Not so long ago...In a galaxy far far away.

So Capt. D-bag arranges a contractually non- compliant van ride for the last day of our 10 day (insert sarcasm here) trip. Although he does not directly inform me of this, I discover that he intends to have the crew on a van that departs the hotel 1 hour and 30 minutes before our scheduled departure. (One hour is contract compliant) Since I can look out my window and see the terminal building, I call the company and imform them that I will not be leaving on that van and will leave on the next one. In the morning I receive a call from the hotel clerk saying the crew is looking for me. I asked her to inform the Captain that I will depart the hotel in a contractually compliant manner. When I arrive at the gate early I see D-bag in the jetway

D-bag: Oh! you made it!

Me: Why wouldn't I, I can see the terminal from my hotel window.

D-bag: I informed you on what van we were going to take.

Me: No you didn't. But it doesn't matter, I wasn't going to take a van not in compliance with our contract.

D-bag: The flight attendants heard me.

Me: It doesn't matter, what's that got to do with anything?

D-Bag: Well, I guess we need to have your hearing checked.

Me: Are you implying I am unfit to fly?

D-Bag: (Enraged) That's it! I've had enough!. Do you want off this trip!? Because I'll call the Chief Pilot and have you removed!

Me: You can do whatever you want to do.

D-bag: That's it! You are off the trip! I'm calling right now!

Me: Knock yourself out. Just curious, are you going to tell him you want me off the trip because I showed up on time.

D-Bag: You're being argumentative! I can't work with you...you're gone.

Me: Go ahead man...roll the dice. Should I go ahead and call my union rep?

Ya gotta finish the story. Can't leave us all hanging bro.

So, curious nature I have, what company is this anyway?

I'll tune in later for the final chapter.

Hells yeah, Wes. I gotta know how this one ended up.

Good for you, man. Some captains feel that they are "the boss" of you, even when you're not on the airplane. It's amazing, it even continues during their personal life. I can't tell you how many captains I've experienced who think they somehow have jurisdiction over FO's, even when they're at a hotel or out at a bar having drinks. Thankfully it's not all of them.
I suppose it's just part of the power trip that some guys suffer from when they get that upgrade. They just can't separate the job from their personal lives. Unfortunately, power trippin' captains have alone caused management to take away much of the captain's authority in our industry.
I don't care if you're at a hotel or not; until you step onto that aircraft, he really doesn't have any recourse to tell you what to do. Just do your job the way you're supposed to.

This has to be CAL. Both could have handled this better. It is best to not ever get the Chiefs involved if at all possible.

I have heard of where the pilots share a crash pad with a captain and he is "the captain" at the crash pad too. Kinda funny when you think about it.

Captains who push captains authority usually get pushed around by women.

....sorry....part two....

I'm assuming after some soul searching he realized it was pointless and asked if " we were going to play nice?" We completed the last day with the only conversation being the reading of checklists (fine with me).

One funny note. It was my leg and after a smooth approach and landing the CAPTAIN was standing in the doorway saying goodbye to the pax when a gentleman stopped at door and asked " are you in the military?" (Inflate chest) the CAPTAIN responded "Why yes I am!" (non flying military BTW). The passenger says " I could tell by the way you handled the airplane, really smooth!"
LMAO...almost shot coffee out the nose.

Don't get me wrong, I have alot of respect for the men and women who have and continue to serve, but this guy was a horse's arse.

There is more to the story that led up to this, but let us just say that we had a total disagreement on management-labor relations.

Hopefully, the company in question utilizes "no-fly" lists.

If the idiot captain wants to make an issue out of it and call the company, let him. He's just putting the noose around his own neck. Maybe if he's stupid enough, you can move up a number.

Sounds more like the right-seat-captain had a spat with the left-seat captain.

Are you stupid? Which part of your Avatar are you? the left or right?
Would you allow someone to tell you to waive provisions in your contract?
Just curious, how am I a right seat Captain because I refused to waive my contract provisions regarding the hotel van?

You handled the situation like a total idiot. (although the capt/AC/whatever he chooses to be titled is a d-bag). Did you actually say "blah blah blah contractually compliant" Are you the little 150 lbs wimp that says, "hey Mr. if you push me again I'm going to sue you and then tell my wife on you....."
Why did you let it boil over into a confruntation. Call the F'ing guy on the hotel phone and tell him that "we have a 0700 show so I'm taking the 0630 van and not the 0530 van." .....whatever the time were......
The entire crew had no idea where you were for the morning van so everyone will think you overslept. A simple phone call would have mitigated the entire ordeal.

until you step onto that aircraft

In our operations, as well as previous ststesside ones I have worked at...the commander is responsible for the crew while away from base, regardless of whether the crew is on duty or not...not to say the commander has complete authority over the actions of the other crewmembers...but this whole thread is about a whining idiot and his "contractually compliant transport" good grief boys get real...if the guy wants to go early then fine come later but raising ridiculous points about contractually compliant is moronic...whats the whole stuation??? weather or MEL items the Capt might have wanted some extra time to review??? there has to be something missing to "f.o. Jr Halfbright's" story here

AAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, HEHEHEHE AAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA, SOMEONES ANGRY...:)

Look Junior, I can tell you're an insecure little silver spoon in mouth brat who still rebels against authority. How do I know this...just by the way you responded to my little post. You aint <---yes its a word in the south, the Captain and you aint telling us the whole story. Just by your little whiny post, I'm guessing you probably questioned every decision the captain made for the last 10 days and things finally came to a head that last day.

You may want to look at how you act and carry yourself. Yes the CA is probably a Dbag Ahole that no one wants to fly with. But you are also the disrespectful, anti-authority, Right Seat CA that REAL Captains bid avoid. May you always fly with an all male crew. Bye Bye...

Yeah, I dont blame the guy, its hard to argue with an idiot...

AAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....good job Chuck. Here let me finish that sentence for ya

One funny note. It was my leg and after a smooth approach and landing...
I had to run to FI right away and tell everybody cause I have no real friends to tell about my day.

Dude just relax...life is too short to get worked up over 30 min of sleep.

My query to your stupidity was justified and made with no anger. If I touched a nerve about working at Mesa (hopefully you aren't still there), you have my sincere apology. However, you made a boatload of assumptions without knowing me. At no time during any portion of the flying did I ever question the Captain's authority.

As a matter of fact things were quite amicable until I was told that our Union was horrible and that I should be happy to have had a job. Upon protest, I was then told that if I didn't like my contract that I should quit.

Junior? Insecure? Brat? Way off buddy. If standing up for my contract by refusing to violate it makes me a right seat Captain then I'll take those stripes. Look, from your avatar it appears you are a Mesa survivor or maybe you're still there, either way, I don't think you have any idea as to what is going on at this airline.

I'm a Captain at the same airline. The FO can take whatever van he wants. If he shows up on time, who cares? If he shows up late, then it's his responsibility, we're all adults. He used the term "Contractually Compliant van" because that is a hot-button topic right now, and was trying to make a point . . . . and he was right. Why you ass-clowns want to weigh in on this AirTran issue is beyond me. From what I hear, MESA guys don't know much about hotels, since they're either sharing a trailer at an out station, sleeping on the plane, or flying 26 legs a day and living in their parent's basement.

I love how putting a funny avatar up automatically associates me with Mesa Airlines...
HAHAHA I love it!
Dont work there, never worked there, never slept on a purple board between seats...sorry chaps, hate to bust your bollocks but you two are both wrong.
I have no dog in this fight, I think its a SH!TTY deal u guys are getting but Right seat CA over here whined his way onto FI to garner sympathy and I aint about to give it to him. In fact, since he wont disclose (read lie) about what really happened and only told the portion to make him look good, I just razzed him a bit...so grow a pair and suck it up or not - whatever...IDK.

Laid back

During a CRM class, the instructor asked: "Suppose your F/O shows up at the airplane five minutes before pushback. How would you handle that?"
An old Captain replied: "If he beats me, he beats me."

It seems to me that you didn't do anything to difuse the situation. My guess is that you were pissed off at this guy throughout the trip and you took this opportunity to stoke the fire. Not saying the Capt was right but you yourself handled it poorly.

Napoleon Syndrome maybe?

I'd prefer to read a thread like this that is part seriousness and part humorous. There's a chance to learn something all while having the chance to laugh at some of your witty comments.

The other option is to listen to Brown-to-the-Bone and his threads all day long.

Wow, you appear to be the one who is really sensitive about the issue of right seat Captains. What's the matter, did your First Officers stop offering to carry your flight bag?

Ramper:"Hey Captain, the airplane's burning! Where are you going?"
Front9 : "Hold on, I have to save my hat!"

Seriously, I posted the thread purely for the entertainment of those who might have a clue as to what is happening here. I have no problem with authority, however, when you cross the line between opinion and antagonism, I am going to speak up. I couldn't give 2 shiites as to wether you are sympathetic or not.

So while you are making assumptions about me, here is one for you. Since you don't work at Mesa and you use that Avatar, you must have some experience with all male flight crews.

And bollocks? seriously? Who are you, Winnie the Pooh?

Actually, I think the quote was " .. . . the FO Shows up 5 minutes before departure with a cup of Starbucks and the newspaper under his arm . . .".

I'm betting you are on a lot of FO's "no fly list" and probably for a reason. I'm also betting you're a little short in the johnson department and wear your uniform in public places a lot.
