Several years ago, I was of the opinion that the regional airlines would eventually be absorbed by their mainline partners. However the more I look at it, and the more I think about it, I highly doubt this to be true. Even if this were to occur, by the time it did, most of the pilots will have already made the move, and those that stayed at a regional would find themselves being absorbed to the bottom of a VERY long list. In short- much better to just get out at the first opportunity, long before this scenario becomes an option.
Truthfully, I think the major airlines will eventually have to absorb the 76 seat flying, in order to cover this market. It is my opinion, that in order to attract pilots, there will have to be a mainline carrot. I feel that the majors will look long and hard at hiring their own pilots to fill these vacancies, as the 76 seaters come off contract with their regional partners. We will see which airline does this first, but I'm convinced the days of the large RJ's at regional partners is growing darker by the year.
