I do agree that I've never come across a woman that knew which way is north.

That's what happens when you hang around preschools....
Mesaba had a wingtip strike a few years ago on the CRJ900. The plane flew for 4 days before a Captain finally noticed the damage on a post flight walk around as the offending crew never bothered to write it up and a dozen pre flights went by without anyone noticing either.
"She reported that she closed the throttles because it was company procedure to close the throttles at 50 feet."
i can't believe people who get paid to fly passengers are having a discussion about what is and isn't proper crosswind technique. Simply unbelievable.
Here's a nice briefing from Airbus on their recommended technique...wings-level ie crabbed approach. This document shows both techniques and discusses the geometry limits of certain designs and how that relates to the strength of the crosswind. Good read.
