Ummm,,, yeah,,,

So let me get this straight. The weather is crap at his destination. So, as his plane runs out of fuel, he decides landing in the water in an area unknown and hoping the plane doesn't come apart on him then drown his sorry carcass is SOMEHOW better than following the approach all the way to its termination on centerline then continuing with the same course and sink rate until the plane touches down.

At least with plan B, you're in a relatively-flat controlled area of the airport with CFR right there to help you after the plane comes to a stop if you bend it, and if you have an ILS, there's a d**n good chance you'll land without a scratch.

But no, let's go swimming with the sharks, because my body is just THAT SEXY that it NEEDS to be in the water...

Yeah, Good call. Not. :EPIC FAIL:

Where would you have put it, Mr. arm chair quarterback? Weather going below forecast at your destination and alternate in the South Pacific doesn't leave you many options. Ditched in the Pacific with no serious injuries, hmmm, "Epic fail"? Not. Good call? Absolutely.

I already said what I'd do.

I'll take a controlled touch down on the airport surface, equivalent to a Cat III landing, even if the autopilot isn't rated for it, than attempting an ocean landing with 7 foot swells.

We actually train for those in the sim from time to time. "1200 RVR below minimums but you're out of fuel and options" approaches.

YMMV.

And yes, if the first post really was flame, then he got me. ;)

Doh! You did indeed say what you would do. I claim posting under the influence.:0

Sounds cool. I'll have to ask the Check if he'd let me try that at my next recurrent.

It's flightinfo... don't we all post under the influence? :D

Actually, you are playing arm-chair quarterback. YSNF doesn't have an ILS. There's only an NDB and a VOR/DME. I wouldn't call it a failure on his part at all. I'd put him in the same category as Sully. Yes, I was partially flaming in my original post. However, this pizza guy's situation was tougher than Sully's. I'll say it for you. You stand corrected.
