I thought folks might find this research report on Continental Express interesting. There is certainly a very important lesson to be learned here. With one of the higher cost structures in the industry resulting from an aging fleet, costly new pilot contract, major airline style corporate overhead, among other things, the company lost one third of all it’s flying (69 aircraft) when Continental exercised it’s right to terminate the flying. In addition, Continental has the right to terminate the remaining flying over the next two years. Faced with this dilemma the company is now attempting to find homes for these aircraft. If the company is unable to win additional business with major carriers because it can not compete effectively due to its high cost structure the situation could become very difficult. If COEX attempts to go down the “independent” path like the one chosen by Atlantic Coast Airlines (which ended up liquidated less than two years after the operation began) the situation could negatively impact Mesa - the COEX aircraft may well end up back on the market at lower lease rates (like the Atlantic Coast aircraft) making it more difficult for us to compete with our more expensive aircraft. All in all it appears this is not a very good situation – and only emphasizes how critical it is for us to maintain our ability to compete with low costs and efficient service. That's from Jonathan Orenstein. He's posturing for the coming negotiations. I can tell you my friends at Mesa are Pissed-Off. They seem to be gaining the resolve to fight.

We'll see how they do after the negotiations get under way. The MEC over there posted a pretty nasty no confidence news release about JO and cronies.

Let the games begin.

The Mesa payscale is the bottom of the industry. It is the target ASA and every other regional management wants to shoot for.

The Mesa MEC say they had to accept the lousy pay they have to buy scope and get Freedom back. Now they say they want to keep the pay?

If the Mesa pilot group truly isn't looking to improve their pay scale, then it proves that they are content bottom feeding and taking our jobs away.

Somebody from Mesa please say it 'aint so! Tell me this was just posted as flamebait.

Good luck guys- we all know it's going to be a rough ride for you, as it is for EVERYONE ELSE. Look at it this way- we're all in the same boat here. Comair, ASA, Pinnacle, and RHP......we are all looking down the same barrel. Hang in there and know you guys are not hurting alone!
 
The quality of life (rigs, rules etc) will be a big part of the new contract. But don't be fooled....WE WILL get a raise. It is about QOL AANNNNDDDD PAYRATES!!!!!!!!!!! The fun is just beginning on the property and the next few years will be interesting.

Hope you'll enjoyed the party in Vegas......we need all the support we can get.

Issuance of pilot certificates has dropped 50% since 2001

Key Bank has dropped out of the pilot-training financing business thus, the pilot puppy farms have lost a SIGNIFICANT amount of customers.

Few if any regionals are able to fill classes.

JO has even tossed around the idea of $500 for pilot referrals.

The scales are tipping toward all pilot groups for once. I, for one, am cautiously optimistic.

Maybe Mesa needs to go for a pay raise and QOL! Then their pilot group may earn some respect.

Hey airboss, with your TT I doubt you were in the game when this contract came out, almost 60% of the pilots here weren't at mesa, there was a non union whipsaw startup on the property, we had different seniority lists, guys on furlough, etc, so I think you might want to do your homework. We know we have a ********************ty contract, we live it daily. You need to grow a pair and step up to the plate before you can start whipping out insults. You bash mesa for a ********************ty contract and now that we're gearing up for some change, voting no confidence, and getting ready for blood you start bashing some more. Let's face it, you want us to fail again.

We're here, we're ready to fight. You're either with us, or you're against us. In the case of the latter, WTF are you thinking?

I'm not at Mesa (just add the "ba" to the end), but what I have to say goes for all companies: The only thing I would add, please, is that it's 11 off for reserve guys, too. The culture of f#cking over the reserve guys needs to end now. There is alsolutely no reason to "extra-screw" those guys. They have it bad enough already.

I am not a Mesa either! But you must be a new guy at your company! This is a seniority based profession!! Sorry dude, Reserve people get hosed!!! Don't worry, you won't be there forever!! Pay your Reserve days dues, get a line and you'll be alright!!

How is that wrong? Its seniority based!!! Bottom line! Doesn't matter how many years you have been there! There is still people senior to you. They choose to be on reserve by there crew base....... Sorry, it sucks.... But thats how it works..

And who are ALG guys? Is that airline still operating?

Did you like it when you were on reserve? If the answer is no, then why wouldn't you work to change it? What could you possibly have against a reserve having an extra day off? Making the reserve rules better could help you out a bunch if the industry took another turn for the worse.

And no, I am not on reserve. I just try to leave things better than I found them.
 
As long as there are second class citizens at a company there will always be a natural divide for Management to exploit. In this case the second class citizens are not only reserve pilots, but First Officers. In my opinion ALL First Officer pay should be 60% of Captain's pay, and there should never be single pay scales. Right now Comair is trying to impose both on First Officers. Even if Captains wanted a deal, it would be difficult because the company is throwing half the pilot group under the bus. The only defense to this tactic is to stand together, but that is sometimes difficult because everyone has their own agenda, which management knows and takes advantage of (or is trying to at least).

Actually, few if any regionals are having problems filling classes. One reason why mgmt will continue to prevail.

That is fine, jsut don't complain if junior guys vote away some perk of you senior guys to get an extra day off.

Can't believe what a crappy QOL you have, 8 days off on reserve, sleeping in the airplane on standups etc. Time to make a stand, the entire reigonal industry is watching.....

In the old days a reserve guy was likely to sit around on his @ss a lot, so the idea was that even with less official days off, he still had more effective days off than the minimum. That has changed as airlines are getting more agressive with crew utilization, so yeah the reserve guys should get the same as lineholders.
