I injured my back as a HS wrestler. Soft tissue injury. I was one hurting unit. Took 6 months to get any better. Funny thing was SITTING made it worse. It actually didn't get better until we told the medical experts to GTH, and I started wrestling again. Changing the oil or a tire is not the same as sitting in a crappy seat using the rudders (leg presses hurt like he11 to) for hours at a time.

After a four day trip my back is killing me and I seriously need to go home and do some hard labor or mountain biking to get it feeling better. Anyone who hasn't had a serious back injury will never understand. I did all kinds of physical labor while out with a OJI because it made me feel better. Sitting killed me.

Workers comp is a racket. I hurt my back putting my flight kit into the flight-deck holder a year ago August. It hurt immediately but was tolerable so I decided to fly the out and back and feel it out and have the company replace me on the return if it was too bad. Well it slowly got worse to the point I was just about in tears when I got back. I went to the doctor and was prescribed the standard rest, ice and heat, anti-inflammatories and vicodin. Ended up going to PT and numerous doctors plus the 2 leading back specialists in the Midwest with a common answer of surgery or the more preferred choice, time. The WC insurance company wouldn't pay for surgery and really couldn't see why I was not able to work yet. Mind you I was taking narcotics for pain up until about 2 weeks prior to returning to work. They couldn't see the conflict of narcotics and flying. During this 6 months my doctors actually told me to go water skiing because it was something I would normally be doing and physical movement wasn't hurting my back, sitting was. Can you imagine if my WC company would have had a PI photograph that? Even though it was prescribed by the doctors I think it would be hard convincing a judge or jury knowing the mentality of all injuries require bed rest thought process we have in this society.

Long story longer, I was required by the insurance company to go to a independent medical review(IMR). The name couldn't be further from the truth. A doctor whose only pay comes from WC insurance companies. Literally a hired hit man. I brought my MRI's, CT scan and numerous medical records so that he could review them. My wife and I arrived with all this documentation and then was alarmed to listen for 40 minutes to this man tell us how great he was and all awards he has received. Every one of the awards were handed out by the insurance industries and not a single one by his peers. The entire exam was standing on my toes, heels, walking around the exam table and touching my toes. He then told me to go back to work and there must be a lot of other pilots who have back pain and suck it up. As I was leaving the exam room I asked if he was going to mail back my records when he was done reviewing them. His response was that I should take them since he doesn't know how to read them and oh by the way when I go to my next flight physical I shouldn't mention this injury because I wouldn't be legal to fly. After this "exam" the WC insurance cut off all payments and my only recourse was to file with the state for an appeal which if I'm lucky will only take 15 months.

Lucky for me though about a month later I was feeling much better and able to return to work. Exactly as predicted by the specialists.

You sit in the seat and push the rudders for hours at a time....strange.

No, but my wife was there. She documented everthing that was said. I have up to 12 years to file an appeal. Still contemplating filing a complaint with the state medical board though.
