few years I've really seen her slow down, I have no doubt it is from the job.

from time to time over the years I've seen her at work and know I'd last about 3 minutes as a nurse. If you haven't done any work of this type before I'd suggest maybe volunteering at a hospital or ambulance crew before you shell out $$. Also, from what I know on the subject, an RN is now a 4 year degree not 2 years like in the past. But if you decide to do it (from what my mom tells me) do the RN not the LPN.

I think you're talking about a BSN.
ASN two year degree at Community College.

University Bridge program will take you to BSN (if you desire the degree).

Either degree gets you a ticket to take the boards to be registered nurse.

A male friend of mine who has a BA has been working towards his nursing degree. He'll start with $85-90K depending on the specialty he goes into.

LPN is only a 1 year course, and RN is 2 years. There isn't really a demand for LPNs, the only reason I would think to get one would be to get into the RN program faster. Most schools have a 2 year wait for the RN program, but LPN might have no wait. If you have your LPN and are transferring to RN, you normally get to bypass the wait.

Not entirely true. At one time most RN programs were ASN, and could be done in 2 years. The BSN was just for those that wanted to move up into adminstration or nursing education programs.

Its gradually moved more towards BSN programs and there are a lot less ASN than there used to be, but there are still some out there, and one can still take RN boards with an ASN.

For someone who just wants to be an RN and doesnt care about being head nurse, stuff like that, ASN is perfectly fine. My mom is an ICU/CCU nurse, and just made 100,000 this year.

also I see some of you guys have posted big $$$ salaries, I've been told you can make that but you have to be will to be basically a "whore". You have to be available to travel and cover several hospitals and the 100K jobs you are a contractor with no benefits, you provide your own. It's kind of like you can make 100K+ as a commuter/regional pilot but you need to pick up open time and work your a$$ to do it.

After 38 years (28 at the same hospital), on a 3 day/week sked, 12 hour days, 36hr paid at 40/week, (considered full time at her hospital) her salary is 65K.

Actually my mom does not have to do that at a all, just a standard alternating 3 or 4 days each week at same hospital in north Texas, as am employee and not a contractor.

The most generic family practice doctors should be earning at least $120,000 - $140,000/yr. in most markets...though I know of one who lacks ambition who is closer to $85,000/yr. Depending on speciality, doctors with more training can easily exceed $250k/yr. Cardiologists are capable of pulling down well over $500k/yr. - after malpractice insurance.

My wife is a RN and she makes about 54k working 3 12 hour days. She could've gone to one hospital and made 18k as a bonus, but usually those are given out for not so easy to fill positions. She works in ICU now and likes it. She has a 4 year degree in nursing and it has made our lives somewhat stable. Think long and hard my friend. She told me the other day she had some guy ******************** his pants in one of the beds and it was runny and watery all over the bed, him, everything. Guess who got to clean it up. If you find taking care of people rewarding, it can be a great job. If you're in it just for the money, you'll be looking for other work pronto. Good luck!

Not true at all.
My wife signed a contract to work weekends only for the next 6 months. She works Sat-Sun only. Her $52/hour was bumped up to $62/hr. Even though she's on the clock for 24 hours that weekend, she still gets paid 40 hours per week. She can pick up open shifts all week long if she wants. She gets full bennies.

When she was a traveling nurse, she was making much more money since they offer out bonuses galore because they're so short staffed.
Traveling nurses make bank as well.

One time you will do mouth to mouth on someone who will have HIV, Hepatitis A,B,or C, Tuberculosis, or MRSA. Someone will try and sue you. You will go to court. You will work 8, 10, 12, or 16 hour shifts. You will work your a$$ off. The pay is not that great. There demand will always be high for RN's because people will always be sick and RN's leave the profession everyday. If we go to a National Health Care Plan the job will suck even more.( God I hope we don't)

You might be able to do the RN course work online but there will most likely be practical requirements, working an ICU, ER, etc. Usually you have to be sponsored by a program to be able to do these. In the NY program I am familiar with, one of the requirements was you had to do a full anatomy course with a cadaver. I'm sure it differs state to state.

In Cincinnati look into Gateway in NKY and Galen and Christ Hopsital and Good Sam. Hospital both have Nursing programs - all are 2 year programs. After you get the 2 year program completed and pass the boards you are an RN and can work towards your BSN RN online as you work if you want to.

Yes I understand this. As well know that lots of people are not cut out for this type of work. I believe that I am up for it though. I am not one of those people that gets sick when they see someone else get sick and I've been somewhat of a medical experiment myself over the years.

Yes I understand this. As well know that lots of people are not cut out for this type of work. I believe that I am up for it though. I am not one of those people that gets sick when they see someone else get sick and I've been somewhat of a medical experiment myself over the years.

One of the biggest myths of nurses is all they do is change bed pans and all that fun stuff.
There are so many different fields that a nurse can go into and never see that crap.
The area I'm interested in is the psych ward. I've already worked in one as a mental health counselor and you get to see all the interesting stuff.....including watching kids paint their bodies in what we called "War Paint" then when they were done, they would eat the remains of their "war paint".....oh yeah, war paint is thier own feces.
