MEXICO CITY, July 6 (Xinhua) -- A cargo plane crashed Sunday in northern Mexico, killing the pilot and seriously injuring the co-pilot, authorities said.
[FONT=&#23435] [/FONT]The crash happened at 0:14 local time (0614 GMT) on the highway at Jose Lopez Portillo, some 12 km from Plan de Guadalupe airport in the city of Saltillo in Coahuila state.
[FONT=&#23435] [/FONT]The DC-9-15 plane of USA Jet Airlines was loaded up auto parts and was flying from Hamilton, Canada.
[FONT=&#23435] [/FONT]The authorities have found the plane's black box. According to first reports, the plane landed in an unpredictable way due to an engine failure, the federal Public Ministry and the Civil Aeronautic Authority said.
[FONT=&#23435] [/FONT]The plane split into at least four pieces in the crash, scattering debris across an area of about 600 meters in diameter.
[FONT=&#23435] [/FONT]The accident blocked the highway to the city of Monterrey.

Found this article with an aerial shot of where the plane crashed in relation to the runway. Looks to be a road angled parallel to the runway.

FYI: This graphic claims they lost an engine on approach, I have seen nothing "official" on this just press speculation. FYI

There is some talk on a Mexico aviation forum, amongst Mexican pilots, fsmex.com, that the "mistook the road for the runway" is far-fetched.

let us wait and see what happened since flying in mexican airspace is quite different then flying in US airspace. thank god for EFIS/GPS, would not be caught in mexican airspace without it. Language barriers and don't care is part of the norm south of the border.
