United Airlines runs off runway after fire?

Sounds like the reporter may have misrepresented themselves. We know not to talk to the press but this reporter was on the flight. Wonder if he was simply asking what happened or if he had an angle to get the pilot to spill his guts to an "unknown" reporter?
 
Listened to the tape... sounds like a good job by the crew.

Cliff notes version:

United 447 departs 19, shortly after departure reports requests vectors back and longest runway for a "smoke issue", declares emergency, requests that they "roll the equipment". 106 souls on board 32,400 lbs fuel.

The long runway, 10, was down for maintenance but they hustle to try and clear the vehicles and cones and they provide vectors for the ILS 10.

Shortly after cleared for the approach flight 447 reports a complete loss of flight instruments, requests PAR vectors. They are northwest of the airport and the controller provides turns and bearings to the airport. Flight 447 is able to pick up the water and descents to 600'. Controller advises them 19 is available and the crew agrees 19. At this point it seems runway 10 was still not available, and in any case 19 was more direct.

Obviously they land 19 and run off the end. Like I said good job.

Oh, yeah, and SWA was heard in the background requesting RNAV approaches and basically getting in the way of things :)

Nah, SWA can't be blamed for this one, they already paid the press off with a huge pizza party, with leftover pizza from the previous "ATC bribe" party. You SWA pilots finally see that your ridiculously hard landings to make sure you make the reverse or first turn off has finally shown itself in an Aloha style accident. But what are you guys saying? It's Boeing's fault....... Riiight.

Well done - if you are familiar with that runway and the characteristics of an overweight Airbus with no electrics, you know that could have been really ugly. You just can't beat a well trained, mainline crew...

first of all...great job gentleman....

A) mainline??? what does this have to do with it??

B) NO electrics?? nothing works....had something powered somewhere for sure unless they landed it in mechanical backup...even then....

either way...great job...
