ASA furloughs 80 pilots

Anyone affected by this furlough be advised that if you have sick time accrued, it does not pay out on 2/9... you lose it... straight from the mouth of DG during my "personal" phone call.

cough... I've got about 22 hours according to my last pay stub... cough.

Vacation, OTOH, will pay out.

Careful. There is something in the HR Manual about having to work your complete notice period (last two weeks). If you call in sick, you don't get your vacation pay. This applies to people who resign,. not really sure how it applies to furloughs, since you didn't resign or give 2 weeks notice.You might want to make sure before that cough gets too bad!! Now that furloughs are official, I sincerely hope no one picks up open time. I'm sure there will be people who do but it is a shame.

The section I'm referring to is Human Resources manual, Chapter 2, section 27. Page 2-27.4, paragraph D section 4. Not really clear, but you might want to check. Hate to see you lose your vacation pay. Hopefully it won't effect furloughs.

I'm on my 4th gig in since my ACA expiration in 05. This last one hurt the most; six figures, great QOL, beni's, etc, but the real kicker is its nearly impossible finding another flying job.

I really wish we could do something to help them pay their bills. 50$ per month from each ASA pilot would provide 1000.00 per month for the 80 pilots. I will be first to volunteer or help get this going. Please let me know if you think this is a viable option.

This a noble idea but how about a donation pot in the crew room? I'd shoot something to the CP's and Holt.

A dues assessment to pay COBRA premiums for those furloughed has been a pretty common thing in the past at other airlines. The assessment per pilot is minimal and it can make all the difference in the world to someone hitting the street and trying to figure out how they're going to pay the premiums. COBRA is incredibly expensive.

While you are drinking your Koolaid... Management should have used language such as. "Furloughs are highly likely" or "Furloughs should be expected in January". Instead of weak and nebulous suggestions that the economy is bad. I wonder how long ASA management knew this coming. If they found out last week, that is understandable, but I suspect this decision was made many weeks ago. For furloughed pilots, it's like a disease. The earlier they know the condition, the more time they have to prepare and recover from it. I could care less about your fat asses, sitting around all cozy while gainfully employed.

Hate to ask this, but are you guys going to keep raising the assessment 10.00/month for every so many people furloughed? Nobody wants to hear it, but you guys could get this going and the company could come right out and announce another 80 folks. Then what? I don't think this system is legit. In no way do I think active pilots should be required to help a furloughed pilot pay bills, nor should I feel bad for not contributing.

Let me ask you this? I go to work everyday and I have to get drug tested to prove that I am a clean and able person for the job. Right now I could quit my job and apply for welfare and I wouldn't be required to be drug tested to receive free money from the government. Clearly something is wrong with our system here. Though it is different, I think if you guys are going to starting taking $50.00 out of each of your checks to aid your furloughed guys, you might as well just tell your management that you want to take paycuts to mitigate your furloughs. Would this be a free ride, or would the furloughed guys be required to pay this money back within a year after coming back on the property, or 6 months after resigning their seniority number?

I will be more than happy in a dues assessment that goes towards paying for COBRA or something like that.

To me, cutting a check in the name of CASH in this case is no different than giving a homeless guy money. (sorry if the analogy comes across poorly) I want to be sure that my money is going to something of value and is accountable in the end.

There is never a "good" or "better" time to tell someone that they will be furloughed.

The best time is right after I draw a hot bubble bath, turn on some Barry White, and soap up my undercarriage.

Oh...Furloughs. But you know what? We can all stop bending over now. Because here comes management with the coup de grâce...around the fleshy corner with ASA's own version of a DIRTY SANCHEZ!

Does ALPA do anything in the form of information for these guys and girls, I haven't seen anything from the Union. Guess they are just waking up.
