Passing along some info for interested parties...

I rode the crew bus with Jack Lewis today and asked him about the seat bid rumor. He said it is no longer happening in February as was tbe latest rumor. He said it is looking promising for early April. He also mentioned that it really can't happen any later than early April due to issues with manning of LAX.

So are the latest numbers still 30 in a pool and maybe 70 more hired in '03??? or is there any better news..

thanks

good question

On a previous discussion with Jack, he said we will hire about 100 for attrition only in 03. From what I have seen and heard, Fed Ex has always been very conservative in their hiring forecast. We seemed to be pleasantly surprised more often then not. I'm sure the 100 will be the minimum number of new guys on the property in 03. That's my $.02 worth.

We'll I'm trying to be one of those 70 that aren't in the pool, we'll see...

If they push the seat bid, does that have any bearing on whether or not they start training in March?

It shouldn't. It's only a couple of months and rumor has it that the bid will primarily involve the plus-up of LA, so basically some domicile swapping on the upper end of the seniority list. Of course the resumption of training in March isn't set in stone either, that just happens to be the accepted/most popular rumor at the moment.

give me a bid

Holy S%&*!

I need a bid, I've forgotten how to wing down, top rudder. Just a S/O sleeping for a livin''. rip

Wing Down Top Rudder.....

Ah, my KPC reluctant aviator....

Vacation is 2nd week in July, I'll be at the Saltery, whipping that water with a #8 fly rod, see you there!

No bid till April, & no "window" seat for the old dog, unless ANC. And that commute is too long.

best to family, see ya, rip

Ok assuming the hiring starts in mid-early 2003, and I am lucky enough to get an interview..... what then?

Albie15 does a prep I hear, what else can one do? Is there a site with info that's current and worthwhile or is this a standard meet and greet with some typical ATP questions thrown in? followed by a Sim (or preceeded by)?

Thanks

V70T5,
Go to www.aviationinterviews.com and check out their interview reports, they are right on as to what to expect in an interview with Fedex. Albie does give an awesome coaching/prep and if you get an interview I highly recommend giving him a call...you got nothing to lose 'cause he gives you a money back guarantee if you don't get hired.

I plan to do all I can to prep, but I'm most concerned about the sim as I've never flown a "heavy" jet, and have little non-glass cockpit time, so the combination of both the steamgauges and DC-10 sim or 727 sim may be a bit much without a proper prep... is there a good sim prep for Fedex, in Memphis or elsewhere?

Fed Ex Sim

I too am wondering about the sim. I flew a 707 sim once, many moons ago, S turned all the way down final. Not pretty.

I read somewhere (here?) that the Fed Ex sim is not necessarily a pass/fail ride. I seem to recall it was to see how you interacted in the cockpit. In fact I was not going to do a prep sim becasue of that knowledge. But obviously this does nothing to answer your question.

I see a lot of us are going for the few slots this year. Should be interesting. Good luck.

Yes there is. They are called Pan Am Training. They are located in east Memphis ( away from the gang land getto). You can do a prep there in a DC10 for about $750 an hour with motion. They are familure with the Fed Ex profile and overall do a good job. As for their number, I dont have it. But you can call information (901-555-1212) and request it. They are the only "Pan Am" in the Memphis area.

Good Luck

V70T5,
Get the hookup from AlbieF15 - the sim is definitely pass/fail. If you don't pass, you don't go to day two of the interview.

The CRM eval CCDiscoB mentions is a separate phase of the interview (not in the sim).

Your interview sim check will most likely be in the Airbus, but no matter - most any big jet sim will be excellent practice (I did my prep in a 707). I don't know what Pan Am has to offer, but I do have a Memphis phone book: 901-748-7500. Good luck.

The sim is day one and is pass/fail. If you fail, no day two. I did my sim in the Airbus. It is the older Airbus with a yoke, not a joystick on the side. The cockpit is glass but they cover up the speed tape and all the other bells & whistles so all you are flying is basic instruments. The profile is an airwork drill. If your scan is rusty, definitely get some sim time prior.

FDX Sim

The Sim is NOT a Pass/Fail. There is a min. score to continue on to the next day, however you do receive a score for the sim, as with the interview, CRM drill, and tests. They will use a composite of all the events to determine who they hire. Tank any one event and your done.

What I'm trying to say is you want to do the best you can on the sim. That way, you can offset a bad score on the tests.

Cheers!

Man, thanks a lot guys... I will definitely spare no expense and check out Pan Am for that 10 sim, and do a couple of hrs in it the day before.. I am also gonna enlist a CFII out here to run a drill on me in a Frasca 300 for a few hrs...and Call Albie15 for his service.

I read someplace that this is the toughest interview in the airline business today.... thank God they don't have the AMR astronaut physical.

BTW... what docs do I need and how current do they have to be? If I've been out of school for 10 years, are my 2 year old transcripts good? And what of the NHSTA bs??? Should I wait till they call, or do it now? It could be a few months before they call..(if they call)

Now, I just have to wait and see if I get this interview or not.... will keep all posted..

V70T5,
ATP, Class 1 medical, FE written within the past 2 yrs (unless you have FE certificate), your old transcripts should be fine, logbook (flight history summary for military).

I don't remember needing anything else - but I may have blocked the memory. Hope you get the call.

Folks,

If you are going to do a FedEx interview, good prep is important. However...don't get overly intimidated! Success rates walking in the door are in the 65-90% range depending on the group. They WANT to hire you when you walk in.

If I had money to burn for a sim, I'd find an operation that has an A300 or A310 somewhere....that is what you will get your eval in 9 out of 10 times.

As for the interview workup...well...I'll let others on the board speak if the Emerald Coast Interview prep was worth their time. (Percentages do go way up....) The biggest point I'm trying to make is if you get the call, do your homework, but don't freak out. Its not the most "fun" interview you'll ever have but it is certainly not a "hostile" interview. The biggest challenge is that when you go through, you'll get a lot of blank stares and non-committal responses during your SBI (Situation Based Interview), and many guys wonder who they are doing, and the sim and tests are likewise zero feedback events (other than the call saying yes...you passed the sim...)

BTW.....one of my primary interviewers was Warren Travis, an MD-11 Captain who is about to retire. I still chat with him whenever I catch him in the AOC. The PROCESS at FedEx can appear to be a bit cold, but the PEOPLE behind the process are all actually pretty nice folks.

Now...lets all hope the hiring train gets rolling again soon!
