Not a lot, but certainly enough for us to live comfortably, and put enough into retirement accounts that will keep us comfortable after we call it quits (right now with modest growth of about 5-6% they project to be about 7 million when we retire at 60).

You're going to have 7 million in a retirement plan, working as a regional pilot? You need to take some pay concessions...that's way too much government property for you to be possessing.

The VP SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS CLASS! This is now way to treat an upper level leader of your company. That capt should be talked to and grilled by the CPO's. No questions asked. I would feel honored personally to have a member of my senior management on board my aircraft and would do anything to accomadate them. Senior level management should have been treated better in this case. Remember, were just the ones drivin the bus, they are the ones leading us!

No, but I am kind of curious how an employer can almost fire an employee for such a thing.

Evidently, the airline was able to give the pilot 90 days off without pay and then it was reduced to 30.

Even without a union, wouldn't an employer have to have grounds to fire you, give you 90 days off without pay or give you 30 days off without pay?

I'm not trying to start anything, I'm just curious about whether or not the airline had a leg to stand on...you'd think they would have, considering that people do sue when wrongfully terminated from employment.

Sarcasm? Probably not. While I feel for the guy and the paycuts that he (and others) have taken, I don't have a whole lot of sympathy when you make 100-150K+ a year, and don't have at least a months worth of liquid salary saved up.

10000K would pay my mortgage for 7 MONTHS. Part of the reason that so many pilots out there at the majors have financial issues is that they live at the very max of their income, rather then living modestly.

Tie right into the pension arguements. While I think it totally sucks that pensions are getting cut- I have to wonder what these guys did with their money all of those years. They would have been recalled at this last MEC meeting had they not resigned. The resignation was, I think the right thing to do to save a little bit of face.

Chairmen, CEOs, Presidents, VPs, Directors - they all come and go. They show up change a couple things, for better or for worse, they collect their bonuses and stock options, spin the assets or perhaps the entire company then move on. They don't even necessarily stay in aviation.

Pilots have the most vested, long term interest in any airline. Unlike Management, if an airline folds the pilots start at the bottom, once again. That’s seniority, pay, retirement and schedule.

The previous Chairman, CEO and President at my airline refused to be treated any differently than any other employee or passenger. Management is just another group of people with different jobs. They can’t live without us, as much as they would like to, and unfortunately, we can’t live without them.

One of the best statements our previous Chairman, CEO and President ever made to me was, “I just wish everyone could see no one's job is any more important than anyone else’s.”

Since your so much into disclosure....how much of that 90K a year does your wife make?

Assuming your 25 (ha ha), and you save every year till your 60 at 6% you only need to invest $4892 a month (57K a year).

Time for math:

90 K a year....lets see you can shelter 30K (duel income) a year in a 401K....so that 60 K taxable...hmm....ok..then minus 25% (well assume a lot of deductions) for tax....45 K a year take home. Oh.... you still need to save an additional 27K to bring you yearly total to 57K to make your 7 million.....so...carry the one....Your takehome pay is about 18K a year after all your savings.

So you are living on $1500 a month. Thats increadibly reasonable. What is the big deal with all these stupid rich airline pilots that are pissing and moaning about their pensions going away. We can all just live on $1500 a month and be fine.

I wish I was a paying passenger on this flight and overheard this VP of revenue...errr (LOSS) management trying to to get the business/first seat. I would make sure my party and I sat right next to him then proceed to bad mouth management with a vengeance! Then finally turn to him and tell him to take a seat in coach already so we all can leave! I mean come on, you're riding for free and you are demanding a business/first class seat? The nerve! Typical management puke. Pilots have taken 30 to 50% cuts while management gets raises and incentives like their golden parachutes in order to retain the best "talent"? The LEAST he could have done when finding out their were crewmembers who needed a rest area was to immediately accept a coach seat.

Okay- I was hoping that this would all die down a bit, because it was not my intent to bring my finances into debate in this thread.

In fact, my post really didn't belong in the first place. But since this has failed to die off, let me clarify a few things.

First off, let me state that I think it's great that the pilots at CO are contributing to this guy. This is a perfect example of unity and brother(sister)hood if I have ever seen one, and exactly what one of the great benefits of the union is. I was a strong supporter of employee support programs, and contribute today at my employer like I have in the past.

That said, I stand firm in my belief that there are too many broke major airline pilots. I understand that it sucks to have your pay slashed and pensions cut. But geeze- I've never made six figures, and seem to be able to get by. Perhaps there are a few folks out there living beyond their means? But that's a topic for another thread.

As for my finances, it was never my intent to get into a pissing match over whose 401K (or weiner) is bigger. I'm just pointing out that it's possible to save significant amounts of money in a reasonable time. FWIW, my calculations aren't incorrect. You just make certain assumptions that are.

My calculations are based on current balances, modest growth, employer contributions (which are actually larger than my own), salary increases at contractual rates, profit sharing outlooks (paid into 401K funds and based on 20 years of historical data), and a contribution of at least 6% of our income. At no point does our contribution reach the 30K/year limit (although it does come close as we near retirement) The only thing that I did make a mistake on was the age at which I plan to retire (65 instead of 60) if I want to walk away with just under the 7 million. Otherwise I leave with about 5 mil. All I can say is it pays to start early (in our cases 22 and 24). I'll willingly eat ramen now, to have the option of caviar later. That's one thing my parents taught me. I'll also add that we have been rather fortunate with our investements and seen roughly 30% growth the past 3 years on our accounts, which has certainly helped.

As for your little "savings calculator", rather than use something that figures out an end figure, why not use a 401K calulator and input known variables for your "witch hunt". You'll find that they tend to be a bit more accurate.

Well, yes, I do know people that work at CAL, but that has nothing to do with this. This information is all available to any ALPA member. The FPL scam is described in the last newsletter from the CLE LEC and is discussed in the minutes from the last Executive Council meeting at National. The new reps are also discussed in the newsletter from the CLE council. Any ALPA member can read these things in their ALPA.org mailbox.

Excellent analysis. I always found it interesting that of all the PFT children out there, this clown is the only one who as you so perfectly describe, tries to legitimize himself with diatribe and rhetoric.

I notice Mr. Expert does not have any info or response on why JP crossed the line. I guess it is just easier to sling mud and vile instead of facts and circumstances. For a guy who thinks PFT is such a grey issue, he sure spews in black and white.

What is even more hilarious is the fact that the LEC in CLE and their antics are one of the reasons that SBR is being pushed so hard at CAL. I wonder if PCL PFT boy knows that the CLE guys were a rubber stamp for the outgoing MEC? Probably not.

You are correct on all counts. I was pointing out a technicality to PFT boy to show that once again he was talking out of his rear blow hole.

I was infuriated they were not recalled and sent packing. However that is what ALPA has developed into these days. It doesn't matter where you are from a local or national level, the modes operandi is not to rock the boat.

P.S. Yes Occam and Rez, I talked to my representatives numerous times about this so hold the lecture.
