there are a few in every airline that are undesirable.

off the subject sorry, 70 seater, CL 700, blah, blah , if you are wrapped up about the freakin number of the thing, well there are more important things to ask questions about, an examiner isn;t going to ask what the number of the aircraft is.

as for my other comment, Pilots from previous airlines, Peidmont, Allegheny, Eagle are among some of the best to fly with, they really appreciate their job here, as I said a great bunch of people work and fly here, good luck to you all. we''ll have a good time flying, cheers.

oh, and "attrition" mentioned before, it means alot of fired FO's this last year for bad attitudes and insubordination from other airlines.

Guam isn't kidding about this.

98% of the Captains at Comair are excellent. Many of them offer a very broad background of experiences having flown at other airlines, in the military, for charter operations, for freight operations, etc. They make flying for the company a wonderful experience and treat their F/Os as if they are part of a team -- rather than simply as a student pilot occupying the seat next to them.

Then there's the other 2%...
(every airline has their 2%)

Don't let guys like that get you down. After a few years you'll come to realize that you can be an outstanding first officer and still have opinions and techniques that are all your own.

Not necessarily but talking too much is usually an ingredient in the perception of a bad attitude or insubordination.

We used to put those words of wisdom out at every ALPA new hire dinner before the strike. Not sure if that's still being done in light of the increase in terminations we've had this year (where the new guy passed up an excellent opportunity to be quite) but it comes from ALPA's damage control experiences of new hires embarrassing themselves unnecessarily. One of the more popular storys around campus was the new First Officer who was savagely berating the company for all its faults for several legs before he learned that the Captain he was flying with happened to be Senior Vice President of Flight Operations. This, of course, is the most extreme example but why put yourself in that position?

And I'm not talking about withholding information from the Captain about the successful and safe completion of the flight. Input from that catagory is welcomed from all members of the crew. But the year of probation is always a good time to learn the company and its culture before you start having an opinion. Make the best of it. You'll fly with a many different people.
Ask the Captain a lot of questions. Keep an open mind and people will like you.

N2246J responded that way to my post, I don't operate that way, I don't treat the FO's I fly with that way! those words are not mine to live by.

never have and don't intend to.

the bad FO stuff is just some words of advice to very few.

I will go so far out of my to help my crews, I have actually gone to the carpet dance for sticking up for my crews to get more rest. i am not seeking any flame or medals. just clearing this bullsh1t session.

there are a bunch of stories about an FO did this or that, just be happy to be here and stay positive, ask questions, speak up when you are uncomfortable.

It'll be fun, we fly all over, now Nova scotia, new brunswick, seattle, it's cool, Monterrey Mexico.

For all the new guys, welcome and congrats...

if you're in training, don't worry too much, just enjoy the experience. study hard, work hard, then go home and have some brews with your classmates. you'd really have to work at it to not make it through training. don't be the guy who asks off-topic questions (the instructors tell you what you need to know) and don't ever begin a sentence with "that's not how we did it at (your old airline)." everyone wants you to pass, don't fight it.

if you're on reserve, b1tch and gossip with your buddies, but not necessarily your captains, at least when you're new. god knows i did it, but when you're new you may not know what you're talking about. i'm sure i sounded like a jacka$$ to quite a few of my captains. just keep your head down and your nose clean for the first year. but rest assured, everybody whines about everything: reserve, scheduling, growth, upgrades, new bases, commuting, pay and all the various ways every other airline or airline pilot (ever) is vastly inferior to Comair.

an FO gave Oz an earful on a trip? Hilarious! so he got to hear someone's unvarnished opinion for a change. what, like we're going to fire the guy for b1tching? if so, we're all going to be on the street. oh sure, a few guys get sent packing every now and then for doing stupid things, but most guys quit in hopes of getting a faster upgrade somewhere else. to each his own...

it's a fun place to work, and you'll fly with a lot of great people. enjoy it!

Hey new F/O's, don't let some piece of crusty ole' captain push you around because he can. If you screw up, that's another matter. But don't go bustin' their chops either, you are both supposed to be professionals.

In the two months I've been on line, I haven't flown with anything but professional captains. Everyone is great to fly with.

The majority of people who bitch about this and that have never been anywhere else and don't know how good they have it.

I'll weigh-in on this thread (or what it's become) with this advice:

JUST BE YOURSELF.

If you're a horse's arse you're not going to be able to help yourself anyway and you're doomed. For the other 99.976% of us, there is nothing to worry about.

So enjoy the training (its challenging but fair and mostly relevant), enjoy reserve (yes, it's a pain but, if this is your first airline job, than just do a reality check every once in awhile and realize how lucky you are) and enjoy the company -- it really is a good one.

I interviewed in June and am now in the pool. Based on all prior posts I'm thinking 6 months in the pool, does that sound about right?
