"6 more airplanes this year equal how many pilots? "

5.5 crews per aircraft equals 11 pilots per additional aircraft.

6 aircraft x 11 pilots equals 66 additional pilots, plus whatever might be needed for attrition (lost medical, changed career path, etc....not many for retirement)

66 to fill those 6 airplanes... plus additional to fill seats opened up by the upgrades needed as a result of those airplanes.

We'll see what happens..

Check out the July COLA (Complany Offered Leaves of Absence):

DATE CA FO
July 1, 10 4
July 2, 10 4
July 3, 10 4
July 4, 10 4
July 5, 10 4
July 6, 12 6
July 7, 18 6
July 8, 18 6
July 9, 20 8
July 10, 22 10
July 11, 22 10
July 12, 22 10
July 13, 22 10
July 14, 26 12
July 15, 26 12
July 16, 26 12
July 17, 28 12
July 18, 28 12
...and so on...

You get the idea. Those are a lot of extra pilots everyday. That is for the CRJ50, but they could always displace pilots to the CRJ70. I find it hard to believe that we will be hiring hundreds more for 6 airplanes. Unless we are getting more  Interesting thing is that we had a lot of extra FO's last month, in July we have a lot fo extra captains.

Anyways....

Well, I just talked to the HR dept. and they are delaying class for just a week...not sure why.

Also, I asked them about more interviews for the future and she said that they are going to have 4 more interview dates next month. Who knows whats goin' on?!?!

Welcome to the party! During indoc, when you get your tour of the pilot's lounge (where the Vfiles and computer terminals are located) look around for the RJDC display and pick up some free materials. Then, after your checkride, you can start reading up on why you are able to have this job.

N2264J,
Thank ya for the info.

6 more airplanes this year equal how many pilots?

One thing I had pointed out to me earlier, each new aircraft actually means three new pilot positions (one new Captain and 2 new F.O.'s):

One F.O. transitions to CP
One newhire to fill F.O. spot in new plane
One newhire to fill F.O. spot left by transitioning F.O.

I guess the math works out the same for number of new hires but somehow this thought always made me feel even better!

I interviewed in April, so I sure hope they will have more classes this year.

Vacancy Bid

A vacancy bid was recently released that stated, in part, that 36 FO positions needed to be filled in the CRJ due to "attrition" and "additional aircraft." To the extent that eligible 70-seaters do not bid back to the CRJ, those seats will need to be filled by new hires. That is why there is at least one class scheduled in June and another in July and why an HR person told me yesterday that they are conducting further interviews.

Looking,

I'm new at this stuff, and I was just trying to figure out what you meant by:

"To the extent that eligible 70-seaters do not bid back to the CRJ"

Thanks,
Hose

Some pilots, based on their seniority, may elect to bid away from the CL-700 for a better schedule and more days off.

Bidding the CL-65 might mean getting a line instead of sitting on reserve for the foreseeable future (especially considering the fact that Comair is only allowed 27 CL-700s by the Delta scope clause and we're almost there) and the money is more or less the same.

It's a personal quality of life issue. You'll figure it out soon enough. Growth is your friend and our growth is currently being challenged and artificially restricted by pilots at another airline via our union. They believe you were just hired into a job they "own" and are entitled to. Don't get me wrong, ALPA is a great union (I was a union volunteer for 4 years) it's just suffering from extremely bad managment right now having been hijacked by powerful mainline interests. But more on that later-study for the checkride and get that behind you.

The latest rumor from two sources is that they are talking about two classes in July. Of course this could change or may have changed already, but I know how much poolies (like me) love rumors. I sure hope that these rumors are true.

I can tell ya that there will not be two classes in July.
As far as the first class, it is still a maybe.

Ok, Stan, you want good rumors, right?:) Comair will probably need 65-70 more FOs by the end of the year to fill current vacancies in the 50 and then those created by 50 guys going to the 70 (4 more to be delivered). Of course no one really knows how many are in the pool to fill those seats. May have to have a few more interviews?
