Do those of you who advocate moving to poorer neighborhoods actually have children of your own? I'm guessing not because there is no way that I would intentionally put my child in an inferior school district. I intend to spend whatever money I have to in order to insure my child gets the best education possible. And yes, that means moving to the most affluent area I can afford or if need be, paying for private school. You only get one chance at providing a quality education for your children.

That presumes you have something to give so taking care of yourself completely is honorable- but once you've surpassed that standard- finding time to give is something I will always encourage- and you'll find that you will be given back to in more ways and amounts than you'll ever feel you deserve. On that topic... My wife has a masters in Ed and has taught in everything from inner city type schools (when we lived in ATL, she taught at Riverside school in Maybleton) and she's taught at schools in far more affluent areas as well. We also have our two kids now in a public school which ranks as one of the best schools in the state (public or private).. it's not so much about whether the school is public or not, but more to do with the quality of the neighborhood which feeds into it, the parental involvement in their kids education, and other local factors. This is why many realtors will tell you that whether you have school age kids or not, paying attention to the schools attributed to the home you're buying is a huge factor in keeping your home's value strong.

You got me- I have no kids so any opinion on that is suspect- I don't have a desire to shelter them- but I can't say I'd want them in an inner city school full time- I'm saving now for private school bc I want a more whole person spiritual approach and want that option open for when I get married- by they'll be another opinion to join that one-

As is your usual brilliance stuns me again Joey- I fail to the relevance- I preach on about volunteering in inner city and rural poor areas bc the education and actions of all our citizens affects us and I have a personal investment in each American living a wise, happy and productive life- it's not just about me and mine- but it does affect me and mine

Yes- I think the title is corny as are most tribal thoughts translated to English- but I do think it takes a village to raise a child-

Don't believe me- talk to 10 good sets of parents at least 1 will have a kid that got into all kinds of craziness-and that craziness was a big drain on the economy- multiply it by thousands and undereducating a population is a very expensive endeavor -(try to remember that jails aren't remotely free- they're expensive and you also lose out on the productivity of the extra guards and the prisoner themself- neverminding the havoc and expense the crime caused(!)
parents are a big part- but only 1 part of a persons environment

And I don't live in the naive world where the actions of others has no effect on me-
