SWA/AAI SLI agreement in principle.

Could you explain how and why this happens ? Me no habla. A full description of life at the bottom is also welcomed.

A Tuesday-Thursday reserve block in September, for example, might go more senior. People don't generally call in sick much during the week, so chances are you won't get used. Then you can scoop up extra flying on the weekend, or just enjoy your time off. Weekend reserve will always go to the bottom most guys.
 
First of all, there are ALWAYS open time trips at SWA....a LOT less in Feb than July, but still there are open time trips. Lots of guys bid reserve and pickup from open time on their off days. This limits what the company can give you on reserve due to legality. Thus, after you've picked up on your off days....when a trip pops in open time, no one picks it up, and it eventually goes to a reserve, they have to give it to the next guy on reserve since you are not legal. This only works if you are willing to be on call 2 hours from checkin, but it is a strategy for many here. Usually it is the group that wants steady months of 130-140 trips for pay per month. The other strategy is when guys go balls to the wall all the time and try to hit 200 every month...these are the "tournament level" players and they have no problem "risking" their monthly income by dumping everything they have and then relying on the system to produce high paying, low blocking trips...they are constantly on the computer trying to get rid of stuff and move stuff around and bid and rebid, etc. I am neither so I am not talking from vast experience, although I have had my months of each strategy.
 
Air Trannies have NO CLUE how much money they're gonna make. It's amazing, you can tell them all you want, and they still don't get it.
 
If this has been answered already I apologize for asking. How long do people spend on reserve? Most grateful if you happen to have hire dates.
 
I live and own a place in Atlanta. And own a sailboat in the carribean. I hold all weekends and holidays off. I credited 119 hours this month. My girlfriend is a doctor who has a practice in Atlanta.
Now after 5 years here I won't be able to hold Atlanta - even on reserve. So now i will get laid less and sail less, and will now have to commute to sit reserve all for some higher hourly pay.. Sorry I'm not jumping for joy. I'd gladly trade the raise for my seniority back.
 
Serious question, along the lines of what you just posted.

I bid #7 in MCO. I hold weekends off and all holidays. I get my choice of long overnights at an international destination or west coast city, get my choice of vacation, and my choice of sim times, etc.

With the seniority loss after this, I lose my base, I'll be bidding in the BOTTOM 14% of the COMBINED seniority list and in the bottom 23% of ATL's 737 F/O list, and I'm not sure how your work rules will give me that Quality of Life back (weekends and holidays off consistently every month to spend with my family).

According to the retirement schedule at SWA and AAI combined I get my current system seniority back when my son turns 18... that's 13 years from now. I'll be 53. I'll upgrade 2-3 years after that, and will get off reserve 3-4 years after that. In other words, I'll be about 60 when I'm a line-holding CA with 5 years left to climb any higher on the list.

So where, as an F/O in percentage of a list in any given domicile, can I hold weekends and holidays off again to get my current Quality of Life back based on what you were saying about Southwest's work rules? Can I really hold that quality of life at 86% of the way down the list, just 6% above the reserve level? Then how senior do you have to be as a CA to hold that same QoL? Do I even have time left in my career for that to happen just upgrading when I'm 55-56?

Thanks for the answers, this kind of stuff is what every senior AAI F/O wants and needs to know.

Welcome to your CAPT upgrade. Your quality of life would go to crap if you upgraded at AT right now....so with your new "capt pay" at SWA take your seniority hit and then get another capt upgrade when you move to the left seat here. I see this as you getting 2 upgrades...I only get one!
 
P.S still looking forward to the interline and have a swa pilot and Fa on my boat. Looking forward to meeting up with rest of the swa/at boats going.

Dude, don't you get it...you got BOUGHT! (roll eyes) Maybe you can charter out your sloop to native (real) SWA pilots that like to sail whilst sporting cowboy boots.

I actually feel what he's saying. he made a pretty good life and doesn't want a change to it. That's not hard to understand. But two things. Theres a really common saying here- said sarcastically "its all about you, isnt it?"- there will be some blatantly unfair situations in a 7800 pilot group. When its time to vote- we have to vote the whole group and proposal. We have to think how this deal affects everyone. And 2-I think patience is in order. I'd imagine that life will continue and then some for you blade. Maybe a hiccup in it for a year or so- if at all. Maybe I'm unplugged, but I don't know anyone jonesing to get into ATL, you could offer me an upgrade tomorrow and im not heading there. But let's see the whole package.

I'll see you in the BVI's man and drinks on me.

Blade, you will have plenty of time to sail AND bang your girlfriend. You can trade your stuff, give it away, split it, and do all kinds of things to open up big gaps of time off in your schedule. Plus, with the pay raise, you will be able to have more time off for the same amount of money. So rig your sails, pack your KY, stock up on midget porn, and tie on your jumping shoes...joy is here to stay!

He will probably be able to afford a second boat and girlfriend in Oakland after the pay increase. This merger is going to cause some upset in our lives, just gotta look for the upsides.

Like I said in that post, I truly wasn't trying to be negative, I just wanted to hear what the realities were of being in that bidding percentage. Being prepared for something makes it easier to adjust, or at least that's how I've found it to be. Thanks to those who answered.

Looking forward to seeing what the MC and NC come back with once the MEC sends it out to us. Until then, ya'll fly safe, and I look forward to meeting more of you out there.

should not have to lose your Captain seat or your seniority.

Hold firm and vote this "bad deal" down.

These guys bought their jobs, PFT, and now they want GK to buy them
YOUR Captains seat and Seniority.

On Saturday, July 16, 2011 your Negotiating Committee reached an Agreement-in-Principle with Southwest Airlines and ATN-ALPA on a comprehensive deal to integrate our pilot groups. This is the culmination of ten months of hard work, collaboration and planning. I am very pleased that SWAPA was able to deliver and meet the task of reaching this monumental agreement.
Many of our pilots are obviously anxious to hear the details of the deal. As you know, we’ve continually communicated our goals throughout this process and I’m proud to say that your Negotiating Committee believes we met the goals set forth by your board of directors. The BOD will thoroughly review this agreement next week prior to publishing the full details to the Membership.
The delay in getting details to you is understandably frustrating, but this is the normal process when we negotiate. Make no mistake, negotiations have concluded and we are moving into the academic phase of writing final language. There is a lot of work to be done prior to BOD vetting and membership vote. The BOD has been briefed on the Agreement-in-Principle and will receive full language next week.
Once we have education material prepared and roadshows scheduled, the Membership will view the full details and have plenty of opportunity to ask direct questions of their reps and NC as we are dedicated to presenting unbiased, factual data for the membership to review. Details without full context would lead to inaccurate conclusions. We have a full plate of roadshows planned across the system as well as multimedia explanations of the effect of the Seniority List.
You can be proud of your Association through this process. Our committee members, governance and staff have given the Negotiating Committee the tools and support necessary to bring these negotiations to a close. There are many hurdles remaining before a fully implemented Integrated Seniority List (ISL) is applied. The SWAPA Board of Directors, ATN-ALPA Master Executive Council and both memberships have to ratify this deal. Though the negotiations are finalized, our marathon continues as we move into the education phase of this process.

A guy I know in ATL says apparently ALPA thinks negotiations are on-going. He said the MC wasn't necessarily supposed to negotiate a comprehensive deal, and now the MEC has involved ALPA national to come in and fix what they don't like.

It sure seems, though, that SWAPA has a different opinion entirely. I can't imagine the response when ALPA tells SWAPA they need to re-negotiate some thing that were unintentionally agreed to. Could be interesting!

Sounds like the Transition Agreement. AT agreed to the plan and then decided not to agree. What is going on in that union? The left hand does not know what the right hand is doing!! I'm not surprised. Embarrassing.

If what you are saying is true, perhaps SWAPA's statement is a warning shot over the bow!?!?
